    Brings back memories! Aloha Airlines in Hawaii flew 3 Vickers Viscounts with 4 Darts apiece. Back then you walked across the ramp to get on your plane. Hawaiian Airlines flew the Convair 340 and 440 with two Darts. The Viscounts were, with their 4 Darts turning, absolutely piercing. I was used to hearing DC-8s and 707s leaving the ramp but they were nothing compared to the Viscount.

    I was never around an F27, but was around hundreds of YS-11s starts, and even inside, that spoiling sound is unique. Much the uniqueness of a Spey engine start on a BAC-111. Very nice.

    Man my childhood memories came flooding back. Flew on the F27 many times as a kid in Kenya.You could always tell when they were taxing to the ramp.The screaming darts.They later replaced them with its newer sibling the Fokker 50.

    Such an iconic scream! I was lucky enough to fly in Viscounts (Cambrian and Aer Lingus), an HS748 (Dan-Air) and holiday charters on HP Heralds and F27’s back in the day.

      I hear it 24hrs a day, every day. It wasn't all her fault though, the damage started in CENTCOM '04-'07. The dart just fine tuned the pitch.

    Air New Zealand had them from about the 1960,s til 1990. when the Airline NAC purchased them at the time and after the merger of NAC/Air New Zealand. I can remember putting my hands over my ears when they started up.

    I have been watching Rolls Royce Darts for many years, since back when Ozark flew Fairchild FH-227Bs into my home town of Rock Falls, Il., and watching many other Fokker and Fairchild F-27s and 227s in Moline and Chicago and I have never seen black puffs of smoke come out of the exhaust like this. I wonder if its more the fuel than the engine.

    • @dustinperegrin537
      @dustinperegrin537  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary Orlando All was good, I assure you. Perhaps you weren’t sitting under the nacelle? If I remember right, this bird was loaded down with a full team departing for a show. The mechanics had just finished engine work, it passed the test flight but the pilots were spooling her up slow and deliberately to monitor the old steam gauges to make sure all was good. What you see in the video is RPMs much higher than a normal crank and idle, likely producing the smoke

    • @AccessAir
      @AccessAir 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh yeah, I watched such planes like a hawk and would make note of anything odd. I think the extra smoke is cool, actually!! Besides, ALL Rolls Royce airplane engines tend to be on the smokey side in one way or the other. These Darts will throw out bluish oily looking smoke in the colder winter temps.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. We are retiring one of the old 27's this spring, replacing it with a DASH-8. We're in the works with big Army to replace the second one with another DASH-8 soon. Sad to see the old girls go.

    • @AccessAir
      @AccessAir 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah. I have never seen the Golden Knights in person and will be might sad to see a Dash 8 replace the Fokkers.

    The only engine close to the DART sound is the Garrett TPE331 on an MU-2 or Rockwell 690.

    I remember Vickers Viscounts at my local airport that would start up literally 50 feet from where I was standing. I couldn't understand why engines that noisy were allowed.

      In the early 80's I worked as a line rat in San Diego and there was an airline flying Viscounts that would come in regularly, you could here them a ways out on final screaming their way to the runway let alone when they taxied up to the ramp.

      I would, but I left that organization back in 2017 and those planes were retired shortly after. Replaced with Dash-8s. The old Fokkers are either in the scrap yard or on sticks as a display somewhere.
