Judaism
The perspective on life after death in Abrahamic religions, including Judaism, has its roots in sacred texts such as the Bible and the Quran. Direct interpretations of these texts and interpretations by scholars present intriguing and unique views on life after death.
Early and ancient Jewish beliefs focused mainly on the ethical leadership of humans in the present life, with little explicit mention of what happens after death in Jewish scriptures.
However, the Hebrew Bible subtly hints at the existence beyond death, with phrases indicating that good individuals "gather to their ancestors." Additionally, Sheol, often translated as "grave," refers to a shadowy realm where all souls eventually reside, tranquil and free from the tumultuous experiences of life.
With the evolution of Judaism, the concept of Olam Haba, or the World to Come, emerged as a significant belief regarding life after death. Olam Haba refers to a future state where rewards and justice are established.
This concept later evolved in various branches of Judaism, with some interpreting it as a spiritual realm where the righteous immerse themselves in the divine presence, benefiting from the positive outcomes of their good deeds. Others see Olam Haba not as a place but as a time when the Messiah or Redeemer appears, ushering in global salvation and an era of peace and harmony.
Little information about the world after death in early Judaism and the direct teachings of the Prophet Moses is not readily available. Nonetheless, in modern Judaism, the focus is more on life in this world, establishing ethical order, and emphasizing the need to repair and perfect this world through social justice, kindness, and friendship.
Christianity
In the vast canvas of Christian faith, the concept of life after death holds a central and profound place. The Christian perspective on life after death is rooted in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which became the cornerstone of Christian thought.
The triumph of Christ over death was a miraculous event that, in Christian philosophy, acts as the ultimate expression of God's love and power. The resurrection of Christ, or his return from death, holds extraordinary significance as it not only attests to Christ's victory over death but also instills hope in believers for their own ultimate resurrection and eternal life.
