HG-101 Cheap Brushless upgrade. Short Course RC Truck. Better than a Slash?

  • This HG101 1/10 Budget Short Course truck arrived a bit of a disappointment, I've now added a $35 Brushless set up and it's a bit of a monster! And I've not tried a 3s yet! This would certainly give a Slash a run for it's money now! (Not in build quality though!)
    Buy the truck here:
    www.gearbest.c...
    cheap 3900KV brushless Motor combo
    www.banggood.c...
    Lipo
    www.amazon.co....
    This had a fair few problems out the box, and even after I had fixed it, it was still a disappointment. How about a Budget Brushless SCT vs Slash, or Vs Arrma Senton 3s BLX? I'll fix it and then put a 3s in it.

      Tomley you're just determined to make it a puddle of plastic aren't ya!
      kidding aside, even with the Atomik brushed motor I'd mentioned (less torque) I don't think the dogbones are near strong enough for the size+weight of the wheels, it really didn't see anything big jump or hard landing, and that chassis tongue cracking.... dang, who are they kidding?!

    hey buddy!!, I got this same brushless system, you know that already, but with the higher 4800 KV motor. Im surprised yours is still only 43 KPH with the 3900 KV. IS the system getting hot? seems like the pinion is too small. What pinion size is that?

      I think there's some hope for it, if they use less brittle plastics in their injection machines and make those dogbones 3X tougher. that's what's cool about videos like this, if the manufacturer cares they can SEE what happens to the product IRL when a consumer loads in what might make it compete.

      @@modelnutty6503 Or there's another more practical solution. Just spray all plastics around the car with Wd40 leave it to soak for 24 hrs and then wipe the excess. That should give more flex to the plastic parts

      the stock brushed ESC might have run the Atomik 19d 05 motor I'd mentioned pretty well with 2S input. SCT's are usually 24-28 mph top speed and good quick acceleration. the plastics and dogbones are for sure the real problems with this model. brushed motor mentioned would likely want a smaller pinion, giving up some top speed for quicker acceleration. I hope they see to improve their product.

  • @modelnutty6503

    lol overkill... the 550 with stator ring (increases torque but lowers RPM), might have gained a little taking the ring off, but an "Atomik" 19d modified brushed motor may have been pretty darn happy in there for 13-14 bucks. they'll spin about 30k rpm, roughly 4200kv equivalent. less torque than a strong brushless, still a lot of bang for the buck. not impressed by the truck itself with its soft dogbones and brittle rims, it's a cheepo. we've all seen some cheepo's that have really been pretty good and tough too, this one just isn't. good review and modification effort on your part that showed the truth about it. not like it had any long high hard launching to spin the wheels up and hit the ground for stopping force to shear that dogbone, they're just that soft or weak unfortunately. in the 1st video we saw how sloppily it was slapped together, with pinion and spur only half face and badly meshed "RTR"?!
    IF the manufacturer cares and watched these videos, you showed them a lot, really.

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't update, but after pulling it apart and rebuilding, it turned out to be missing a bearing for the spur mount! So the spur was just flapping around in the wind! A quick fix and the mesh was much better! Still got no better top speed, just a little quicker off the mark...and then the ESC died lol!

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's the "IF's" lol, if they used better plastics, if they made stronger dogbones, if they dropped the pan some for lower CG, using shorter shocks, or just softer springs with tubing stops inside the shock bodies to get it sitting lower (as the tubing drags a little inside the shock bodies to give some friction damping). "IF" they played some good games I do think this product can be greatly improved without much if any real expense added to the manufacturing process. that 550 motor with its stator ring.... BOO! they can swap it for a cheap 20t 540 can motor and 4-5 tooth smaller pinion (note), might push it 30-35 kph and be acceptable as RTR. (note) = if its 32 pitch (tougher!) then 3 tooth smaller pinion, if 48 pitch then 4-6 tooth smaller pinion. your videos DO show the manufacturer needs to step up their product quality+performance!
      (I'm trying to help them with typing details about "how to")

    just measure the length of the dogbone...look under HSP...they're just rebranded or they make different length . when you epoxy it back. put a layer of fiberglass or Ducttape..so it curse to the plastic..just use hurrican brackets for extra skid plate ect. Just paint it black,....
    The arrma has PLASTIC bevel and ring gears to the differentials....those things arnt going
    to last.lol
    It's plenty fast for bashing. Did you even programmed the ESC?? They usually come set on LOW from the factory.lol You can always gear it up if you want more speed.
    That's what i have to do on all my 1/8 brushless coversion. the stock nitro are only 15T pinon...even the TT was 15T stock...You have to install 18T to get up into the 50 mph range.
    it helps if you install a bigger motor. Mine are bigger than the RTR.lol
    I personally like the Kings motor 1/7 ( up graded version of the HPI apache) $350 RTR.
    it's beefier than the arrma kraton...The KM has a 4mm thick ( it's the same size wheelbase)
    chassis....It's bigger than a slash.
    You can even get the roller version for $275..install your own motor/esc combo.
    It's a beast on 4082 or 4092 ( it'll mount on 550 size mount)
