Not too sure if it will be helpful, but here is a bit I learned regarding blackbox: I few years back I took a couple of introductory computer science course, in it the lecturer described the idea of a black box as it applied to functions defined in some programming task. Very often, one may use some function from a publicly available library made up by someone else, or a group of people. Before using it, you don't need to know everything about it, like its implementation, motivation behind it et cetera. You just need to know it's specifications about inputs and outputs. I suppose another analogy may be that you don't need to learn all about a car in order to use it as a tool for transportation.
I like your style and your Interviews. Your honesty is a good contribution to the women in mathematics topic. In maths so many lives and careers are stolen not only by rapists, murderers and thieves, but also malevolent witches. As maths is rather involved, it is not fair when women mathematicians end up with such a designation and responsibility. Also good men loose their life and career to ambitious women, who don't mind about human sacrifice.
