came to write this. lean forward, improve hands. 3d model sucks, rigging is unnatural, grading is "welcome to Mexico" cliche. its not better now just a different level of weird. end result misses grading and editing and implementation and blur and distance fog and airstreams etc
I don't think that's color grading it's more like the filter/ lens he has from the cowl, along with distortion! I noticed in the movie it always transitions to that orange tint whenever he goes full speed. Kind of liked that effect
The best example of this type of thing I've ever seen is, surprisingly, from the flash show. There are a couple bits in the early seasons where he's running on a treadmill in real time and it looks pretty good
The reason it looks "goofy" is because his running at that speed was meant to mirror the look of speed skaters on ice. The idea is that at his speed, friction doesn't have time to set in, so he's effectively gliding across the terrain. You see this in the fight with Superman, where he slides fluidly after he falls. You also see that at lower speeds, he runs "normally".
While I agree that The Flash running form in this scene could look more convincing, I've seen people use that Mixamo animation before and it just never worked for the character, it simply has no superheroic vibe to it, and when sped up like it is in your version, it kinda gives off goofy Sheldon Cooper as The Flash vibe, like yeah, it's normal human run animation, but it's too plain-looking. Maybe more motion blur for the legs and arms would make it closer to CW The Flash early seasons running look, also whole body leaning more forward as it usually does in the comics (recommend looking up Crimsoned Renz, he accurately recreated CW's running style for his 3D animations). But I also get your time constraints with this one, all the compositing work looks flawless
Great video, of course. But for someone complaining about the running animation, it surprised me that you didn't spend more time on your running animation.
If the run really was comic accurate, then the comic book artists do not know how to draw running poses. Or they are trying to make Barry look cool without caring how goofy it would have looked animated.
It looks goofy because whenever you make a human run at the speed of light, if the running motion isn't in balance somehow with the rate of speed of the sprint, it ends up looking like comical, sped-up, cartoonish mess... like classic Benny Hill episodes
Looks really good, but as a runner myself, I feel like he should be leaned a little bit more forward, allowing him to go a little higher with his knees.
I’d say it’s a pretty great sign that the only issues people have with your version are literally the only parts you aren’t responsible for! Haha The goofy run animation and odd bobble head look… the only things that you didn’t create yourself, and I’m sure if you revisited this and found a better run loop animation it would fix the issue. Your work is basically perfect though… it looks as good as the original in quality so I’d be proud.

I prefer the original movie version. He seems to be reaching through the air pushing the speed force forward. Yours just looks like a weird speed-up cartoon.
The original is horrible. It looks nothing like running is supposed to look like. It (they?) might as well be twerking through the "speedforce". That honestly fits better to the cast and character choices.
For only working on this for a week, I think it's really good! Of course it isn't perfect by any means, but definitely a better representation of how the flash actually runs versus what the movie shows
Honestly, looks really good. The running animation does very janky but since you were short on time due to circumstances, i'm very impressed by it. Good job👍
Not sure what a lot of these comments are talking about! This looks SO much better!! Especially for just one person spending just one week on it! Not only are the motions just so much better, it gives a much higher sense of speed to how fast he’s going. The original makes it look like he’s running slow even though he’s running super fast. Great job and can’t wait for the next video!
It's really encouraging to see how these relatively small tweaks can transform the experience. But the term "fix" might be a bit inappropriate. I agree, the original running style looks super goofy, but it was a creative choice, not a failure in execution. I understand "fix" probably feeds the online algorithm well, but even just saying "remade" would be more respectful of the original creators choices. Just something to consider. All the same, good on you for putting your creative choices out there for audiences and studios alike to be inspired by.
Main thing that still needs tweaking is the posture & the physicality, but I think you still deserve praise for getting his feet to hit the ground at convincing time intervals. In the film, he sort of just looks like he's being pushed forward independent of his movements, while yours actually looks like he's propelling himself with his feet.
Great job man. Lots of comments saying it looks off, but honestly I'd take your version of it over the movie's anytime, coz even though I don't really know what it would look like for someone running at that insane speed, yours is still closer to what I expect to see more than that goofy running the movies do. That running is so incredibly worse than this in my opinion, leaning forward or not. It's a real-life adaptation so the run cycle you used is closer to a real person running at speed than what the comic characters look like, which is better imo. Not perfect, but so so much better than the movie's. I think an animation of a sprint runner would look a little better? Idk, but great work.
It still looks goofy, but not for the reasons you think: 1. the body proportions are really whack for Flash - his torso is much longer than it needs to be and his legs look short, like a scandinavians legs. 2. The running is missing the hip and shoulder sway, as well as the blur from the movements: we're seeing a hyper sped up runner, so even from our point of view there should be motion blur. 3. Make him lean more forward to exaggerate the look of speed and forward momentum.
I'm so sorry for the disrespect the moment is started running I bursted out laughing 🤣🤣 And the moment you criticize at 0:08 it's intended for laughs, like..-*wooosh* the joke flew past so many people I guess.
OK, this is just my opinion, but the flash isn't running fast if he was he would be destroying things around him(anybody remember neo flying to save trinity), the flash is actually moving through dimensional time space, that's what the speed force is, that's why looks like a speed skater and not a runner, he's running against time itself.
that makes sense why they make it like jumping.. but for the general audience who doesn't know about this stuff, they will think of it as running fast.
If this is your explanation than you clearly didn't watch CW The Flash, he doesn't run anything like in the movie and yes he does destroy things around him in the show when he's breaking the sound barrier. The running animation in this movie is such trash like the whole movie itself. My man be gliding at the speed of mach 1-2 like wtf.
nah, if u are running at 50000km/h the film version is better. Look at Olympic racers, they are most of the time in air, every step move them like 2.5 meters. Imagine FLASH, bro is taking 1km per step.
Bro, the flash is running not jumping half a kilometer with each step, the movie run doesn't really make sense with how the body would respond in this situation
No, He is 100% correct. Speed is not just based on how fast you can move your legs but how far you can propel yourself when running... If somebody was moving as fast as the flash every step would probably just propel him possibly miles each step instead of his legs just moving 600,000 steps per second.. Even in the flash TV show when they showed his point of view his legs and arms were not moving super fast compared to how fast he was moving... His arms and feet sometimes looks like he was doing slow jog
You didn't watch CW the flash did you? Over there you can see a much better presentation of how he should be running and it's look much more natural and realistic than in this trash movie.
This video is a waste of time. The running animation is what you wanted to replace but you spent 99% of the video working on creating the model and compositing it into the scene. And just lazily grabbing a terrible premade animation and using that without even modifying it. Come on man.
The issue was never that he runs weird, its that the run is too slow and it doesn't follow the conventions of our gravity so it looks weird. Literally just speed up the footage and he looks fine
His wonky flaying his arms and legs gives me a migraine every time I watch this flash run. How could they do a tv show with little budget better than this crap is beyond me.
As an artist and designer myself, I really appreciate your explanation about AI use. You used it exactly for what it should be used for; not artwork creation but assistance in repetitive, time intensive work. Excellent!
Cheap shot at classic hard work ain't gonna cut it, since you're that good please, create your own movie let's see how great your creativity really is.😊
overall a great job for a week worth of work from a single person, I think the rendering's fine especially with youtube's compression. The criticism I'd give it is that you didn't account for lens distortion (focal length) for a low angle shot which leads to your Flash having a big ass head and tiny legs (to exaggerate) and his head bops too much so I think it'll look better by either stabilizing it or applying more motion blur. One last little thing, if you could find a more Olympic form of running I think it would look even better. Anyways good luck for your finals!! (btw the mugshot joke was clean af)
Something I’ve noticed with the CW vs DC Movie flash, is that the CW flash actually runs fast. While DC Movie flash gets almost propelled by his ability so his legs don’t actually move as much? I could be wrong but that’s the best explanation I have
Considering how all the odds were against this movie Andy Muschietti was still able to do a decent job on his own At least he made this movie fun and exciting I do hope he gets to direct BRAVE AND THE BOLD because I loved his approach on Batman
Man is only hearting the comments praising and glazing him but doesn't actually respond to criticisms about his running animation STILL being bad. Get some spine dude, you didn't fix jack, you somehow made it worse than it originally was
There’s a reason he runs like that. In Justice League, when Superman awakens and they have to fight him, they show the Flash slipping all over the place, as if he’s walking on ice. That’s why he runs as if he’s ice skating.
I wouldn’t say you fixed it. You didn’t really improve it either. The perspective is off and the animation is not great, also you didn’t do any color correction and you didn’t exactly nail it in the raw renders
Perspective was great, the animation was million times better than the original travesty, colors were much better than the pink/orange (porange?) of the original, and he nailed the raw renders which were better than the final renders of this movie, which were created by hundreds of very high salary artists with millions of dollars of equipment and hundreds of millions in budget.
The extended motions Miller does is intended to evoke the Flash as depicted in the comics as well as ice skaters. The wide motions are generally more interesting to look at and meant to show us that the Flash isn't fast necessarily because his legs go fast. But because there's something otherworldly assisting him.
tbh, you lost me at the part where you tried to make flash, a super human being, run like a normal human. Him running like that is to propel his self farther and faster rather than taking a million normal running steps.
AI? No thanks. It's still bad. The computational energy you required to do it is bad for the environment. Yes, you need to use a lot of that when rendering, sure, but this still required more than you needed to use. Also, the running doesn't look natural. You should look more into biomechanics before doing something like that, not to be rude.
This looks really good. The only thing I would change is, I think flash should lean into the run a bit more. A lot of times when people are running, they’ll kind of lean forward to reduce wind resistance
I honestly love how you don’t have the pro version of things, it really makes these videos feel even more down to earth and realistic! I’ve been editing for years, but I can afford to pay $90+ a month on subscriptions either lol
The attempt was admirable, but the running animation you choose looks so robotic and by default make it look still so goofy, but at least was the correct idea, with a much cooler animation for the running maybe this would had been a success
If I had a nickel for every time I chose the wrong Mixamo animation for a DC character in a video I'd have two nickels, which isn't alot but it's weird that it happened twice

nah, if u are running at 50000km/h the film version is better.
It’s still so goofy but it does genuinely look so much better than the original
This video is a waste of time. The running animation is what you wanted to replace but you spent 99% of the video working on creating the model and compositing it into the scene. And just lazily grabbing a terrible premade animation and using that without even modifying it. Come on man.
Booooooooo
Yeah I agree, the compositing is really good, it's kinda sad that the running animation is shit, it would take a good 3D animator to fix that.
Thank you for all your effort! ❤
If you ask me, slow makes sense since for him it's the normal speed. That is one step he's like 20 miles or something. It's the arms, that's all
As an artist and designer myself, I really appreciate your explanation about AI use.
Im not gonna lie but your flash version is bad no hate!! The original is better
I think it's better bcoz original was done in studio by VFX artists with good amount of time, budget and material.
Uh, no
I would recommended using the echo effect or using tons of motion blur since it conveys a lot of speed
In my opinion, the flash slow mo while really fast at running shows how speed he really is
Something I’ve noticed with the CW vs DC Movie flash, is that the CW flash actually runs fast. While DC Movie flash gets almost propelled by his ability so his legs don’t actually move as much? I could be wrong but that’s the best explanation I have
Considering how all the odds were against this movie
Andy Muschietti was still able to do a decent job on his own
At least he made this movie fun and exciting
I do hope he gets to direct BRAVE AND THE BOLD because I loved his approach on Batman
You said that try to make him run like a normal human?
But the flash is not a normal human...
Man is only hearting the comments praising and glazing him but doesn't actually respond to criticisms about his running animation STILL being bad. Get some spine dude, you didn't fix jack, you somehow made it worse than it originally was
THE FUNNY PART IS THAT YOUR VERSION IS HONESTLY EQUALLY AS GOOD
The reason he runs the way he does is that he is not hindered by friction, that is part of his powers.
Do something better then
Perspective was great, the animation was million times better than the original travesty, colors were much better than the pink/orange (porange?) of the original, and he nailed the raw renders which were better than the final renders of this movie, which were created by hundreds of very high salary artists with millions of dollars of equipment and hundreds of millions in budget.
I'll say this: you're really good at compositing.
The problem with Flash's way of running is that they thought that applying real physics would look cool. It didn't
Kinda looks goofy too, but taking account you had 2% of time that the whole team of vfx of the movie looks amazing and well done
Omg this looks even worse than the original
I really loved Flash. It was fking underrated.
AI?
Your re-imaging looks better!
Great work!
You are a legend for that mugshot😭
This actually looks better than the actual movie 😂
Matching the camera was the most impressive part of all of this 🤣 great work! 👏
Thanks! That was the part I was most worried about going into this project lol
I honestly love how you don’t have the pro version of things, it really makes these videos feel even more down to earth and realistic! I’ve been editing for years, but I can afford to pay $90+ a month on subscriptions either lol
Huge improvement! -But like others are saying, it still looks silly hahaha
The attempt was admirable, but the running animation you choose looks so robotic and by default make it look still so goofy, but at least was the correct idea, with a much cooler animation for the running maybe this would had been a success
That's cool bro, ❤ respect
