Hyper Wing she is directly touching the Old One’s soul. I believe that the Old One’s power is stronger than the binding of the nexus, or its that she already escaped the nexus. The binding is physically on her leg so I see it as something similar to a suped up shock collar, as in she is totally bound within the physical walls of the nexus so she can’t use the arch stones or even die to leave. So when the sword pierces the magical barrier she is able to escape, that’s why she’s so eager to jump, and once she’s out she’s out and can go wherever or die because she’s no longer in the nexus. Could also be that since she’s the most powerful demon in the nexus she absorbs her own soul again and comes back to life, but when you finally kill her it’s that you have become even stronger than her so you absorb it. After all when you do you absorb the Old One, it takes a pretty powerful being to do that.

@redxpen well, it was far from perfect. And could quickly spiral into unplayable for first timers. You can see the effort put into polishing game mechanics in future games. But it seems like story took a hit as FromSoft's ambition to make beautiful and well polished worlds took the front seat. Understandable as there are neither time nor resources enough to do everything. But it does make it kinda hard to piece together a cohesive narrative. I suspect all the fights over what the lore of dark souls is really happen because not enough resources were put into having a story over having a functioning game that they then try to shove a story into.

This is probably the best TH-cam video I’ve ever watched. I rewatch it all the time. The Demons Souls lore and world is like no other in the series to me. It is so interesting, bleak, dark, and I can’t believe Miyazaki achieved all of that in his first game. Sure Dark Souls may have been the more popular game, but this one defies any rules of what a video game should be. Paired with that, the story…the story feels so much better than Dark Souls ❤❤

Thanks for the video. I do think your theory opens up some possibilities I didn't see before.
    A few thoughts:
    1. Some people did theorize that King Allant XII unleashed the 2nd scourge not because he "grew melancholy", but because he accidentally discovered the secret in the Boletarian mausoleum. After finding out that Doran, the mythical hero from eons ago, is not only alive, but also wields a matchless power (boasting the highest HP in the game, etc.), Allant decided to seek the soul arts by breaking the 6th archstone with Soulbrand. This is how he unleashed the 2nd scourge.
    2. some theorize that the Queen of Latria was kept alive as the giant "heart" in Latria tower because the Old Monk missed her secretly even after murdering her. Or at least this "heart" or "magical womb" is the device by which the Old Monk tried to revive her.
    3. You argued that even if the player chooses to turn back after defeating real Allant, the world is still doomed and will only continued to fuel the evils represented by Valley of Defilement. I would say that is not necessarily the case, and the "good ending" is still far better than the "bad ending". The player's agency to choose not to give in to the temptation of ultimate power would at least stop the scourge and save millions of lives. This would also fit your theory that the Old One is merely an amplifier of human's moral tendencies. In other words, either our choice matters, or that it doesn't matter at all. And your overall interpretation and presupposition (including the notion of evil and morality) would be consistent only if the player's choice matters.
    4. Miyazaki majored in Sociology before entering the game industry, and I would say he definitely has his inclinations as expressed in the game. He set up different factions and their metanarratives and then hinting subtle inconsistences and contradictions in every of them. In this regard, I would say Demon's Souls is a game about worldviews at war. Even the intro cinematic and the Monumental have conflicting creation accounts.

It's worth noting how Astraea didn't consume her demon soul and holds it in her hands.

You walk into an arena expecting a boss fight on the same level of disgust as the rest of the Valley of Defilement, only to find what seems to be a couple of romantic partners. Astrea doesn’t care about your mission, she doesn’t care that your world has become a disaster, because she doesn’t care about the Old One. All Astrea ever wanted was to help the people suffering in the Valley, and you wade through a plague to murder her... It really makes you wonder, who’s the real Demon?

Does the Old One represent suicide? Characters see the corrupted world as despair, and having their souls devoured as release. So the ending choice is to resist mass suicide, or succumb to it.
How does this compare to Dark Souls? The First Flame seems to be more about a bygone order or hierarchy. How giving yourself to the flame may maintain the dreary status quo at the cost of your life. Or how letting the flames die will plunge the world into a period of darkness and hardship, but leaves space for a new world to form. Sounds sort of like revolution?
Demon's Souls teaches us that we should endure despite the tragedies of the world, and not succumb to suicide.
Dark Souls teaches us that we should not sacrifice ourselves to those in power, and be willing to endure hardship for a better world.
From the personal, to the political.
(This is me thinking about it out loud. Obviously this isn't accepted canon or anything)

    • @MrJavier1223
      @MrJavier1223 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

I would say that the old one fits suicide less and is more of a metaphor for decay and the negative impulses that dehumanize mankind. Wile the overall theme of Demon's Souls is indeed to persevere in the face of adversity and to gain control over your own demons, so that you may then be able to confront the root of what demonizes us. While the old one does exists and is a physical being it's more a metaphor. You give into the worst that you are and become demonic. You gain power and status bringing others down, by doing evil acts, power without morality is evil. That's why you are given the choice at the end ultimately. To banish and lull the Old One to sleep. Or rouse him to full strength and become his ArchDemon. That is my take. You can lull that which destroys us and to sleep since you are unable to destroy it, you can only learn to control your impulses or continue to be influenced by lack of morality and clarity. Strong but you waste away what you touch. And let's not forget about the soul. A human needs a soul to be elevated above the common animal. The power comes from within. From the connection to the divine in ourselves and that which helps us pierce the fog that blankets man and keeps him as a hollow husk unable to understand. But the power of the soul is an enticing thing. People become corrupt and desire more power than what their own soul gives. They become decadent and lazy due to the fact that they can simply use the soul arts to solve most if not all of their problems. That is what I see on a basic level of Demon's Souls.

@@MrJavier1223 The Old One, Mergo and Kos' Orphan all embody the coldest Truth of all: "Better (for some) to have never been born." Godlike reality-warping beings of unfathomable power, yet all *scream* for release, like newborns, from the agony of eternal 'life'. All are cursed with unquenchable thirst. The Orphan mourns not only his mother, but the stolen life it never had. Demon's Souls doesn't come close to being my favorite, but there's something special about that game that's not evident in any of the titles that came after it. The peculiar bleak atmosphere, the charming jank and the way it harmonizes its gameplay with its narrative themes and the overall story, something all the subsequent games more or less expanded on in various different ways and with varrying degrees of success, but there's just something about it I can't quite pin down and say what it is. But it makes it stand out in ways no other game in the From Soft catalog does. A true gem.

From what I knew so far, letting the old one destroy the world was a clear "bad" ending. But, as you pointed out with the valley of defilement, and the general suffering of the world, the "goodness" of each ending is more nuanced. Thanks for the quality video, it's clear that put a lot of effort into it ^^

What if there is no virtually no difference between a demon and a human. The only difference is that a demon is an amalgam of souls together and the body comes to reflect the state of that amalgamation. Soulsborne games often play around with that concept that monsters in game are the twisted forms of mortals. The old one absorbs souls and creates demons possibly by overloading that body with souls it has absorbed.

  • @CNNBlackmailSupport

I've noticed some of the dialogue is straight out of the wiki(which is probably directly from the game since From loves that shit.) I think you really bring this to life when you stay away from that stuff, since it is written in such an antiseptic way as specific descriptions without context. Tying it all together is what you have a talent for.
It would be neat to see some more focus on the intertwining weapons and styles. It would pique the interest in the other games' lore and give your audience things to consider beyond the specific story explanation.
Just my 2 cents. Great video, man. I dig it immensely.

    QUESTION #1:
if maiden cannot die, how is it possible in the end to choose to kill her?
    QUESTION #2:
Why both endings will end in despair, the maiden would lul the old one to sleep and therefore we will have peace.
    QUESTION #3:
So if we choose to kill the maiden and take the souls, do we also become a blob like king allant?
As you see my questions are on the vagueness of the endings. If you can make a video just talking about the endings and their meanings , it'd be great. (just throwing an idea)

The Valley of Defilement is genius and misunderstood. The point is that there's an ancient holy church built under the valley that had been forgotten. It's kindness and Holiness radiates out calling all the forgotten, the aborted, the suffering, the lost. It looks like pure suffering and horror, but the heart of it is actually positive. It's subversive. And it's presentation is seemingly pure horror. Which adds a layer to the whole scenario. At first it appears hopeless but actually isn't so as you cleansing it was part of the process of helping the poor. You are doing God's will in the valley. And Astrea was doing evil by becoming demonic and needed to be put out like all other demons in the area that increased suffering.

As you said silver is know to have some healing properties, mercury used to be known as quicksilver and was actually used in some medicines leading to madness and death.
