I love all the changes Yamaha has made to the FZ-09. What I love about Yamaha is they actually listen to their customers and make desired changes and great new bikes. This bike is at the top of my list. Note: Yamaha please give us the silver/ blue wheels color combo. Why do us in the USA always get the boring colors and Europe gets the cool colors?
It's true, fz-10's weight is up there at 463 lbs compared to 425 lbs for the FZ-09. The extra power on the FZ-10 is overkill, would rather have lighter weight than added power. Most people seem to love the fz-09 triple engine, especially now that the suspension is fixed.
I have a 2015, and i looked so long and hard for that specific license plate mount. It was nowhere to be found. I'm hella jealous, two years and the bike looks exactly how i wanted it to look, and has some great new features. Great job Yamaha on listening to your customers.
(A loud applause for its designers):- The beauty of Design -We can see in the 2017 Yamaha FZ MT 09 new model is in its:- 1.Tail light design 2.Seat Position and flat seat design 3.Exhaust Design(Excellent Arcapovic) Beneath the Belly of the Engine like in Duke 200 in India 4.The Meter console design Compact design 5.Handle bar(Almost True Flat Robust Handle bar) 6.Hidden Grab Rail under the pillion Seat 7. A nice Licence Plate position and design 8.Stylish Swing Arm
As an owner of the original 2014 version, I ride mine all the time. I have gotten used to the sensitive throttle response and my riding and throttle control have improved over the years. I am still riding on the stock 2014 suspension and other than changing out the 2014 stock seat I love the bike just the way she came in 2014
The Engine and the flick ability is up there that is no doubt. for me the 1290 superduke r and mt09/fz09 were what put a broad smile on my face when they came out in the first place.
Looks pretty sweet, imo. And, it's nice to hear that a manufacturer is paying attention because adding a fender eliminator and reflashing the throttle have become expenditures that buyers have to factor into a growing list of aftermarket mods that new bikes require. Good on Yamaha.
Wow motorcyclists are spoiled these days with so many fine handling and powerful bikes available at very reasonable prices (considering our inflation-filled bucks). Yamaha has indeed fixed the deficiencies and 3 cylinder engines are so torquey and cool sounding. I still suspect the new (and more expensive) Triumph Street Triple will out-handle the FZ in the twisties.
for 3 K more.. Not see how it's gonna compete in the general market. The triple will be awesome but will be an elite bike to a niche market. Yahaha with this FZ models is simply ruling the world right now...(I have a triumph Explorer by the way and love triumph but give the Ceasar what belongs to the Ceasar)
While the S3 may have better suspension it also costs more, if you really wanted to you could upgrade the suspension on the 09 and still feel confident in that yamaha reliability. All in all they both have plenty of power and you shouldn't be a street Rossi anyway.
Thank God for the fix, I used to really hate this bike because of all the bouncy seat suspension that felt like a beat up couch. Maybe it can finally give the Triumph Street Triple some competition.
It truly was an interesing bike. 1700cc v2 with 90hp and more torque than a Superduke. I would get one if the prices werent so high because the bike went out of production.
Loved my First Ride of this 2017 FZ-09 last week. Many great improvements over previous years, I share some of the other commenters concerns over Yamaha's color choices in NA. Worse in Canada vs. USA imho. Beyond that performance per dollar is hard to beat.
I'm very much in love with my 2016 Raven black FZ09. It was my dream bike since it came out. The 14 and 15 years had some issues but they perfected it with the 16. I prefer my year model MUCH more than the new 17. The bike has taken a direction that I'm not fond of. Such as electronic assists and styling that went too far. I prefer that instant abrupt throttle response, it really coincides with my style of riding. It doesn't get better than a 2016 FZ09.
Terrific review. I liked the original fz09/mt09 a lot. Enjoyed one on a longish test ride. Could have lived with the niggles at the time, but this update makes me want one more. Looks the ideal 'real world' bike (sorry for using that term - but best sums up what I think I want). Great move by mc.com to give the least enthusiastic about the original fz09 the test this time.
I have been weighing up a new bike and evaluating the FZ09 (MT09 here in Australia) and the Kawasaki Z900. Bikes are worlds apart in some areas, traction control etc. However in the area I live in Brisbane Australia there appears to be an abnormal amount of used MT09's hitting the market that are only a few months owned. I would have thought if the bike is as good as the motorcycle world make it out to be, would it not be a keeper? Something does not appear to be kosher. Anyway, just my thoughts. Good review.
thanks for addressing the throttle. i love the looks of this bike, but test rode a used 2015, or 16, and the throttle was so sensitive and jerky, i passed on the purchase of the 17 i wanted to buy. i might recondider again. thanks!
Nice review. Unsure about the Street Triple-esq headlights, and that gauge's panel looks old-school v Triumph's colour screen. The wannabe tidy-tail cut off looks too square and needs some curve. But what would I know, I ride a girl's bike.
I was sold on a completely different bike and then i was like " hey lets go to Yamaha and just see what they have" fz 09 was not even on my radar until i sat on it and omfg there is to much tolove on this bike for this price point
Why is there a new MT09, when there is the 10? It's like buying a small happy meal instead of a regular. Also the plate mounting completely destroys why you own one, wheelies. Good video tho :)
From the angle you are standing on talking about the license plate holder, it looks good. From the other side it looks ugly. Also, why doesn't Yamaha come out with an R version? They could have upgraded forks and brakes, a la Street Triple, and still kept it cheaper I am sure.
I'm English and love triumphs but it can't touch the mt09. In boring s trim it's a good bike but to get near the yam you have to have the r and that's over a grand more and to get a quick shift you hav to pay almost 10 grand. Triumph u make amazing bikes but price yourself out of the middleweight market. Sorry from a proud Brit but I'm going Yamaha mt09
No, TST Industries fixed the tail end. You should see their integrated tail light. I was the very first person to have it since I was originally asked to beta test it.
I moved from the 2007 r6s after putting 14k miles on it because of my ex wife I traded it for a 2008 suzuki m50 (dislike it). Now I'm divorced and I think I'll get this bike.
hmmm i had those same blinkers on my 2007 r6s which was introduced in 2003. Yamaha.... its time to move on they look dated on a modern designed bike. Not to mention they are incandescent.
P Banks Thank you! Motorcycle.com always leaves out details. I was even mad when they rode the r3. They never mentioned it had a off set to make it rev faster than the ninja 300 (this offset is also found in the r6 engine) And ffs it has a gear indicator! That's what sold me on that bike!! What other beginner bikes do you see that on?! edit: I forgot suzuki has their new 2018 gsx250r but why a 250cc....they should have bored it out to a 300cc. Ugh these companies don't care anymore unlike Yamaha, Ktm abd Bmw....
I love all the changes Yamaha has made to the FZ-09. What I love about Yamaha is they actually listen to their customers and make desired changes and great new bikes. why not FZ10?
over kill, high insurance, fat pig
IcemanSam650 obviously you had never ridden one, it's one of the best in class, what a moron
Cute response.
It's true, fz-10's weight is up there at 463 lbs compared to 425 lbs for the FZ-09. The extra power on the FZ-10 is overkill, would rather have lighter weight than added power. Most people seem to love the fz-09 triple engine, especially now that the suspension is fixed.
My next bike. No questions asked.
Jonathan Sporrong same, april 15th dealer will get mine. Super stoked
kawasaki z900 is much better than this
Jonathan Sporrong why this vs the Fz-07 or the fz-01?
Im waiting for the T7 myself.
do yourself a favor and check out the new Street Triple RS.
I'm a bit too big for the FZ-07, and a bit too poor for the FZ-10 haha. So this is kind of the perfect middle ground.
Thank you for providing a reviewer with some energy and excitement who appears happy to be there!
I have a 2015, and i looked so long and hard for that specific license plate mount. It was nowhere to be found. I'm hella jealous, two years and the bike looks exactly how i wanted it to look, and has some great new features. Great job Yamaha on listening to your customers.
I personally feel like you guys did a much better job on this video compared to your other reviews! Nice job.
oh hey
oh shit whadddup. Is dis dat boi?
I was thinking the same when i was watching the review
Agree...production quality has improved alot!
(A loud applause for its designers):-

Evan you rock man! Trustworthy, very humble and simply always on the money IMHO. Thanks guys. My next bike is a FZ let's see what number it will be...
"A" mode means "Always use this mode". :)
i love it when the music comes on real loud at the beginning thats awesome
The Engine and the flick ability is up there that is no doubt. for me the 1290 superduke r and mt09/fz09 were what put a broad smile on my face when they came out in the first place.
Excellent video - from the production quality to the commentary. Probably the most well rounded review of the 09 yet. Great job Evans

are you comparing to the higher trim of the triumph or the base model?
Now, that was a great review! Everything covered! Great motorcycle btw!
Thank God for the fix, I used to really hate this bike because of all the bouncy seat suspension that felt like a beat up couch. Maybe it can finally give the Triumph Street Triple some competition.
So should I be the one to mention that the MT-09 is the evolution to the old MT-01?! What beast that was. And too soon for its time.
It truly was an interesing bike. 1700cc v2 with 90hp and more torque than a Superduke. I would get one if the prices werent so high because the bike went out of production.

The shootout video can't come fast enough!

Nickel Reed have fun locking your brakes up and bouncing off a Guard rail.... don't lie to yourself
How is your 2016 on the freeway aerodynamically?

I wonder if the fuel mapping changes made their way into the 2017 XSR900 as well.
I have a 2015 and this was an great review, I still love my 2015!
I just got a gsx s1000 over the winter (still haven't ridden it yet) and this review is making me question my choice. excellent review!
Just got one. Excited for the snow to take off so I can go for a rip!
I have been weighing up a new bike and evaluating the FZ09 (MT09 here in Australia) and the Kawasaki Z900. well i want the fz07 or fz09 as a starter bike well currently ride a dr650 which one should i get?
thanks for addressing the throttle. i love the looks of this bike, but test rode a used 2015, or 16, and the throttle was so sensitive and jerky, i passed on the purchase of the 17 i wanted to buy. i might recondider again. thanks!
am really looking it to this motorcycle for this riding season. can't want for a demo ride
Went to my dealer today, they told me they were unavailable until late April... what the heck? How am I seeing all these videos then?
Liked the previous headlight design more but otherwise awesome updates and amazing bike.
hi, so how does this compares to the xsr900 other than looks?
Love it...but is that exhaust still whisper-quiet?
As someone else said where is the quick shifter!?
This is a great review! I have to say this bike looks way cooler than the FZ-10 :)
Is it that hard to make the tac in the center?
Thinking this will be the first bike I get for myself. Rode a 1098 and it was awesome, but for the price and features, wowwwwww
That's where I begin to look at supermotos. Could have some fun in the dirt. Dropping it isn't as much of a pain and can take extra abuse.
the only problem with the last gen fz09 was there wasn't enough power. excellent mid size bike
Headlight reminds me of the Z1000
The new plate holder thingy looks pretty good
Daniel S very similar look to the Z
weren't the modes the other way around in this one? A soft and B agressive? i remember reading and hearing something like that
I believe the modes are that way on the XSR900. Which seems really odd.
yeah, i think it was BvG that said they were that way on this one too...might be wrong tho
When will North America gets the neon green color ?
The us version doesn't get a quickshifter?
Why the hell are you riding with the highbeam on ? I see so many people doing it
the outro sound is very simple but awesome. where can i find this? :D
The 1990's turn signals need to go! And why is there no blacked out version for the US?!?!
Where is the shootout promised at the end of this video???
Hey guys, anyone know what song they played at the end of the video.....
whats the difference bet fz-09 and mt-09 ? if none, then y does the naming differ ?
None. it depends on the country the naming.
what category does this bike fall into?
Cam chain tensioner problems fixed ....?
andree hammerschmidt they released like 4 version for the old one and that still hasn't fixed the issue. I doubt this model is any better.
Anyone knows if it will be a new model of the Fz-07?
Fz-07 gets a ABS option this year
mario williams not new in europe...😅
Time to upgrade the MT07 suspension, it's sold so well I think it's the only real issue with the bike.
Did you get permission from Kygo to use Firestone as background music in this video?
So A mode is the sharpest on the 09? Thats the opposite to the 10. But it makes more sense.
Great review. Thank you
Please tell me The last ending song name ??
Does anyone know why it is called "FZ" and not "MT"
Just don't understand why the name change?
MT in every other country
Nice review. Unsure about the Street Triple-esq headlights, and that gauge's panel looks old-school v Triumph's colour screen. The wannabe tidy-tail cut off looks too square and needs some curve. But what would I know, I ride a girl's bike.
If only it were $6k cheaper, id buy it instantaneously!!
It's a nice bike but I had to get the 2016 Suzuki gsx-s1000 naked and love this bike so much, it does everything so good and that engine👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😉
I want another bike so bad, but I tend to push it too hard. Maybe once the new racetrack opens :(
I was sold on a completely different bike and then i was like " hey lets go to Yamaha and just see what they have" fz 09 was not even on my radar until i sat on it and omfg there is to much tolove on this bike for this price point
it's an awesome Bike. even I own one and am very pleased with the performance
are you going to do a review on the FZ07?
Is it available in India?
Is this a good first bike?
when it will comes in nepal
Wow those roads look fantastic!!!
Fantastic bike, fantastic price.
if i trade my r6 for this would i regret it?
im already picturing the pillion sliding down all day on that flat seat.
Yet another FZ let out of the factory with fueling issues. Thanks Yamaha. Did you ever sort out the FZ 1 ?
top speed mt09 2017 original ??
Looks like much more of a bike, than the first series. Pity you cannot disconnect ABS when needed.
Why is there a new MT09, when there is the 10? It's like buying a small happy meal instead of a regular.
Also the plate mounting completely destroys why you own one, wheelies.
Good video tho :)
Price difference is quite a bit. That would be a large gap in price for this style of bike that Yamaha is really cashing in on.
Maxbooze u can order conventional fender mounted plate holder in dealership, they will replace
09 is lighter, cheaper insurance, cheaper in general, still hauls ass...10 is kind of overkill and a but of a fat pig
Because that triple is bad AF
Maxbooze those are 2 different types of bikes. That's why.
well done review. thanks.
Gonna have to test ride when they hit the stores. I've got a FZ07 now, and wanted an 09 before, but HATED the seat. Actually, my nuts hated the seat.
Where is the review for the Kawasaki Z900?
The FZ-09 looks like Bumblebee from Transformers in a bike form!
Great video
I have video of passing you guys and the sprinter van. Hah 😎
snowcat ayyyyy it's sloth boii
gawdamnn this is probably the best streetbike for the money
From the angle you are standing on talking about the license plate holder, it looks good. From the other side it looks ugly.
Also, why doesn't Yamaha come out with an R version? They could have upgraded forks and brakes, a la Street Triple, and still kept it cheaper I am sure.
fz09 vs st rs ?
soooo....,fz 09 or z900?
So you take a motorcycle tester/journo, put him up at a nice Hotel, buy him dinner & drinks & ask him what he thinks of their bike LOL.
when diavel and z1000 have a baby
Faris Ariaputra
my thoughts exactly
LOVE YAMAHA BUT THESE COLOURS WON'T SELL! Bring back matt black, racing blue and quick silver, Lemon yellow!
You looked like a badass in those shots
I'm English and love triumphs but it can't touch the mt09. In boring s trim it's a good bike but to get near the yam you have to have the r and that's over a grand more and to get a quick shift you hav to pay almost 10 grand. still with the stupidly off-centered tac
duhbullb
but they fixed the horrible tail end! 👍
I agree, the tac section needs a redesign.
No, TST Industries fixed the tail end. You should see their integrated tail light. I was the very first person to have it since I was originally asked to beta test it.
Nickel Reed you sound delusional no one let you ride the new one
put ur phone on the left. 2 displays
Nossa como esse faróis são lindo
I moved from the 2007 r6s after putting 14k miles on it because of my ex wife I traded it for a 2008 suzuki m50 (dislike it). Now I'm divorced and I think I'll get this bike.
It's now the law in Australia that new bikes must come with ABS. Its fucking stoopid to not have it. ABS will save your life.
im in love with this bike
The new head lamp looks dumb . But the new tail looks better .
this guy reminds me of Dana Carvey doing Garth from Waynes World lol....oh yeah and the bikes pretty cool too.
good review
hmmm i had those same blinkers on my 2007 r6s which was introduced in 2003. Yamaha.... its time to move on they look dated on a modern designed bike. Not to mention they are incandescent.
um hello?! You forgot to add it's wired for a quick shifter....
and slipper clutch!
P Banks Thank you! Motorcycle.com always leaves out details. I was even mad when they rode the r3.
