Sorry, but the iMac should come with an adjustable stand that can be easily replaced with a mount. That's just monitor 101. If you need to put your iMac on a stack of books in order to not get a headache, that's just poor design.

I work with about 10 to 12 hours of footage for a final video of about ore hour. I work with my 2011 iMac 21.5" with a 1 TB SSD and the old FCP 7. New Macs and FCPX simply are NOT designed for very long video footage editing. That's it.
We upgraded everyone in this house to M1 last year. 4 M1 MacBook Airs, and 1 M1 iMac for $1499. It is working out well, I can do my all my storyboard stuff on the Air, then when it is time for 3D sculpting and coding, I move over to the iMac simply due to the bigger screen and the built in fans help with heavier lifting.

had mine for a month now working in professional video/audio and it's worked mostly well. a large portion of my plugins are unusable. some companies say they're working on it, some aren't even bothering. it's a mixed bag. in some ways, my ancient 2011 imac with upgraded 20gb ram ran way better
@@Jack-russell103 Its great, so nice to be encoding a video and able to do other things without them slowing down. Tanks up less space on my desk, no fan noise that I've heard, its just a great all round Mac for most users.
Your point about the ports is a valid one, especially since Macs always seem to have a wifi clash with printers. I can never get any of my printers to respond to my Macs over wifi, I always have to connect them via USB.
Hey Greg, I was thinking of getting the iMac with 16gb for editing 4k over 30min videos on probably iMovie. Do you think there will be a noticeable difference between the iMac with 1 Fan over the iMac with 2 fans. Should I just go with the 2 fan one since it has better cooling therefore better processing?
Some front facing ports (usb, SD card etc) in the base of the stand would make the iMac so much more functional for daily use and not interfere with aesthetics. I hate flipping the machine around every time I need to import something non-wirelessly.

I’m a 2D animation/art student that uses multiple art and design applications including Adobe’s . My current iMac isn’t powerful enough to handle what I do/will be doing in the future and I’ve been considering to upgrade to the M1 16gb 512ssd iMac. Will it be enough? Or should I wait for the next M1 hardware in the fall?
I'm in the same boat (profession) - but I decided to switch back to PC. I've been a loyal iMac user for the past decade (2011, 2013, 2015, 2019 - always fully spec'ed - upgraded RAM myself though) but considering you can't do this anymore and Apple charging a fortune for upgrades - i just can get a way more powerful (multi-core performance) setup for the same price (incl. a monitor) if I ditch Apple. Yes, I won't have a sexy looking setup anymore - but I use my computer for work, which excludes admiring its beauty. Double the core count and RAM is preferable. I'll dearly miss FC and LPX but hey, Adobe products work fine on Windows, so I guess I'll just use Premiere and Audition from now on. It's an economical decision.
@@ahareally I think that’s the way I really want to go, but counting in the monitor that would haft to be color accurate for me for the work that I do, and other accessories that would add up for me more than if I went the M1 route. So I’ll decide to wait it out for now, maybe I can save up for a better option that’s PC 😅
i have a 27 Intel imac. I use 32 GB memory and i often use most of it at times. do you think the higher end 24 inch M1 with 16GB memory will match my current model or should i go for the mac studio instead
good question. I have a 2013 iMac and have video issues on online tv shows. The commercials get stuck and it is painful to move ahead. I am wavering to either buy a 2020 iMac or this new one that is out. Will the new Macs be able to upgrade OR do they need to upgrade anything? How long will it last for?
No it’s final cut which is apple made and optimized for M1. Again my problems, I don’t think most people will run into but it’s just a constraint of the 16gb of memory.
If you do any kind of visual work -- whether it's Photoshop, Sketch, Illustrator, Final Cut etc -- I can't stress this enough: get a minimum of 16GB RAM. 8 GB just is not enough. It shouldn't even be an option. It's only an option because that way, Apple get to charge USD$200 for the extra RAM, which leads to extreme profits. Same goes fora 256GB SSD. It shouldn't even be an option. Something like Xcode (+ simulators) will probably take up a quarter to a third of that drive alone.
In short: if you need a system with more than 16GB of RAM, the M1 chipset does not magically negate the memory requirements of larger projects. There are workarounds for the ports. Not the most elegant for a company that places emphasis on design and aesthetics, and at a certain point, function supersedes form, but they are available.
I have had my IMAC 24 inch for one week and I really like it, I got the higher end with 1 Tara memory. I am vary happy with it. I have 21,000 pictures in it.
Would you recommend this iMac for content creators? I record music in Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro as well for video music creation. No more than 10 min in length, 4k. Will it do? or, should I look at the new Mini or Macbook Pro instead?
Got mine on release day. Mid tear 16gb ram and 1tb ssd in blue. I Absolutely love it. I am using it to edit my drone footage in 4k and it’s great for me. It lives in our living room and has also become the family computer, i love how it doesn’t look out of place in a living room.
No, i love the design, 24” display has been fine for me, and the M1 is great too… really my main gripe is the 16gb of max memory for longer final cut projects.
I appreciate this answer. I need to replace a 27 inch iMac that the fusion drive has failed for the 2nd time. I feel like I’m downgrading to go to the smaller screen. I considered the mini but worry I may not be tech savvy enough to handle web cams, speakers, mics, external drives etc. I’m not sure I can wait for the expected 32 inch iMac.
@@dandles2010 My 27" was an early one so no 5k screen, that might make a difference? Get the 16Gb RAM and more internal storage than you think you need, internal is always better.
As a graphics pro, I’d love one of these or the current mini, but the M1x in the distance is haunting me to just wait that little bit longer. It’s annoying missing out on the current M1 party tho.
Would this iMac be powerful enough to use with a Scarlett Solo Interface? Your advice would be much appreciated as I’m about to purchase a new desktop over the next couple of days
Very helpful video, thank you!! Can I just ask, how does it perform with digital painting, in Photoshop for example? More complicated and big size brushes tend to slow down even very good computers. Would the 16GB and 8 CPU/GPU version be powerful enough for that?
Gerda, I have not been able to add Photoshop after hours of trying and searching forums for hints. The app wants Intel processor. Rosetta 2 is supposed to bridge that gap, but so far it has not. heartbreaking.
@@suzannewinz1099 actually I bought the new iMac a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have any problems downloading any of the Adobe Creative apps. And they work great, even if some are not 'native' to the new iMac. Maybe Photoshop will be even faster as soon as it will have a native version. Maybe you're having another type of problem? Are you subscribed to Adobe Creative Cloud? Seems very expensive for so many inbuilt issues, and being a non-pro model and having to pay extra for extra ports, which you need as Apple now have so many peripherals. Design over content comes to mind with Apple.

I need to compromise (because of budget). What should I prioritize: 16gb of Ram or 512 of storage ? Will be using the iMac mainly for Microsoft Office and iMovie… Please help !
With 16 gigs of RAM you therefore double the memory. It is definitely the best choice. Because for storage you can connect an excellent external ssd of 1 or 2 T for ENORMOUSLY cheaper than the upgrade of the ssd from Apple (for example the T5 or T7 from samsung). The memory is what will affect performance the most, not the ssd at all.
I still use my 2017 27” iMac, it is bigger and heavier, it has the i5 CPU. However it’s use is lightweight, I don’t do any video processing. Works well and I haven’t hit any limits. Still the 24” is appealing.
I have a question. So I contacted Apple and I have been told that this imac cannot be used as a secondary screen. Like additional monitor. My Silicon Mac Mini has a problem as the auto shut off on the 48 inch Sono Bravia keeps shutting off the screen & I have to keep refreshing the internet & then pushing the button on the Mac Mini & then logging back in. had mine for a month now working in professional video/audio and it's worked mostly well. a large portion of my plugins are unusable. some companies say they're working on it, some aren't even bothering. it's a mixed bag. in some ways, my ancient 2011 imac with upgraded 20gb ram ran way better
hey Stuart. How is it now? I am planning on getting it for premiere or da vinci resolve? Do you recommend it?
YEAH, NOT! LOL
Same here producing music on a imac from 2011 with maxed out ram. Works fins
I've got a fully loaded yellow one coming 16Gb RAM and 2Tb SSD, still about 2 weeks away!
How do you like it?
@@Jack-russell103 Its great, so nice to be encoding a video and able to do other things without them slowing down. Tanks up less space on my desk, no fan noise that I've heard, its just a great all round Mac for most users.
hey greg, are you still using your m1 imac to this day? shopping around here, and wondering how it does a year later.
Yo G .... what's up with the lack of software? Namely why no procreate? No sketchbook
In 2023 - what would you suggest for day to day professional use:
1. i7 Intel iMac 2020 or
2. M1 iMac 2021
still using 2017 27in imac with 64gb ram. no plans to upgrade,. Still satisfy no slow down.
Your point about the ports is a valid one, especially since Macs always seem to have a wifi clash with printers. I can never get any of my printers to respond to my Macs over wifi, I always have to connect them via USB.
I know this is an old comment but I always have the same issue with printers and my Mac. Wonder why that is
Hey Greg, I was thinking of getting the iMac with 16gb for editing 4k over 30min videos on probably iMovie. Do you think there will be a noticeable difference between the iMac with 1 Fan over the iMac with 2 fans. Should I just go with the 2 fan one since it has better cooling therefore better processing?
My choice is purely down to screen size - waiting for a replacement for the 27" iMac.
Some front facing ports (usb, SD card etc) in the base of the stand would make the iMac so much more functional for daily use and not interfere with aesthetics.
I hate flipping the machine around every time I need to import something non-wirelessly.
Yep, this problem has been around forever. Apple place more importance on style than function.
Plug in a USB hub and then you won't have to.
Do you think there will ever be an option or solution to upgrade the RAM?
I don’t believe there is. It is my understanding that the ram is integrated into the M1 chip.
Definitely not!
@@Unpeturbed Yes, but the fact that the RAM is integrated into the processor makes processing much faster, this is precisely its clear advantage.

Is this good for home music recording?
In ur opinion $1500 M1 Imac or the MacBook Air M2?
How well does it handle gaming? Because I need a new computer, I want this one, but I’ll I do is game? Is this one good for gaming?
i have a 27 Intel imac.
Could your problems with the iMac be caused by your programs not being optimized for the M1 Chip and running on Rosetta?
No it’s final cut which is apple made and optimized for M1. Again my problems, I don’t think most people will run into but it’s just a constraint of the 16gb of memory.
@@GregsGadgets I get by with 16gb of memory on my 2016 21" iMac. So, I think the 24" with 16gb that I have on order will be just fine for my purposes.
Yeah. It should be, again the scenario I lay out in the video is very specific. 30 minute 4K video projects.
@@GregsGadgets what about hour length 1080 videos?

Greg, what if the 24” m1 iMac was a 27 or 32” display with the m1 chip, would that change your opinion of it? 🤔 purely theoretical question.
No, i love the design, 24” display has been fine for me, and the M1 is great too… really my main gripe is the 16gb of max memory for longer final cut projects.
@@GregsGadgets thanks for the reply! 🖤
I appreciate this answer. I need to replace a 27 inch iMac that the fusion drive has failed for the 2nd time. I feel like I’m downgrading to go to the smaller screen. Does this Imac have any protection for eyes?
It was an informative video. But are you saying that 16GB RAM will negate the bottle neck you experienced when editing 10bit 422 long duration videos?
When it comes to my previous concern about a potential lag in digital painting: huge size and very textured brushes do have a tiny bit of lag in the current non-native Photoshop but it's really minor. Mostly works perfectly. (this is 8-core CPU/GPU, 1TB storage, 16GB RAM). My drawing tablet is a simple Wacom, around 12 years old.

Seems very expensive for so many inbuilt issues, and being a non-pro model and having to pay extra for extra ports, which you need as Apple now have so many peripherals. Design over content comes to mind with Apple.
There’s a problem that most youtubers reviewing Apple tech only ever seem to be involved with editing videos and photos. I hope Apple doesn’t watch them and take cut
See from them because there are a lot of pro users that don’t just edit videos; think 3D think music producers

Have you had any problems with the "memory leak" issue people are recognizing? I set up my brand new shiny 24 inch iMac with 16 gig memory and from the get-go it was in operable. Multiple tech-support calls involved running first aid, reinstalling the OS and it still crashes because apps are using way! Too much memory. Ultimately I sent it back to Apple for a replacement. I am learning from researching online many people are having this issue. As a diehard lifelong Apple fan, I am really disappointed and disillusioned. Especially the Apple is not recognizing the issue or offering a fix.

I do photography work, ill be editing lots of photos when i get a new iMac. The 16GB isn't a deal breaker but only a slight concern when i think about large exports and longevity of the machine. Im guessing I'm gonna have this for like 5 or 6 years before i upgrade again. I'm in 2 minds weather to get one now or wait till march and see what apple have to offer for a "pro" version. Great video BTW!
I need to compromise (because of budget). What should I prioritize: 16gb of Ram or 512 of storage ? Will be using the iMac mainly for Microsoft Office and iMovie… Please help !
I would say Ram because you can always buy an external SSD to expand storage. with RAM you're stuck with the choice you make
With 16 gigs of RAM you therefore double the memory.
Say for example I went to connect this to my macbook Pro M1 as a second screen. Is this true? If so what is the point then. The old imac could do target display. Can anyone share if there is a way to use this new Imacs and second screen?
My Silicon Mac Mini has a problem as the auto shut off on the 48 inch Sono Bravia keeps shutting off the screen & I have to keep refreshing the internet & then pushing the button on the Mac Mini & then logging back in.
I don’t think there’s a way to get the Sony to stop shutting itself off.
My girlfriends 43 inch 4K LG stays on for hours & gives you a choice.
I bought a lighted 7 port USB hub which is attached to the Satechi.
The Mac Mini display and speed makes my 2008, 2009, 2010 Imacs look like sloggy dinosaurs trapped in quicksand.
