Allen Ludden was battling deadly cancer here in which this was done some time during the summer of 1980, and then in October shortly after doing his final Password episode which he didn't know would be his last one and still looking radiant while he was taking a vacation he had a massive stroke which put him in a coma due to calcium buildup from the medication he was taking in hope of keeping the cancer down and then never returned to television again as episodes from various game shows he was in continued to air as well as Gas Co. commercials with Betty he just finished. Allen succumbed to cancer in June 1981. He was only 63 and outlived by his mother 5 years.
When he was replaced by Tom Kennedy the following episode they believed he'd never return but were telling him that he'd return once he'd get well. I a big fan of game shows was just 11 years old and was waiting for his return knowing he was hospitalized. All that time until his death when they were showing his Gas Co. commercials were just made and that he was getting well and was about to return to Password until I saw the news breaking out about his death. Then when the summer repeats came the painful memory kept lingering when I saw him not only on Password but also a panelist on Match Game and right here on Card Sharks which seemed so brand new which made me feel all confused.
well the Los Angeles zoo association meant a lot to him and still means a lot to Betty, I have a feeling if he busted out he would have replaced that money out of his own pocket.
AT 17:58, it was smart for Ludden and Martindale not to bet all their money on that two. Also, good thing they changed that rule later on where a contestant didn't win or lose any money on a push in the money cards.
I'm about the most NON-PC person there is but this is awkward. I was born in the 50's so know or know of all the classic game shows. I remember the name but seeing this I know I never saw the show before. I don't know if the "100 people polled" were those in the audience but if it is it seems like they were intentionally crafted to break up couples. Can you imagine the questions on the drive home?

This was about a year before Mr. Ludden passed away. He was just a good and decent guy.
R.I.P. Jim Perry and Allen Ludden.
Wink Martindale is still alive and has his own TH-cam channel.
Allen Ludden, in one of his final television appearances, outside of "Password Plus".
Allen Ludden was an amazing game show host, and left behind a beautiful and talented wife in the form of the legendary Betty White, r.i.p
You would not have guessed he was gravely ill from his performance on here.
I thought Fantasy Island was his Final Television Appearance.
@@ericandy88 Allen insisted on keeping it as quiet as possible, He didn't want people to worry about him. Much respect for that.
Vahan Nisanian I love him so much I miss him 😭😭😭
Allen seemed genuinely happy to have won that money for his charity. Good for him.

@@marcpower4167 I have to agree with you. Allen Ludden was just a really good and decent guy.
That was hysterical the end between Wink and Allen
Poor Wink couldn't catch a break with those cards lol. Allen was an excellent player, though. It looks like they had a lot of fun.

The rule changed started on the episode aired after this tournament.
@19:35, Wink DOES go to Vegas, Jim, he hosts, at the time, a game show out there.
Go Allen Ludden!!!
20:35 - "Hollywood Showdown" promo
Battle of the NBC Hosts. Wink of course soon to be starting Las Vegas Gambit at the time for NBC.
I don’t blame Allen for freezing on the 7. That card is uuuuuuuuuuuuuuggly
Allen, thought you got $200 on ALL levels.
