    Since people are still clicking in on this, and i apologize if this is mentioned in the video if I haven't gotten to it yet, but you can also transfer the weight painting from one mesh to another and it'll almost perfectly match up, instead of this manual tweaking he shows. There's a couple short and simple tutorials out there, and it can be a bit picky, but it does produce really good results!

    • @Sk4lli
      @Sk4lli 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no need to transfer the weights in this case. As the clothing meshes are duplicated from the body vertices they keep all the weight shapes. He just adjusts them after scaling up the clothing meshes. It's basically the same as creating a new mesh and transfert the weights, then adjust them to fit the mesh. Just less work.

    This is the first time I've commented on TH-cam, but I have to say, your tutorial series for modeling and animation are great! I've been following along and I already have a new character running around in my game project

  • @bruderbohne
    @bruderbohne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Cool video, however, I do feel that you are going to end up having a fair bit of mesh bleed to correct for when adding other animations to the character, more so the more extreme skeletal movement your animations imply, say with a strenous climbing animation, or the like. If you have two (or more) animations to work with, the iterative model of simply correcting the bleeds where and as you see them becomes unwieldy, as corrections to fix one animation can break another. If you have loads of animations, that problem scales very poorly.
    I suppose the shape keys to shrink the character mesh selectively can work, but, if we're doing selective "culling" anyway: Why not establish a model where the character is actually culled entirely where appropriate?
    I think textured clothes, along with more selective 3d-meshes to add brims and such to them, would be more workable, at least for e.g. a computer game or the like.
    Love your videos! Lots of great work.

    Hi Sebastian, I've really enjoyed your tutorials so far - they've been so helpful and easy to follow! I have a question - would it be easier to hide the body parts by just not rendering them when clothing is equipped to avoid fiddling with shape keys? Would this method also improve performance or am I just being naive? Thanks Sebastian

    • @SebastianLague
      @SebastianLague  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hello, happy to hear it! Hiding the concealed body parts would be ideal (and there would indeed be some small performance gain as well). Unfortunately in practice it's a bit awkward, because we'd have to split the body up into different parts (potentially very many parts, if we have some clothing/armour types which reveal different areas of the body). Since the body parts would be separate objects, there will be inconsistent shading at the joins, making visible seams whenever those areas aren't covered up. For this reason I decided to go with the shape key approach instead. I know it may feel a little bit 'clumsy', but in the end I think it works out quite well.

    in Blender 2.9 , Layers is replaced with Collection

  • @magnusm4
    @magnusm4 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder though. For optimizing do other games usually just cut away the parts inside that isn't shown?
    TF2 does this with different miscs such as the zombie skin which has visible bone and flesh on the arm for example. Meaning that the default arm would cover up the skin's mesh.
    So they instead have a completely different model without the arm for those specific skins or certain miscs that "remove" parts of the default model.
    Also it would seen pretty wasteful to have 30 rendered legs you don't even see. Maybe the ankles and wrists but everything else is covered up which would take frame rate for no reason.

    Making Shape Keys for the arms didn't work out for me, so will probably have to skip straight to the Integration part with the complete model. When scaled down, the arms became completely separated from the torso.
    Edit: Found the issue. I did not do "Remove Doubles" on the model in Part 2. In Blender 2.8 and above, select the whole model, right-click -> merge -> by distance. HOWEVER, this screws up the whole armature and animations meaning, if you are like me, you have to go back all the way to Part 2...

    Wouldn't it be best to have a system to hide different parts of the body like the legs, arms etc. ? This is how it's done in gta V depending on which clothes you wear

    Do game devs keep the mesh under the clothes?

    • @DriitzzCabal
      @DriitzzCabal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      depends on the model , this one don't have alot of vertices so it's alright to keep it under , if on the other hand you have a body that have lot of vertices and on top you add the clothing which also have alot of vertices , then yeah removing the body part underneath is required as it's not used and just consume resources for nothing. But... Correct me if i'm wrong on this but i believe that some game engine will know if it's being draw by the camera or not and cull it out for you , i think unity does this by default, in which case it wouldn't matter

    Why are we doing clothes like this? I've been messing around with weight on the pants for over two hours now and it still wont stop clipping through the body. I'm about to give up on this entirely. I had a feeling this was how you were going to do clothes and I knew from the get go that it was going to be a nightmare. You should remove the body whenever your character gets some clothes (just separate the head from the body). It will solve the problem without causing any issue (it isn't seeable anyways) while also reducing polycount.

    If you go into shape keys it'll bring it harder for you to.
    To make your character work in the game plus it also.
    Brings your character in a problem to Sub Surf.
    If anybody went into a shape key.
