"Instead all he can do is imagine that pint at the end of the session - that cooling, lagery swallow - and that first suck on a Lambert" so crude yet so poetic
A Lambert is a cigerette brand in the UK - Lambert and Butler, but we just say to each other, "G'us a Lambert". Hope this helps you enjoy M&W snooker commentary even more now, the lagery swallow bit is my favourite bit of this very funny take on 70/80s style snooker commentary. 👍😊
I don't know why these characters are so unpopular, as far as I'm concerned this is some of M+W's absolute best work. Edit - As excited as I am to receive replies to my comments, I'd love to point out to those of you still trying to engage me on this topic that this comment was posted 7 years ago.
God I miss those dimpled beer mugs, Packets of peanuts and all the other things like this in real pubs. Haven't seen a good pub like that since I was 10.
They're still out there, you just have to know where to look. Also, I have a couple of the dimpled beer mugs at home (and a few Steins haha!). Beer just tastes better out of them for some reason..
We've all been there once we've had a few. Makes sense, too: you're nice and relaxed, you're much more amenable to trying new things, and you don't have to worry about not being able to get a boner. 🤣
Ah i miss playing snooker and pool. 9-Ball Pool is actually more fun, but American standard tables are too small. Learn 9-Ball if you don't know it. It's really simple and much more tactical and exciting than standard spots and stripes. I live in Finland where some people take pool very seriously, but places to play have become expensive and fewer and fewer every year. There's an idea in these bars that a pool table takes up space for like 3-4 tables which is 6-16 paying customers, but failing to understand tjat the table lures in people who wanna drink and play. Just got expensive to play and the places to go are too busy now cos there's not enough of them. It's worse in the UK. Feels like the only place to play snooker/pool in the UK now is Hurricane, and that's a fucking rip.
Are some of the players they talk about supposed to be based on real people? Chris Lester/Leicester sounds just like the late great Paul Hunter and Jimmy Logan mentioned on the 2nd vid sounds just like Jimmy White the way theyre talking about him, lol
Does the drinking, smoking and homophobia reference some historical stereotypes in snooker in particular? or is it saying something about commentators in general? Or is it just based on 2 old-drunk-lads that they just randomly decided should work as commentators?
just search for a game in the 80's 90's and look at the players, everyone apart from the ref i think had a ciggy on and then there was characters like jimmy white with a pint of vodka on the go lol
I think it's definitely snooker related. But more a comment on the lager drinking that the players used to indulge in during games. The commentators always gave the impression that they were drinking pints too. The whole pace of the game suggested this. But I'd say you could apply this situation to some other sports too. In the world of snooker commentators, some of them used to wax lyrical about some of the players...who knows what was going through their minds at the time. Maybe it was just some kind of bromance thing going on there. If they were talented and good looking then the commentators were just slightly too much under the influence to avoid connecting their admiration for both.
I was actually wondering the same thing, but more importantly if the snooker commentators were as eloquent and poetic as these guys. If so, then I hope someone had a (grand)father that taped these from the radio and who now has an obscure mp3 blog somewhere where s/he posts these shows where commentators to the shows say "the expression the commentator uses at minute X is from George Bernard Shaw/Oscar Wilde/James Joyce."
the delivery of "oh and thats a bad miss" gets me every time
exactly like Joe Johnson actually says it.
@@kardRatzinger Ted Lowe more likely.
Me too lol
And that's a cracking pot.
It's funny 'cos it's true 😂
(remember the darts players sketch with Mel Smith?) 🤣
"you could put a gold fish in that glass.....and it wouldn't even die!"
As a huge fan of snooker, I can attest that in the old days, players did smoke and drink constantly, and so did the commentary.
Pot black was a riot
They also fudge packers?
@FifteenQs :: Not knowing anything about snooker, I appreciate your comment !
Better days
So did golfers and bowlers. Great athletes then.
"Instead all he can do is imagine that pint at the end of the session - that cooling, lagery swallow - and that first suck on a Lambert" so crude yet so poetic
Totally mate, my favourite line to quote, it never gets old.
What is a Lambert? Nothing came up in my search for it.

Look at that. You could put a goldfish in that glass. And it wouldn't even die.
"It's like Christmas, isn't it?"
"It _is_ Christmas."
*"OH SHIT, THE KIDS!!!"*
Despite watching the sketch numerous times I just noticed the “no smoking” sign in the back
I’ve watch this so many times and I didn’t notice it til I read your comment
Bloody hell... That snooker drinking game at 1:40 is GENIUS.
I'm in awe. 😮
I want to recreate that haha
It's the best thing on TV
.....................eight.
David Mitchell’s delivery of each line is impeccable .
These two really do transform when they play these particular characters
"basking in the light of twin suns" is one of my favourite phrases.
"Peter Ebdon, in particular, looks ridiculous". Brilliant.

Eddie Temple how are they unpopular
Agreed.
110% love the cap off with dog poker
one of the very few sketches from them that I just can't watch. Don't find it funny at all.
I didn't like the snooker skits when I first started watching, but now I enjoy them.
David Mitchell is amazing. Can't get enough of him.
Robert Webb is class too. Great double act.
@@YouAintGotNoTegridyBoi They are good yeah, but they aren't nearly as great as Fish & Chip or Pin & Cushion.
As an ex-smoker, Mitchell's way of smoking in this character just makes me crave for one cigarette.
don’t.
Delicious smoky cigarettes
The duality of man in can be seen in the other two replies
They did a lot of very good stuff but these two characters are up there with the very best of their work
Damn, I wish this show was still in production. So much funnier than SNL.
Not as funny as Mad TV
@@zapkvr lmao madtv and SNL might have a sketch or two but they are overall terrible
this is pure gold always
They need to come back and do this show again. It's so much better than the sketch shows we have in the states.
Logan green oh shut up you racist boomer
@@logangreen3616 shut up
At least you get QI which don't in Australia
The best characters Mitchell and Webb did.
They must have drunk so much cold tea doing these
I love this humour. Grew up watching snooker in 70s and it was just like this 😂😂😂😂😂

I really love the aesthetic of the background. Don't know why
Takes me back to being a kid and going round an older gens house. They'd have the same colours and decor styles as this - everyone did back then
That guy he cut was basically asking for it.
I love the line "Not a look to be taken lightly, especially on the streets of Derby at 2am in the morning....."
"It's like Christmas, isn't it?"
"It *IS* Christmas."
"Aww shit! The kids!"
"Not a look to be taken lightly especially at around 2am in the morning on the streets of Derby if the media are to be believed..."
He is a friend of mine. He is a sexy, young friend of mine. He is my sexy, young friend.
"lagery swallow" most beautiful prose ever:D
I would suggest that David Mitchell would make a great Penguin in a Batman movie
It would be very creepy to hear the words: "Oh and that's a bad miss..." as the villain steps out of the shadows.
Oh and thats a bad miss
"Oh shit the kids!!!" My husband and I say that line ALLLLLLLL the time! XD We still crack up!!! Best sketch ever.
I used to say that line with my cousins!
Made me all melancholy about me dad. He were often away at Xmas. Pissed asleep.
"Ah shit! The kids!"
This was the best thing in their sketch shows
When they called Dog poker
funny how quickly it turns from drunk jokes to homoerotic jokes
We've all been there once we've had a few.
Makes sense, too: you're nice and relaxed, you're much more amenable to trying new things, and you don't have to worry about not being able to get a boner. 🤣
"Eight."
I do wonder with the Headband stuff they're doing a subtle homage to Paul Hunter?
So, so funny 😂
(reminds me of the NTNON darts sketch!) 😆
"Another double vodka."
I don't know what it is about these characters but this shit is hilarious/comfy as hell
This is seriously the funniest thing I've ever seen
Never seen or heard of this show , hilarious 🤣
Saw them live in 2005. Great sketches
Love these characters .
Can we have these two doing commentary now on snooker? Willie Thorne makes me far angrier than snooker should.
The best part was he yelled "AH SHIT" into the microphone haha.
At least they don't shout out, "Where's the cue ball going?"
They drinking a form of home brewed beer that went horribly wrong, hence the copious amounts of sugar!
ironically nowadays snooker commentary is generally excellent -
I'm sure John Virgo and Dennis Taylor are sitting with a pint and a cig up on the commentary box
"Laaate niiiiite dogpoka!"
It's like Christmas isn't it?
m&w classic
nice
+Mark Hassell It is my Christmas tradition to always come back to this video.
"It is Christmas..."
"Oh shit the kids!!!"
I'm assuming Chris Leicester is a reference to Paul Hunter
Or Selby.
Every time the World snooker championship are on I think of these sketches.
twin suns. great.
And of course, they're in their twenties.

You know what this reminds me of? The commentators at Wimbledon when Federer is playing😂
Fucking brilliant. Their best sketch.
The smoking, drinking and eating.
simply superb
Hehe! I think I pissed myself little bit there :)
That was brilliant.

lol.. "i might have overdone it with the yeast"

Good quality everytime.
I doubt they're meant to be based on real people.
But agreed. Paul Hunter was veeeeerry easy on the eye. ^^

Yes to both, and I would guess the third player mentioned who looks miserable all the time is Mark Selby.
Does the drinking, smoking and homophobia reference some historical stereotypes in snooker in particular? or is it saying something about commentators in general?

Both, but its definitely heavily referencing the language, phrases and look that snooker and other pub sports had during the 80s and 90s.
