The English Civil war...wasn't technically about Protestant vs Catholic. It was more... Extreme Protestants (Puritans) vs. The Church of England (Ruled by the King). Puritans thought the Church of England was still acting in Catholic ways, and wanted it to be purified, to become more simplistic and Protestant in structure. This led to a massive war, which did indeed involve Catholics in Ireland and other places being killed by the Puritan (Parliamentarian) forces. And later the King got his head cut off and England, Scotland and Ireland became a Republic for a while, under Oliver Cromwell's "Lord Protectorship". *Nasty stuff, religious conflict.*
