In 99/2000 I was a journalism student at Humber College & Ryerson University in Toronto. I was taking a broad brush course on all media early on, and moving towards a focus on print journalism later. It was immediately clear to me that I was not cut out for the "future" of journalism. My love of it was very much mired in a romantic past, and the truth of the future (now present) was very, very different. The digging into others' lives with impunity, the increasing polarization through politicization, the twisting of facts at best, to the blatant lies at worst... it was a jarring wake up for this then teenager. I spoke at length about my concerns with my favourite professors and they each echoed my concerns, with several actually urging me to take a different path in life. I can't thank them enough.
I stopped using facebook about a year and a half ago, and have deleted it and twitter off my phone. I still use twitter occasionally but only for a few minutes at a time now. And no longer watch television. I feel much better, sleep easier at night, and can sort what is and isnt important to my or my infant sons life much more easily. Its been a blessing no longer worrying about the crap those applications are filled with.
I've heard from time to time from various people about how much better they feel after cutting off news and social media, but it's only been very recently that I've experienced it myself. Since school started back up for me a month ago I've spent almost no time looking into news, be it local, world, or otherwise. I made the mistake of going on Twitter the other day and was genuinely shocked by all the extreme negativity, even after only one month of being removed from it. I guess the difference between the world painted by (social) media and my everyday life also contributed to that shock; if I look on Twitter I see a world that's nothing but constant outrage and chaos, but in everyday life just about everyone I interact with is focused on the usual school and work-related things, instead of whatever the Internet and news networks are drumming up at the time. Really enjoyed the video DVS.
Great advice, I often find myself wading through my Facebook feed filled with inanities, provocations, and vapidity, only to eventually reach the conclusion that it was a waste of time.
One of my biggest regrets in life is my journalism degree. I never worked in that rotten industry and instead joined the military. Once I'm out I hope to return to school for something better
Cutting TV and newspapers out of my life was one of the best decisions I ever made. I'm amazed at how irrelevant so many things have become that were once essential parts of my daily routine.
You are MOST appreciated, missed (but for a grand purpose) and great to have you back.. Geesh david, you reversed the orbital direction of this viciously pre-programmed cycle of malignancy afflicting our world's collective "new" noosphere by using it's own tactics in multifold ommissive fashion against it, within it's own yet inverse algorithm .. and.. ha.. just by taking a few steps back away from it and actually LIVING for a time. I have to hand it to you my friend, you were more productive to us on your trip away than all of my channels running at once, continuously, and daily. Ingenious bud, can't express my gratitude enough.. Oh yeah, and for the WICKED cool icons too. (I'm actually not computer proficient enough to work most of these new app gizmos, just face book so the old folks can stay vusually in touch with the younger family across the pond.. Didn't how.. haha.. lucky I actually am!))
This ties into minimalism, something i'm reading about lately. Noise can also exist in material form. Thinking about why I bought certain things, why I displayed them, why I didn't want to throw them away made me clear out a ton of stuff. Looking back on the past years I bought so much stuff to feel alive, happy, impressive, cool. But all it did was make me feel empty. Now my room is much calmer to look at and live in, and I only have stuff around that I actually use and want to use for reasons I've thought about a ton. It feels so good. It also saves time because I no longer have to plan entire afternoons to clean everything, I don't have shopping sprees that last forever, and I don't spend my time scrolling through online shops looking for something to buy. I've also stopped watching cable news a few years ago, and am now trying to reduce the time I read newspapers online. I used to scroll through the articles when I had nothing to do, now I have a book on my desk to read small bits when I have nothing to do. It really did make a big difference.
There are two kinds of "noisy" detail - the artificial and inorganic (which is annoying to me) and the natural and organic (which I find pleasing). My office is lined with wood and produces far more detail than can be observed. There are trees outside my window. My pool is lined with tiny stones. As a whole, this noise is calming, like a rainstorm. Compare that to "clutter." The difference can be subtle, but profound, but these aesthetics can be found in a great many types of art as well.
Welcome back! You convinced me. Canceled Facebook! Never been on Twitter. Been thinking about taking a break from keeping constantly up with the culture war. Though now what I think about it, is it perhars your secret ploy to only make us watch you David! :)))
Wow, that's so insightful and spot on David! Thanks for the time and thoughtfulness you put into this. My action point: I'm turning down the noisy face-to-screen lifestyle. Now, I'm turning up (yep, "1 louder" ;-) the meaningful face-to-face lifestyle.

I studied Journalism before and ethics were constantly being drummed into me. So it blows my mind to see how most Journalists are out there, in the mainstream, are practicing, and implementing, totally unethical Journalism on a regular basis.
Good points, I don’t use social media outside of business and do t watch television with any regularity. But you did get me to watch a half hour of evening news just to see how much your points matched up. Hole-in-one, Stewart-san. Aside from the 25th typhoon to hit Japan this year, the biggest news was a major sumo scandal and something about a Chinese actress I’d vaguely heard of going missing? or taking a bunch of money, too. The Japanese have a thing for this lady for some reason. Buried in between was an encounter between PRC and US navies, a whole thirty seconds crammed between meanignky scandals that easily soak up 30 minutes each.
Great points, I'm still on facebook but I have muted people that only share shit, and I only use it to keep up to date on my interests, never share, never publish anything.
Actually what is left out here is that you can use social media in a value-creating way if you can exercise self-control. I at least try to use content-consumption as a way of learning, either by listening to content like yours, or watching entertainment like Lord of The Rings, but only after having listened to you or J Peterson and wanting to reflect on the story. On Facebook I keep blocking every entertainment site or funny video-producer there is and the most common thing I get in my feed is from interest groups or friends changing profile pictures, then Facebook becomes a way to to stay in touch with people, Instagram I use similarily and produce quite some Stories myself. Snapchat and Messenger is my most used social networks - does it disturb my focus when working? Yes, but it is friends I communicate with - and seldom only about trivial matters. It's hard, and I wish to improve my self-regulation, but I think everyone can evaluate each of their social mediums and figure out the best value creating way to use them. Keep up the good content! Your storycraft videos are particularily impressive!
I've grown so tired of people's political bullshit on Facebook that I now login just on the weekends. At first it was weird to be missing 5 days of updates but now that I am used to it I rather like it. Facebook, at least for me, is the most toxic and filled with whining. TH-cam and Twitter I can handle cause I'm seeking out information more often than its handed to me. I really agree thought with your sentiment at how much "noise* there is in our media / culture. Its crazy..
Welcome back David! I've never created any social media account. I'm one of those weirdos who abhors any and all social media. I didn't grow up with it so I don't feel compelled to use it. I prefer a life filled with substance, not empty and negative interactions. Thanks for another great topic/video!
I quit facebook and Twitter 18 months ago and my life has been there better for it. I need to stop listening to news podcasts and videos on TH-cam, because they incite those feelings described here and are irrelevant to my life. Thanks for the video.
Man I haven't watched cable in six years or Facebook in three years. I've been reading books and audiobooks on history, mythology, and economics and I can feel the difference in my physiology.
Given current events (I think this is always true) this video is now more relevant than ever. I wish this one would get pushed to the top of a lot of peoples feeds. It won’t for obvious reasons but it’s still a great video and great food for thought. Thank you.
David, good to "see" you back. Nice content, as always. I've sent you an e-mail about Philosophy and would be glad if you could take some time answering - even if only to say you are not interested in the conversation. Thanks for the time you take to communicate your knowledge and points of view.
Thanks for this valuable video. I wish there were more outlets like Good News Network. How can we call learn to understand each other better instead of being conditioned?
Glad to see you on the ytube again and hear your thoughts. Personally, I jumped of the FB bandwagon back in 2012 and rarely look back. I do have an account for family but I check that maybe once a month! Even forgot the password to it. In any case, yes the madness that has ensued our society driven by hear-say of trolls, activists, and tech giants has driven people to disconnect from the real world. Even saying 'Hi' with a smile of a passerby on the street is met with a scoul being as a threat to them since they don't know my social profile. In this event, I gladly await for social media to break.
The amount of noise is evident when you see a friend on FB post an image with only text in it, because they know text in a text box wouldn't get read. However, they fail to notice that text in the image doesn't really ever say anything important.
Great video! I've struggled with deleting my social media accounts for awhile now. It definitely seems like they're more of a detriment to my life than a benefit. Off topic, but I was curious if you'd consider making a video dealing with your religious beliefs/philosophies? I've heard you mention brief things in passing, but you're an insightful guy and I'm interested in hearing more of your perspective.
But what if I never used Facebook or Twitter? Not only do I honestly don't understand why would I want to use them, Facebook also requires its users to disclose their actual names, which is something I have no intention on doing on any platform.
I've also noticed that (about the news) a few months ago. I decided to stop watching the regular news, but instead the "Tagesschau in 100 Sekunden" which is a german version of the news in just 100 seconds. It's not wasting to much time, but I still find out some of the things that go on and could be useful to know.
It's a good filtering idea. Watching a weekly news wrap-up of a limited time amount is likely to discard more of the irrelevant than the nightly news as well.
I agree with the idea of what you are saying however I found a problem with part of your logic when it comes to politics and social norms. Social media and the news are saturated with left leaning viewpoints and their associated ideology and a lot of people are reached and influenced using these platforms. They are normalizing previously taboo, immoral and evil actions and ideas strictly through peer pressure by making it seem like everybody loves whatever they are putting forward and that you are wrong if you believe otherwise. If you completely disengage from the noise they put out then you will be happier and the people around you will be happier for a while until things seemingly out of your control begin to change your life. The problem is that they were within your control when it was being talked about on social media and you ignored it. You could have tried to influence people beyond your close circles and maybe reach someone else to think how you think. Two examples of this are happening in the world today and they are things that I felt I have/had no power over but I could at least have tried. In the province that I live in the government changed a few years ago to the far left option. Shortly after they got in the began to change the public school curriculum for grades 1-12 to be more pro LGBTQP+ along with a general shift to support their social and political position. Now anal sex is being taught to children in grade 6 and the rainbow gender spectrum in grade 3. These children are far too young to be influenced this way and I believe it is evil and a crime to teach innocent children these things and tell them that this is good and normal. I could have paid more attention to these things years ago before I started a family but now I have to deal with the consequences of my inaction. Another example further from home is the "migrant crisis" in Europe which has been going on for years now. You can see the crime statistics and the government crackdowns on anyone who opposes the mass unfiltered migration. You can see how it destroys the local people in favour of a foreign group and that it is destabilizing the countries and nations within them. The average person in Europe didn't do enough about it when the problem started and its only going to get a lot worse for them. Some or most likely buried their heads in the sand and ignored the push of leftists on social media and the news but now they are paying the price for it. Evil is triumphing because good men are doing nothing in order to relieve their stress and I am in that boat with everybody else.
Each to their own I guess, but I stopped watching or reading the news about 3 years ago I just found it so morbidly depressing. I have enough shit going on in my life to spend my free time seeing how crappy everone else's life is. I'm lucky I live in Australia where things certainly aren't as bad as a lot of places in the world, but it is embarrassing seeing local media here trying too spell down & gloom on miniscule issues.
On point I've stepped back from social media and news to find out what really matters to me a while ago. Evergreen content is the future. I've unsubscribed from so many channels because of there focus on exclusively being relevant. If I want to grow as an artist I got to be timeless.
I barely use Facebook proper anymore. 99% of it is pages I follow and not actual people in my feed anyhow. It's frankly boring now. I do use Messenger to keep in touch with a couple friends and family. That's the extent of social media for me.
This was a fantastic video David, very thought provoking. Very on point with your observations, clearly the month away from social media is a good thing, if your clarity of thought is anything to judge from. I feel much the same way about TH-cam, it's a shit site designed/run by scummy evil people, so I've started looking at ways to enjoy the content I actually want, without all the poison injected into the seams. I rather like hooktube, it's closer to how I think TH-cam ought to be.
And the sad thing, is that the themes in MGS 2 are a lot more relevant now than they were back in the early 2000's. Kojima was really ahead of his time with that game.
Solidus was right. His methods not so much, but I could see him sporting a MAGA hat in his attempts to derail the Patriots/Deep State/MSM/La-lei-lul-lei-lo.
Agreed. Both Solidus and the Patriots had very valid points and ones that aren't even in conflict with one another. The problem is that both had super extreme solutions, whereas Snake believed the only right solution could come on an individual level.
Dang, I should really consider myself lucky to live in a country, where making news that are correct is MOSTLY considered a professional honor and duty...
Just so you know, David - I'm a very big fan of your work, writing, and videos, and I'm a long-time enthusiastic subscriber... However, I've failed to receive ANY notifications whatsoever of your new uploads for the past four/five months. I'm forced to manually check your page, because TH-cam is clearly denying me updates of your work (bells fully activated, everything clicked and double-checked) ---- just thought you should know that your fans are being misdirected and/or held in the dark. You must've said something to upset our satanic commie overlords. I'll just cut to the chase: We are no longer fools shackled in darkness. Show us David's videos! PERIOD!
But myspace, facebook, instagram, Twitter AND TH-cam are all really the samething and do all the same damage to your personal lives, this isn't apples and oranges, every single one is in the same bag

Excellent message. I have been feeling overwhelmed lately and I think social media is playing a large part in that. Time for the chopping block...
AMAZING STUFF MAN THANK YOU!!!! I WILL LIMIT MY EXPOSURE TO DEPRESSING NEWS!!!!
Cutting TV and newspapers out of my life was one of the best decisions I ever made. I'm amazed at how irrelevant so many things have become that were once essential parts of my daily routine.

Welcome back David!! What a refreshing look, this was awesome!!
I took a break and studied astronomy and found a new hobby I can enjoy with my children.
Welcome back - thanks for this reflection! You're a lighthouse in the noisy, choppy waters of social & mass media
Thank you!
I have been practicing these principals for a while now. Thanks for the reassurance David. :)
Hi David, great seeing your return. I love your insights and watch most of your videos. This is another high-quality vid. Keep it up.
I really enjoyed this video. The description of how Facebook works was a highlight for me. The noise theme was also a great point to emphasise.
Memento...nice. One of the best movies ever made.
Glad to have you back. Your videos do a great job cutting through the noise
Thank you, David! Great message.

Welcome back, you miss a lot.
Came back in stride though.
You are awesome! Keep them coming!

Welcome back DVS!
Excellent points in this video.
Here I thought Americans were the only ones that watched news on weather that was going on outside their windows.
Great points, I'm still on facebook but I have muted people that only share shit, and I only use it to keep up to date on my interests, never share, never publish anything.
thank you so much David
Fantastic wisdom in a world of foolishness. Thank you!
This is such quality content! How the hell do you not have more subs! Loving everything since you got back, mate.
Actually what is left out here is that you can use social media in a value-creating way if you can exercise self-control. It's hard, and I wish to improve my self-regulation, but I think everyone can evaluate each of their social mediums and figure out the best value creating way to use them. Keep up the good content! Very interesting points, David. Welcome back.

Thanks, David!
Good stuff.
Yahoo Stories uses this structure. All they try to do is turn people against each other and make them angry.
Given current events (I think this is always true) this video is now more relevant than ever. I wish this one would get pushed to the top of a lot of peoples feeds. It won’t for obvious reasons but it’s still a great video and great food for thought. Thank you.
Hey thanks for watching
A belated welcome back, Dave!
youre back! finaly
Dat left shark
David, good to "see" you back. Nice content, as always. I've sent you an e-mail about Philosophy and would be glad if you could take some time answering - even if only to say you are not interested in the conversation. Thanks for the time you take to communicate your knowledge and points of view.
You have such a great presence, David.
Thank you!
Thanks for this valuable video.
I wish there were more outlets like Good News Network.
How can we call learn to understand each other better instead of being conditioned?

Very interesting video David, it really makes me think about what you brought forward. I also hope you had a good break over the last few weeks.
He's Back!!!!!!
I missread the word "news" in the title and laughed. How I laughed.
Good video as always. I try to zen my life down to only inputs that fit.
Great video! I've struggled with deleting my social media accounts for awhile now. It definitely seems like they're more of a detriment to my life than a benefit.

I wish I could hear Terence Mckenna's thoughts today. You're the best David, keep it up!
This has aged too well.
Spread this message!
Great video , have shared with my daughter and friend who are studying psychology.

I have enough shit going on in my life to spend my free time seeing how crappy everone else's life is. I'm lucky I live in Australia where things certainly aren't as bad as a lot of places in the world, but it is embarrassing seeing local media here trying too spell down & gloom on miniscule issues.
Kino Hieronymous Bosch painting.
I cut out Facebook about a year ago. So inorganic.
On point
I've stepped back from social media and news to find out what really matters to me a while ago.
Very interesting regarding Farcebook, nice to hear from you after your sabbatical sir
Thanks!
he's back!!!!! too much withdraw
That noise,
"..the world is being engulfed by 'truth'. " - MGS2
When Raiden confronts GW at the end of the game.
And the sad thing, is that the themes in MGS 2 are a lot more relevant now than they were back in the early 2000's. Kojima was really ahead of his time with that game.
The Patriots were right, they just had an unfortunately totalitarian way of going about dealing with that problem.
What country is that? I'm curious.
Germany, that's why we are careful with extremes, bad experiences and stuff...
Video noise encodes very poorly due to how most video compression algorithms work. Just in case your wondering.
Luckily it's just.... noise, after all ;)
Just so you know, David - I'm a very big fan of your work, writing, and videos, and I'm a long-time enthusiastic subscriber... PERIOD!
Sorry you are having trouble! All of my videos are mirrored on bitchute.
but if nobody consumes the news, the who's going to do the 'filtering' for you?
But myspace, facebook, instagram, Twitter AND TH-cam are all really the samething and do all the same damage to your personal lives, this isn't apples and oranges, every single one is in the same bag
This has become a thing nowadays, audiences and critics in a disagree. Venom 2018 www.rottentomatoes.com/m/venom_2018
It's off the topic, I Know.
I never saw the purpose of Facebook or Twitter. It all looks totally uninteresting.
Social media is only as interesting as the people you want to interact with on it. Personally, I prefer guild forums :)
