Hi, I follow your tuto step by step, thanks a lot,my aperture unit is now repaired but I lost a lot of focus quality,my lens is now uncalibrated...Do you a have a tip to re calibrated the lens by using the eccentric rings, maybe by using an artificial star, like to calibrate a Newton telescope...
I have a link to blog post about calibrating the 24-105/4L lens..., the general process is the same. The problem would be to access the eccentric screws which are covered by the white, inner lens cover tube... You have to drill holes on it to access the screws. Or disassemble the lens and check if the screws are in their original position.
@@CamerasLensesEtc ok thanks!I found the link...I think it will be playable with an artificial star. But with the 100-400 we have two groups+the frontal lens... Right? With witch one we have to start the centering calibration?Do you have an idea?
This is a great instructive video. My 100-400 MK1 started to make auto focus motor noise. If I hold the auto focus button down it will continue to try to find focus slightly and the motor makes clicking noise. It will never stop making noise and hunting for focus until I release the AF button. I was told my auto focus motor is bad. I see in your video how to remove the USM motor. I can order a new USM motor but it does not come with the focus ring installed. How difficult is add the focus ring and other parts to the USM motor? I feel I can comfortably replace the motor if I get clarification on the focus ring. Thank you!
AF hunting can be caused by a dirty focus strip also, I would start with cleaning it. To do that, you can use the disassembly video to remove the USM motor, and you can use the videos I have about cleaning the focus strip (17-85mm, or 17-55mm lens). The USM motor of the 100-400mm lens is very similar, but not the same, and it is relatively easy to disassemble. Alternatively, you can make a video of it for yourself, and if you have problems assembling it, you can see how it was disassembled.
@@CamerasLensesEtc OMG!!! It was the sensor! I cleaned it following the instructions on your videos and the lens autofocus works even better than when I bought used two years ago! Thank you so much for your content!! You have a subscriber for life! Next I will try to see how to fix my canon 24-105 lens slowly creeping out fully extended when it is aiming down from my sling.
Usually the moving parts are lubricated, and normally I don't remove the grease. But if the lens needs a deep cleaning, and I have to remove the grease, then yes, I put some fine mechanical grease on the moving parts before assembly.
zoom is stiff between 325-400. lens was dropped and focus didn't work manually. took apart focus works now but is still hard to zoom at end. Would it need metal zoom tube or focus tube with locking mechanism? Outside of focus and lock collar have abrasions.
I would start with removing thezoom locking mechanism (I have a video about it: repairing the zoom lock). If the zooming is still stiff when the locking tube is removed, then I would start to disassemble the lens, and check the zooming every time after a lens part has been removed.
At my case it had some grease on the tube, but the lens was disassembled by someone else before I did, and I don't know if the aluminium tube has grease on it by default.
Start disassembling the lens, and test the manual focus every time after you removed a lens part. When the manual focus start working again, then you'll know which part of the lens caused it.
Thanks for the help! Had problems with gap as well. But you showed where it was suppose to be. Just required a little more wiggling around to get it to properly seat. Thanks again.

@@exocett8163 Start with the lens elements which are in the lens (so not with the front lens).
Thank you! great tutorial video!
You're welcome! I'm glad my video was helpful!

Do you put lubricant to moving part after the assembly?

is the aluminium tube suppose to oily/greasy?

Do you know how to calibrate lenses?
Yes, I know.
my manual focus stop to work , any tip ?

Following your video and I keep ending up with about 1/8" gap between outer barrels can you help?
