Calexico w/ special guest Mariachi Luz de Luna performing a well-known 'son jarocho' tune: El Cascabel.
'El Cascabel' was one of the recordings included in the Voyager Golden Records, which were sent aboard the two Voyager spacecrafts launched in 1977 by the NASA.

Would love to buy recordings of Calexico with Mariachi Luz de Luna. Some of the best stuff I've ever heard.
I was at Barbican Center, attending this incredible gig. But the best was in Milan, at Tunnel club many years ago. The club was exploding and dancing. And after the gig, when only 50 people or so were still in drinking, Mariachi Luz de Luna has done an additiona and totally unplugged mini set at the bar, joined by Joey and some other Calexico. It was something special. It was pure and sincere love for music, which means love for life.
they did the same in Brussels in mai 2000 - it was absolutely Off the roof and Love for music as u described . The 2000 & 2001 Tours are in my experience the 2 Best Tours ever

When the violins come in at 3:57 it just sets off the rest of the song. They do an outstanding job. And then the "grito" by the guitarron player at 4:54 is very traditional. Nice job!

@Lenchito, however the Brits may skew from parts of the USA politically, they've always been receptive to great music from the Americas. The jazz and blues pioneers of the 50's and 60's found friendship and support there, many great British musicians took the blues back to White America over the following decades and much of the music from the central and southern Americas are equally well regarded today. This is a good example of all that.

This video is on my favorites! It is so awesome to watch. My husband is a music teacher at an elementary school in Houston. He teaches piano, guitar and what was a Rondalla once has slowly been transforming into a Mariachi upon principal's request. He was inspired by your viedo and just started teaching Cascabel to his students. They are pretty good. Congrats, everyone in it plays incredibly great!

The Mariachi group I am not sure of. But Calexico is currently out on tour and have recently released a new cd, El Mirador.

Joey Burns is the guitarist, and lead vocals of Calexico. He has a habit to whisper when he sings in english which makes it hard to understand lyrics unless they are given beforehand, but this not the case when he sings in spanish. The drummer is John Convertino and he is the back axel to Joey Burns' front axel in this music vehicle. The trumpets are Martin Wenk and the one Hispano, Jacob Valenzuela. Matt Dowse is on the trombone.
Thanks for giving a shout out to one of the best bands around, Calexico. I have never noticed Joey singing in a whisper and have never had a problem understanding the lyrics when he sings. They are out on tour right now, maybe you can give them another listen.
Both groups here are amazing and really complement each other.

What an amazing sound!! I saw Linda Ronstadt's band do this once and it was amazing as well, but I think this version is one of the best I've ever seen. Some day, I'll play it too!!!
Hello July ... No demerits to mariachi being accompanied by other instruments, enriches ... Remember that there are times to have accompanied symphonic mariachi, greetings.

" El Cascabel " is a rattlesnake rattle used to make music and accompany one in singing. The lyrics say: I went to serenade and give my pretty rattle to my beloved, who asked me to sing 'the rattle' in a low key. In the chorus or refrain the suiter pretends to be a rattlesnake who shakes his rattle in the sand to delight his beloved. This is a Veracruz folk song and like any folksong verses are added or omitted as desired.

The cascabel of the song is metallic, not from any other material. The song says is from “oropel” = brass
( a little round bell from brass)
@@spirosvolakos5798You are correct, the Indian musical rattle is from the rattlesnake but mariachi music is not indian in origin but European. The ' cascabel ' is a metal rattle as you say. My mistake.

So what is happening to Calexico 2020?? We love to know! We love to listen to all of you it sound like a combo of Cali and Mexico
Calexico was formed in 1995 after Joey Burns, guitar and vocals and John Convertino left the group Friends of Dean Martinez. They are currently out on tour and released a new cd this year, El Mirador. I highly recommend seeing them live, one of my favorite bands.

@sojoz4: Try to understand what types of groups are playing here --- a mariachi band and an English band. They do a marvelous job of melding the two groups. Especially when one considers the audience is British. I really enjoyed it.

The Word Cascabel is Rattler like a Maracas, that might be why they are using Maracas as it sounds like what the song is referring to.
