I’ve got a bunch of things to share that work for me. I keep a wipe off board on my fridge. That’s my ongoing list of things I need. Then I make my grocery list and I stick to it as much as possible. If you can buy things on sale or in bulk. Like potatoes, rice and beans. Also a big no no is do not go to the store hungry. I always go way over when I do that. 🙂
For budgeting: I use a spreadsheet and I categorize all expenses in houshold, food, luxury food, general luxury items, auto expenses, entertainment/eating out and a few other categories specific to me. From you haul I would categorize everything "convenient" into the luxury food category. Take the cesar's salad for example. $3.99 for 12 oz of lettuce with a cheap sauce is a lot of money. You can make that in just a few minutes more from your romaine and save at least half (Cesar dressing is easy to whip up). Another luxury food item is pre-grated parmesan. It's not only considerably more expensive than ungrated, it also has a lot less flavor. My tip: buy the Cotjia cheese TJ's recently added to their stores. It's a mexican parmesan, a lot cheaper than US or Italian parmesan and it packs a lot of flavor particularly for dressings and sauces. Tomatoes is another issue: they're out of season and flavorless this time of year - plus expensive (I grow my own so I never buy tomatoes except canned). Corn puffs or any other "snack in a bag" is another luxury item in my household. Well essentially you can cut out all luxury items and replace them with homemade versions. You simply pay for convenience when you buy i.e. shredded or sliced cheese. Shred yourself, store in the fridge and it saves you money. By the end of the day I spend less than $10 per day on food/beverages in my household (2 adults). We rarely eat out ($165.90 in 2018), but we do drink quite some wine so that kicks into the budget (still, it's included in the $10/day and yes, alcoholic beverages are a luxury item, so is soda) So overall, if you invest a little more time into prepping things yourself for the week (slicing cheese, pre cutting your salad if that's what you want to do etc), you can save at least 20%. If you cut out snacks - which nobody really needs and other cultures don't "snack" - you can save another 10%. If you eliminate bottled beverages that's at least 10% too. Get a water filter, make a batch of hibiscus tea - or any other fruity tee - and store it in the fridge: There you have a beverage that not only tastes good but also allows you to control sugar content. I just make syrup infused with flavors and mix those into water. They store forever and are quick to make and use (make simple syrup: same amount water and sugar by weight, add whatever tea - I like Peppermint, Elderflower and Hibiscus - simmer for 10 minutes, strain into squeeze bottles, store in fridge)
Wow, first thank you for taking the time to write such a lengthy comment. I find many of your suggestions to be helpful and quite frankly inspiring. It sounds like you have really gotten a grasp on how to stretch a dollar. Thank you for all the tips, I will definitely be using some to help me save some money.
Thank you for your hauls I know it can get expensive. I really appreciate it because of you I started watching your hauls. And I would get pen and paper and write down what I wanted to purchase. Oh I love the idea of doing a $100 budget for the grocery shopping! I'm trying to cut back on my spending too. Could you show what meals plans you end up doing? It would be awesome to see a grocery haul, and then see how you put everything together into actual meals.
Great haul! I agree with you about the parmesan cheese in the tub. It is very good! Am looking forward to your video on the black bean and corn veggie burgers. They sound delish. I wish my store carried the sourdough that is your fave. Hope you are having a great start to 2019!
We had had the carne asada beef and love it! But over Christmas tried the marinated chicken shawarma...it was amazing..we broiled it in the oven put it on the hand-made tortilla made a quick yogurt sauce and served with some cilantro and hummus... my family also loves the falafel mix in the box from Trader Joe's!
I really love watching your video! Saw some things there I haven't seen before because of my visual impairment when I go in the store. One of the things I love about Trader Joe's is how they have a lot of healthy options at grocery stores don't have when you don't cook. I love their salmon dinner for one for example. Otherwise if you go to the grocery store it's always fried fish in a TV dinner. I also really love her turkey meatballs and veggie fried rice as well :-)
Happy New Year Katie! Great haul. I love the vegetable fried rice it’s a staple. I keep forgetting to pick up that almond beverage. Glad to see a lot of healthy foods, that’s why I love TJ’s. I can’t wait for that Greek salad video.
Thanks for the info about TJ's stance on plastic in 2019. I love the store but the absurd amount of plastic packaging always bothers me... love watching your hauls!
Cute top!!! Sparkle sparkle✨✨. Love Pomelo - cross between orange and grapefruit TJ's price of $1.69 per is amazing and beats all retailers near me. Have you tried the Artisanal bread - the Batard lucky 7 Grain & Seed at $2.49 is crazy value!!! The fresh Bruchetta is indeed sooo good w/ romaine hearts yum!! Thanks another awesome haul!!
I am jotting down some things I want to try and those burgers are one of them. I want to eat less meat, not a real big fan but my husband is and I can make him regular burgers.Looking forward to cooking videos, showing the Greek salad and how to make those burgers
Hi Katie, Thanks so much for your videos! You show me all the stuff I've been missing at TJs. The feta is a staple in our house, just a heads up, Costco sells a 2-pack for the same price as TJs single pack.
Great haul... Just got back from TJs... picked up some my staples too including salads, cheese, fruit and produce. Also got the Everything but the Bagel seasoning... sooo good! Happy New Year Katie, Benson and Tim! 😃 Hugs! Anita
Great food haul, I've become hooked on the Southwest salad kit thanks to you! Lol I'm also a Trader Joe's girl now and have recently hooked my daughter in as well. Lol
I usually get the shredded parmesan cheese and put it in the freezer which prevents mold. Since I know you like Greek salads, you should go check out John on the Preppy Kitchen YT channel. He just made an awesome panzanella salad. He also makes awesome cakes!
Great TJs haul Katie. I always try to stay on a weekly budget as well. You got a lot of food for your $113.00. BTW what color and brand is your lipstick. I love it and you look beautiful!! Have a wonderful day!
Hi Katie, always look forward to your TJ hauls. Have you tried the carrot miso salad dressing from the salad section? It taste like what you get at a Japanese restaurant, very good. I would love to hear your opinion on that one. I love the cowboy burgers too.
I haven't tried that dressing before. I am a little leery of trying asian food I am unfamiliar with because I have an allergy to something (still can't figure it out), which makes me break out from scalp to bottom of my feet hives for a week. It sucks because I love asian cuisine.
I've been trying to plan my dinners around what's already in my cupboards and freezer because sometimes stuff just sits there for ages because I've forgotten about it!

Love your TJ hauls. Would love to see a video showing take out/eat out alternatives from trader joes. Any other suggested alternatives for eating out such as mexican, indian, italian. Etc??
What I do to budget on my groceries is to make a list and stick to it and be real with what I "need". I also take $100 cash so I'm not tempted to go over.
After watching this video I'm just thinking that some of this will be into next week. I think you might have bought more than just for the week, which is totally fine. If I were to cut back to be on budget I'd probably just make salad instead of getting ore packaged ones and maybe not the cold brew. I'm not criticizing you for any of your purchases. I just budget a lot and thought I'd throw out my tiny notes.
Mallory, thank you for the tips and for sharing what has worked for you. In no way do I take offense to what you said, and I agree. Making salad from scratch is much cheaper. I am vegetarian for the animals 100%. Once I found out how they are treated on these “farms” and how they kill them I decided right then and there I couldn’t eat another animal.
I've tried to find the Mediterranean flatbread at my TJ's and can't find it anywhere. Is it with the other bread? Frozen? Thanks for sharing your haul.
