I forgot to mention this in the video but I want to say that if I don't like a group's album packaging that much, it does not mean I like the group any less or that I think the music is bad. It has nothing to do with the group or their music but the company obviously who chose that album packaging. It is not a dig at the artist, just a personal opinion of their album packaging. :)

I so agree on those jewel cases💔 I can’t stand them for the life of me! I only have Jaemin’s The Dream one cause I’m pretty sure SM never made an official Japanese album for NCT Dream expect that one? I did so well for my NCT Dream collection expect not having the other members’ The Dream versions, then they dropped those jewel cases when they dropped their full albums so I dropped trying to have every album🤦🏼♀️
I agree on the «2 Baddies» one cause as you said, SM has been giving them that since Punch era😭 Neo Zone was their last creative album packaging it feels like💀
But to end on a positive note, I truly adored the limited version of Forever 1 too. It looks so good on the shelf and the photobook was so amazing🤩

I loved Key's Gosoline, Red Velvet's Feel My Rhythm (orgel ver.) & Birthday (cake ver.) and NCT Dream's Candy (candy box ver.) album designs!!!
I would buy oneus' and red velvet's albums shown in here just for the beauty of the packaging (i do like both groups so hopefully soon I order them), so CLEVER and amazing marketing strategy for sales, I feel like if I want physical sales I would do this, so fans get their money's worth.
Also, I agree that NCT127 is falling flat even terribly in this area, like they have one of the greatest concepts ever and yet SM is not landing it on the album packaging.
Red velvet is the most creative album and also satisfying.
It's funny how we all have a different taste. I loved NCT Dream's digipacks actually, I think they were cute, fun and also personal. Anyways, thank you for the video, it was great as always :)
I definitely prefer the small, simple book style to any other packaging! I feel like it’s so easy to flip through and they don’t take up as much space. No bulky boxes, no complications, no hassles lol I think red velvet’s albums are perfect: you get the option of simple book style and a special but not complicated packaging for the same album!

sm is the most uncreative with 127 and aespa and it’s so sad bc I personally think they both have one of the coolest concepts in sm😭 sm could’ve done so much for 2baddies they could’ve done a racer car themed album and inclusions or a toy car etc and for aespa I wish they gave us as cool physical albums as their concepts but sm just don’t bother i wish they both could get some special version albums just like red velvet etc. they both had similar album covers this yr where sm just cut the members out and slapped it on the cover of the album and called it a day😭

As a casual fan of a couple groups I find digipacks/jewel cases to be quite convenient because I can just buy the cover with the member I like on it, and it's usually cheaper and less of a space commitment! I got a Seonghwa digipack for ATEEZ's The World EP and I super duper love the design ^_^
I actually love member based digipack albums because I like the simplicity and I can choose to buy my bias's version(s) only 😂😂

Before I started collecting albums, I always watched unboxing videos of ALL versions of a specific album. At first, I felt so down when I realized there were multiple versions because I know I wanted to collect every album and every version back then. Now that I have 4 albums from different groups each, I realized that it was just simple. I set up rules for myself to avoid buying so many and wanting EVERYTHING. I first ask myself if I really wanted this kpop group. Then asked myself if I want majority of their songs in this particular album I want to buy. Then I ask myself what version I love the MOST by checking out unboxing videos in all versions and choosing the concept I love the most. It’s just that simple. There’s no need to buy every version of every album. It’s the joy of collecting the one you love the most. And besides, if you look at a shelf full of kpop albums, wouldn’t it look too boring if multiple albums looked the same because of every version???? That’s my most favorite reason of not buying all versions. And also I avoid buying digipacks because I think ahead of time that I’m not always gonna love my bias😂 cuz there will come a time when I eventually lose interest in my bias so it’s safer to buy an all member version always. (Just like how I did with NewJeans album). ❤ I’m just sharing this to those kpop fans who always feel like they want more. When really, it’s the process that makes you happy. The ordering, the shipping, the arriving, and finally the first unboxing.
(Btw shawolzenl, I’m not shading you, or am against your shelf of many versions of the album, nor am I against your decision to buy jewel cases and digi packs, this is just my opinion and advice for kpop fans who are on a budget like me, if they wanted to buy some albums. I love your videos always, shawolzenl❤)
I actually heard recently that TXT albums and especially Thursday's Child are meant to be ripped apart and have the photos used as posters! Mine fell apart about 5 minutes after I opened it, even though I was extremely careful. And then only a few weeks ago I found out that it was intentional! Knowing now that it was intentional, it still is not my favourite since I would have loved for it to not have ripped apart all on its own but it's not as disappointing.

I wanted the SVT album too until i realized that the way it opens is super annoying, and I hate it when there are double spread pics but you cant open it properly. The NCT universe album was brilliant in that sense due to its binding that allowed you to open it fully.
As for the digipacks, I loved the ones for Beatbox bc its the only ones where it makes sense to have different member versions, seeing as they had drawings by each member and it was made to look like a lil mixtape they made you.
i feel the same about the design of the beatbox digipacks. in that sense, it totally made sense to make digipacks and if that was the only time they did it, i’d actually love it cause it would have been unique and fits the concept but it’s being totally overused. thanks for sharing your opinion, i love reading them 💗
@@shawolzenl You are correct, the idea of individual member versions is overused, but over the years it went from a single simple album to more and more intricate, with silly inclusions lots of ppl dont even use, to multiple album versions and now even member versions. It became a chase to sell more product and even releases are more frequent. I dont like this hype consumerist trend so much tbh.
Key's album, txt thursday's child and red velvet cake version are deffinitely my favourites for the past year

I agree with you, especially for the photobook version of Sm groups and the Jewel case version.
100% agree on the member specific digipacks/jewel cases. But as you said, it makes companies money, plus it pads their album sale numbers, so it’ll never stop. Endless growth is expected in album sales, so they’ll never do anything that might cause them to sell less albums the next cycle even if their sales were only at the levels they were due to artificially inflating the numbers with all these versions. Luckily I’m not a collector so I’m immune to these digipacks as I always prefer something with the full group, but I feel for people who are collectors being fleeced by the companies.

Thank you for this video Katie! Happy New Year! I’m sooo done with the magazine design for SM they are doing this with Hyo, NCT Dream, Aespa and its sooo cheap. Same for their Flimpsy Paper Covers (Girls’ Generation, Taeyeon, Boa) is so sad to see a great and creative concept with a very cheap packaging 😢
I think my favourite packaging gotta be P1harmony's Find Out album - it isn't anything extraordinary, but it's a nice sturdy box packaging with an aesthetic cover, the photobook is absolutely gorgeous (freaking love the photography) and the extras were also well designed
I was about to say I actually looove the tear version of txt's minisode 2 but I think i'm more a fan of the actual photobook, don't mind the outside though it looks really pretty on my shelf, anyways I love when you do these types of videos!

I 100% agree with the digipack or jewel box versions of each member of the groups… If only they had better inclusions, but not even that…
Although I like the album versions on k7 tape, I wish it had some inclusions like the mini versions from SM albums!

I loved hearing all the praise for thursdays child because I feel the same way about the music!!! Front to back, perfection!! But i agree the packaging is a mess. I also have the Hate version but I've had no problem looking through the photobook.. upon further inspection of the binding, it looks like it detached from the cover and now all the pages lay COMPLETELY flat when I open it xD But it's stayed strong, no pages falling or ripping out! So I guess I wouldn't worry about being careful, if it detaches from the cover the book part still stays together. I guess the glue is just weak or something..?
i hope more artists release albums on vinyl this year!

I don't mind magazine packaging, but I hate hate hate when the magazine doesn't have a spine and is basically just folded in half and stapled (ie Nayeon's POP or itzy's cheshire)

I also don’t loooove the digipacks and case versions, but the silver lining for nct dresm with beatbox is that the members designed their own covers and cd plates, which I think is SUPER unique
Actually I kinda agree with nct 127 photobook packaging, they’re my favorite group and they get that. Also, I ordered the shirt version of 2 baddies, and the box was so like delicate and it didn’t come with a photobook, but it probably said that on the website I just didn’t read, so it’s kinda like 50/50, cause I like the shirt, but I didn’t get the photobook
Its intresting to see all kinds of albums! But its funny to see that you liked GG's album bcus i hated the material of the box. Its also funny bcus you compared it with Pentagon's invite u and i also have one and i liked the box material so much, plus it got magnet which Forever 1 didn't have. Ngl eventho Forever 1 did have alot of inclusions, but it felt really cheap (considering its the deluxe version). Like the CD box casing took half of the album space while Invite U cd just sits nicely at the bottom of the album without taking extra space.
Its probably bcus SM initially didn't want to make an album, they only want to release a special single (yep typical sm) but Tiffany fought for the album idea. So maybe there wasn't time to make a very nice album.
Not a multifan am only a SHINee fan and an occasional listeener to a few kpop songs here and there, but yeah I liked your picks of favorites. There are alot of interesting designs out there. Aww I liked Red velvet Orgel cd design and when you said the name it reminded me of SHINee's Orgel song. I think the cd being so small is cute. I agree I hate cds that are not attached to the album and just moving about and the whole magazine design of albums. I want SHINee's next album to be a hard cover and not a flimsy mazine style album. I want a cool design package! I hope Key can push for cool packaging designs for SHINee's next release. He's so brilliant!
i like digipacks cause its cheaper, and albuns where i live is just TOO expensive

for the txt thursday’s child one, i’m pretty sure the reason why it makes all the noises is because of the plastic on the outside rubs against the actual album when u flip through. not because the pages themselves. mine is on a little less loosely and it doesn’t make nearly as much sound as urs does 😭
YES, I despised the TXT packaging. And my pages actually did fall out I think maybe two or three in total and I only ever opened the album in all 2 times
the pentagon album gives luxury but it was a waste to not include a lot of inclusions like a perfume paper sample would’ve been cool
the digipack member thing... that just reminded me of how crazy it was when exo had the member versions for exodus (+ all of the members also as chinese ver). and now every group is just doing that. i literally remember being glad i wasn't that into exo and not collecting them. (but lol tbh i'd now like to have that album just bc of the songs)
For Sector17 , you could just open one side and slide the stuff out. Face the sun could be open from the bottom too if you don't want to rip the sticker , but I still find Face the sun's annoying tho :')
I personally love that sleek book packaging for 127 because it doesn't take up that much space on my shelf 😂but what i'm sick of is the member jewel cases/digipacks along with the large magazine type packaging that SM is doing
i love pledis artist, but man, i really hated their packaging this year. for face the sun and midnight guest, you had to open both albums by ripping out a sticker. face the sun and from our moments box had interesting packaging and both photobooks were horizontal 🥲 and mentioned in the video, opening sector17 is a struggle

my favourites being the generic magazine sm packaging because it's just so easy to store and photos are great quality, boring rly but i hate any album in a box even though a good 10 of my albums are box albums 😭. i also quite like digipacks, as long as they have a spine, though the dream beatbox ones were adorable. like i know i won't be looking through photobooks often so having the digipack option is really good for me, but if ur a die hard collector i can see the issue with them. like if the cancepts boring i'll just get a digipack, not a fan of jewel cases though.

8:46 I love this type of photobook, you can watch the photos again and again and the book doesn't damage so much (like nct 2020 resonance that the leaves break or have life or look crying like the txt album).
Honestly I love the Digipack version and jewel version. You can purchase your bias version but I love if includes the group version also. For me that I don't collect any photocard and I know that I'm not going to look the photobook so much 'cause, well, is a music album and I'll listen the music, this types of albums are cheaper and also is a environment favor

god nu'est had such nice packaging before the demon stepped in and it just went downhill.. and u can even see how bad the packaging has gotten for seventeen as well. i think i might be the only one who doesn't mind the digipacks because it takes up less space rather than a huge box style album. i will say i hate when companies put out 2 versions of the album and the inside is the same pics.. but the cover is different...ahemSMahem. red velvet birthday packaging was so cute and i wish they'd do something different for nct 127 but its always the same packaging... DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR ONCE.
Digipack packaging is my least favorite too but it always comes with the cutest photocards so I have no choice but to get them 😭😭

i actually like jewel cases, but it’s propably bcz i’m not a big collector. I bought I LOVE by gidle but only the jewel case bcz it’s cheaper and it doesnt take so much space.
I agree with you about the SVT albums. They dont look good, opening them is a mess and they have sooo many versions. I hate it.
I agree about the space thing with jewel cases. Also you can stack them up nicely if that makes sense. And some covers do look gorgeous (ive love dive for an example, but after like looks shitty) jewel cases are also just so common outside of kpop too

i always use a hair dryer when i have to peel a sticker off to open the packaging 😭 opens it up easily without ripping anything

that’s a good question!! for me, i just like to have everything for my unboxing video. not even necessarily for my collection, just because so many people watch my unboxings so they can decide what album to buy, i like to showcase everything in my unboxing video 😊
Oh god the Thursday's child album packaging is a nightmare ;-; I'm trying to keep it in the little packet it came with but the glue on it is so uncomfortably sticky, and my PCs were bent in the individual member version (plus you can't get the individual versions out without tearing the packaging). Ugh ;-;

The thing you got to remember company's don't make albums for people who collect 10+ groups and every member in the group in mind.. that such a rare thing to do
i.e i have 200+ albums but jewel member cases don't bother me cause i only collect my bias and bias wrecker if i cant get my bias.. and only for seventeen and nct.. not every group i collect..
so I only 3 nct mark albums this year and 1 jaemin.. and 4 seventeen member photo card books

thanks for the video, katie! this is very informative. weird choice of word? lol. no, because as a viewer, i can get sort of a perspective of which company makes the most interesting concepts in general and which doesn't (apart from the packaging).
sm has always had the best concepts (photos and designs) in general imo, though it's a hit or miss for the packaging (and prints!) really hate the individual member concept, be it a jewel case, digipack or other formats, on top of several other versions. capitalism on steroids, i'd say.
nu'est's front and back covers are really dull and boring, but the photos are really stunning! one of my favourites last year. but, like others have pointed out, pledis & hybe's packagings are 🙄
I wish SM would put as much effort into 127’s packaging like they do for Dream. I’m getting so annoyed lately that they’re getting the bare minimum and dreams packaging is flawless. I guess you can’t win when you have a favorite unit…
As if 127 wasn't the favorite. Dream were pushed aside during their early years because of 127. So, don't talk about them. Also, MaHae always present in 127, and Dream is always sacrificed when it comes to their schedules. So, fuck off.

SM is always such a hit and miss with their album packaging and it makes me really sad lol, especially when it comes to aespa. Praying AE1 has good packaging because for a group with such a unique concept they cannot be giving them such basic packaging.

When I opened mine, I didn’t know it was a sticker on top a pull out tab, and I cut through like a quarter or half the tab before I realized (;´༎ຶД༎ຶ`) It was also a gift from a friend when she went to Korea so I’m still sad I couldn’t keep it in its best condition

aespa has such a bold concept, why sm did such a basic album design and packaging for the girl's mini? i expected something cool and different like the p.o.s ver. + the real world version and the b-sides life's too short, lingo and icu don't match girls, illusion and the overall era... :(

it's not exactly horrible to have, I mean it does come with lots of inclusions inside so if you like that it's good but it's very hard to store (coming from someone who has Ryujin's ver.)

Interesting how you say Forever 1 was one of your favorites in album packaging because for me, I didn't like it because of one thing that I think you got SUPER lucky with. When I got my album in the mail, the sides came tore almost completely off. And I saw online that a lot of people had the same problem. Like, I literally had to tape the album together to put it on my shelf otherwise the side would open up and the stuff inside would fall out. I don't know why SM had to use such fragile material for such a meaningful album. But, I'll give SM some credit for now and say it was because of shipping. I just hope next time, SM does much more stable packaging so that albums don't come damaged in the mail like mine (and so many other's) did.

@@shawolzenl Same! The design was nice, the photo book was beautiful and I loved all the different inclusions after getting just a photocard ever since the beginning! Just hope that SM uses better material next time.
I preordered all versions of Face The Sun, unseen, and while all the concepts are fantastic, the packaging is just too bulky, and you have to keep the markers/boxes in the outer box to keep the photobook from slipping around inside and it just...wasn't well executed, designwise
