    He was a real nice guy. Used to come into the gas station I worked at late at night. His knees were shot by then and he had a security company and did security at the mall.

    Bad News lasted a little under three years in the WWF entering in early 1988 and leaving late in 1990. He never seems to be mentioned when discussing the heels of that era but he feuded with some of the big names during his short run.

    Bad News Brown was a great heel. The better the heels, the better the faces any company had. I had no idea Bad News helped Warrior like this. Too cool!

    • @johnwilburn
      @johnwilburn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Without a great heel to get heat, the face can’t get over.... there’s nothing to triumph over. That’s always been true of professional wrestling. The heels are absolutely essential and the faces can only be as good as the heels they have to conquer.

    That because Bad News no losing was his Gimmick, he did not lose Non Big Matches by being pinned. Almost all his matches ended in non Finishes. Usually Double Countout or Double DQ. Whenever he did get pinned he made a lot more money. Kind of smart, especially back in the day.

  • @windcatcher331
    @windcatcher331 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Allen was a very honest person and in truth, most people are a mixed bag and he would tell you that straight up. When he talked about wrestlers he'd talk about their assets and liabilities. But I don't sense any bitterness or judgment when he speaks negatively of people unless its Piper or McMahon. He was revered in the locker because of that simple honesty. People who wanted the straight up scoop or advice talked to him. Sometimes we all need that no bullshit comrade to tell us what is up

  • @windcatcher331
    @windcatcher331 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bad news had terribly bad knees which limited what he could do in the ring.
    But his character was ahead of the times. Possibly a grandfather of the attitude era?
    He was legitimately tough though. Bronze medalist in Judo during the 1976 Olympics. To this day he remains the only American to ever medal as a Heavyweight in Judo,

  • @HipsterEatinShark
    @HipsterEatinShark 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    He had plenty more than that. Revisit him, the guy was a good worker. The only reason he seemed like a "pretty average heel" (quote from a different comment) is because he never got a proper push, really. But his legdrops put a certain other wrestler's to shame, and you know, plain black trunks, a shaved head, and a goatee, well, of course that would never get over with fans in a million years, right ;P
    The man was ahead of his time, perhaps to a fault.

But I agree with everything you said about him. I always loved Ron Simmons. I met him when I was 10 years old and he was the nicest guy. I was in the Baltimore Arena the night he beat Vader for the WCW title, just a great moment. He should have gotten pushed as a main event heel in '96-97. As people we all make mistakes, Warrior even talks about the mistakes he made and mentioned when he asked for extra money. He didn't deny it he said he was just 30 years old at the time. That's the true mark of a person. Having the class to admit when you were wrong. It was sad when he mentioned the Destruction DVD and said he was heart broken when the other wrestlers were talking about how he was a asshole in the locker room and he never was.

    Last, you brought up the point of Stampede. Vince's attitude has always been if he didn't make you, he wasn't going to push you. Yes I realize Warrior had been Dingo Warrior, but in Vince's eyes he created the Ultimate Warrior character so that's the guy he's going to push. People don't realize that this business isn't just about wrestling ability and mic skills, it takes more than to get over in the mainstream. You need the look, the charisma, and the right backing by promoters.

    Yes, I remember Ahmed. He was a big, strong dude, and got a huge push at the beginning. But yeah, he was injury prone, and he was very clumsy in the ring. Was not good on the mic at all. He was very hard to understand.
    When he came back from one of his injuries, he was really out of shape, and never regained that pop he once had. I always thought Farooq should've been the champ. Ron Simmons was "Damn" good in the ring, and on the mic.

    Nodoubt, Ahmed was pushed huge at the beginning. McMahon did always love those huge, strong, bigger than life wrestlers.
    Another guy (although I don't think he's very good) that's been around forever, and has had Smackdown championship matches is, Mark Henry.
    I didn't watch WCW. Hell, when Simmons came into The WWF in 1996 I had no idea who he was lol. Even though he was a heel, I was pissed when he didn't win The IC Belt against Owen Hart. Ron is definitely one of my favorites.

  • @MrCODEmaster999
    @MrCODEmaster999 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think he hated the business in the ultimate sense. What I do believe is that he put a lot of passion into it (running in wild, passion acting, heavy lifting) that he sort of forced himself to hate something that he loves just for the sake of delivering a good show.

    I actually like Mark Henry. I know he's not the greatest wrestler in the world, but I like how they've treated his character since 2011. If you're the strongest man in the world, you should be booked as an asskicking machine and they finally started treating him as such. Simmons was one of the biggest faces in WCW in the early 90's, next to Sting. It was especially a big deal cuz WCW was the "southern" promotion. They even did a racist angle with him and Harley Race when he was managing Vader.

      It's not an insult. Brown always says he's in it for the money, too. It's why he doesn't mind putting guys over.

    At the time there was a Jack Johnson revival going on and BNB created a wrestling version of it.

    Yes there is, but's behind a paywall so I don't mention it in the comments section. Google his name and 'shoot interview' and you should find what you're looking for. He gave one of the best shoots I've ever heard and I've heard quite a lot.

    Yep. And the one time Booker T had to chance to hold the World title when it actually mattered was at WM 19 and they buried him in that match. By the time 2006 rolled around it was too late, they already blew it. And I agree that Smackdown title isn't the real world title. Look how its treated now. The WWE title is the real world title. Only black wrestler I think might have had chanced eventually woulda been Ahmed Johnson but he kept getting hurt.

    Anderson is the only guy in that group I even give a crap about. He's one of the guys WWE dropped the ball with IMO. He was getting a good push and was over with the fans...and then of course the Breakfast Club had to intervene.

    Yea Mark Henry has come a long way since the Sexual Chocolate days. Like I said, in 2011 they finally started booking him as a monster heel. He even beat Randy Orton clean for the title that year. Had he not got hurt he would have held the title longer, possibly all the way to Wrestlemania. A.P.A. was pretty popular. That was during the last golden age of tag teams in WWE. I never bought JBL as a world champion. The guy went from mid-card tag wrestler to world champ in like 2 months.

    Yeah, JBL, being champ was ridiculous. Especially his character that was champion. It would've been a little more believable if he won it as "Bradshaw" or the character that was the other half of the A.P.A.
    Yeah, they were popular, but I like Simmons better as a singles competitor, especially as a heel. I guess sometimes you just get hooked a character, and I loved Simmons as the leader of The NOD.
    It's hard to believe Mark Henry has been in WWF for 16-17 years.

    I agree with you. Unless it's changed, recently, there has NEVER been a black WWE Champion. I'm not talking about that stupid Smackdown heavyweight Championship belt, I'm talking the one that Cena holds right now. The Rock has African American heritage, but he's not 100% African American. Booker T. is the closest African American I can think of to be a main event guy, but I don't think he ever held that WWE title.
    JYD was my favorite wrestler when I was a kid.

    @Chargerchad I did a study of the legal case regarding the Self Destruction dvd lawsuit.
    One of the issues I talk about is the alleged Summerslam 91 hold up. I think Warrior's 1 million payment indirectly ties into the summerslam ordeal. I don't have the space to go into detail, but it was quite interesting.

    I think Bad News is one of the biggest dropped balls/ahead of his time wrestlers of all time. And I really think the only reason he never became a huge, huge star in the states is because he was a strong, intelligent black man who even Andre the Giant feared. He was too tough and too smart for any promoter to feel he could control.

    Antrizzle2009 They did have someone like BNB during the attitude era, but it was Stone Cold not Farooq. The heel type loner character who attacked faces and heels alike. BNB even would go after Jack Tunny they WWF president of the time. Stone Cold was meant to be this type of heel but the fans liked him.

  • @Antrizzle2009
    @Antrizzle2009 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Couple reasons why this isn't the case. For one, Hogan-Warrior was the first big face vs. face match at a major PPV in history. Secondly, I hate to say this but Bad News didn't have the "look" Warrior had and at the time period especially in WWF where you know Vince loves the bodybuilders, this was a major factor. Thirdly, yes race plays a factor. Very few black wrestlers got that over back then. I can probably count them on one hand, especially in the WWF. You had JYD, Koko, Bad News and...?
