  • We compared four different muting tools for bass guitar for that perfect Vintage bass sound: sponge, "The Fump" by Gruvgear, "The Nordymute" by Nordstrand, "The Bass Mute" by Ellio Martina. What is your favorite?
    The video is part of a written workshop which you can find on German music magazine www.bonedo.de/bass.

    The diy sponge always sounds the best to me in all the comparisons I've listened to.

      The only problem with the sponge is that you can't really use it live unless you use it for the whole set, the others you can just put on for a song if you need to

      @@flowerrs8741 because it takes more time to put on, and it messes with the tuning pushing everything sharp so you'd need to retune every string

    Thanks for this very cool comparison video! I had a '63 Precision with the foam stuck under the bridge cover. It was truly the best sounding mute. I sold it in 1968, which was a bad decision but who knew back when I was 16? I now have a 1966 and the sponge works fine and can be removed pretty quickly. Your video has helped me eliminate some of the aftermarket approaches which is really great. Thanks again!

    I listened to it because I was curious about the performance of the muter, but the bass performance is so great that it all sounds good.

    Sponge sounds best here.
    On the Fump, i unscrewed the armatures and added some paper around the screw to space the armatures out a little, massive improvement. It mutes too well besides, but i suppose it depends on your string gauge??

    Nordymute for me..
    It does not attack the body of the bass or with the tuning and unlike the bass mute you can place it at the distance you want from the bridge. The sponge in second place, sounds very good but depending on the density it could affect the tuning, in addition to the inconvenience of placing it or removing it during a show. Third place for the bass mute, you have to attach it to the body of the bass, there is no way. Gruv gear you're fired.

    the best is quite simple and it's what Jamerson used; the original fender bridge cover w/ mute underneath that pressed DOWN on the strings at the bridge (actually a section of weather-stripping) It does not kill all the tone-overtones-harmoncs like these methods do, nor does it mess w/ intonation, or tuning.

      I use a Velcro strap, with the fuzzy side of the Velcro on the bass, however it does make the strings slightly sharp. One of these days I’m going to try to do something like the nerdy mute but with a way to still Velcro it on an off.

    DIY sponge has the right tone. Shocked how much the Nordy mute kills the string and tone. Maybe best used for an Ampeg Baby bass tone than Mowtown?

    Sponge wins, hands down. Bass sits perfect spot and retains low end energy. Fump completely kills the low end and turns it into pure midrange which is horrible for the mix, nordymute adds some weird overtones and also kills the sounds too much, and the bass mute puts too much emphasis on the mids, leaving the low end sounding weak.

    They all have their own plusses- except the Gruvgear mute which, although it worked alright, came in 4th for overall cost & sound quality imo.
    1. Sponges not only work well, they are very economical and help produce that warm, classic Motown sound when used on a P bass with flat wounds. I rank it #1 when factoring affordability combined with results.
    2. The Fump did a good job of eliminating extemporaneous string noise; however, it also made the strings sound a little too choked. At roughly $20, I don't think it's worth it.
    3. The Nordymute was #1 when it came to sound: warm, deep, thumpy bass which is closest to the sound I always strive for. The problem is the cost which is roughly double that of the Fump. This would be my #1 choice if somebody wanted to buy me one.
    4. The Ellio Martina Bass Mute is very fancy, designed with a notched lever that ranges from wide-open to tightly-muted, and still manages to let the clarity of the strings ring through even in its tightest position. The problem?- cost and complication. The Bass Mute is very expensive and quite intricate to install on an instrument. As a project, it might be a very rewarding investment, but the end result isn't satisfactory enough to make it worth my while imo. #3

    I mean the real question you need to ask yourself to decide which mute to use is “why?” Is it for sustain control? Is it for overtone/freq control? Or something else? Or both?! Each mute accomplishes something very different. Some cut more, some change the sustain and some change the attack more! Also consider functionality. Lastly everyone forgetting about the mute built into your hand (it’s free)

  • @Karmaneoeric
    @Karmaneoeric ปีที่แล้ว +3

    They are all wrong. they all make your intonation out of tune. The only way of doing it is with a bridge cover with a 'not too tight' piece of foam over the bridge.

    • @BigBri550
      @BigBri550 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can always intonate your instrument with the string mute on which solves the tuning issue.
      You can also do a mute wrap: they're about 10 bucks at the most, or you can just cut a strip of Volcro and wrap it around which does basically the same thing. The only problem is that they have to cover one of the frets, so you need to figure out which fret you can live without on a particular piece.
      Btw, Fender used to attach a foam string dampening strip on the underside of their P bass bridge covers. But they weren't adjustable, and that's the drawback to over-the-string dampeners.
