PC VR's BIGGEST Innovation | Boost Framerates Immensely!

  • Thanks to AMD's open source FidelityFX, a passtionate member of the VR community has created a mod that allows you to activate the functionality for a LARGE library of Steam VR games to get better framerates/resolutions.
    In this video I talk about why this is a huge deal, and what it says for the future of PC VR.
    Link to mod: github.com/fholger/openvr_fsr
    FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR for short) is an upscaling technique developed by AMD, but it works on pretty much any graphics card, including NVIDIA cards. The idea is that the game internally renders to a lower resolution, thus saving GPU time and reaching higher FPS, as long as it is not bottlenecked by the CPU. The resulting lower resolution render is then upscaled to the target resolution by FSR, with the aim of restoring some of the lost detail due to the lower resolution rendering. It does so in two steps - the first being the actual upscaling to the target resolution, where particular attention is paid to edges in the lower resolution picture. The second step is a sharpening step to counter some of the blur introduced by the upscaling.

      I'll have to try it myself, but it seems counter-productive to stack FSR with SS, as multiple re-scaling compounds artefacting and errors. This seems evident in the excessive amount of 'twinkles' in your FSR-on footage, but maybe that gets attenuated in the final VR render?..

    • @SadlyItsBradley
      @SadlyItsBradley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@vladtheinhaler93 I was using performance mode which will just overall give the worse quality. And it shows. Honestly, I think having SS up and then going with basical Quality or Ultra Quality settings will still give a great result. FSR works best with higher resolutions so SS still quite useful for fixing the lack of Aliasing from FSR

    Imo the marketing of FSR and DLSS is reverse of what it should be. It is not really a performance improvement per se, because I could already decrease the resolution before. Rather, for little runtime cost, I can increase the image quality by using a high quality upscaling technique, without increasing the render resolution beyond what my GPU can handle.

FSR by defualt setting reducing rendering resolution from 100% to 75%. If you compare it to 75% SteamVR resolution settings - you will see same: visual and framtimes are the same. Ryzen X3D series make things amazing for VRCHAT with the internal VRChat settings turned all the way up and the steamvr settings turned all the way up while in a unoptimized world with alot of users using unoptimized avatars. It's a game changer.
      The only other way to avoid the lag is turning VRChat graphics settings all the way down and steamvr settings (in my case) all the way to at least base resolution and 90hz to be able to handle a room full of people.

    Made some tests on FSR, but it looks technically downscaling for me. If you downscale it, you render less pixels = less work for GPU -> better FPS. But how does it look with downscaling option with FSR? Of must i start at lower resolution, and use FSR to upscale it? But downscaling can make less sharp view! Upscaling will give slight blurry view.
    Which way is better? Downscale it? Or upscale it? When matched for same resolution, there was almost no gain. Did i wrong setup? I hope others can tell me which way is better so FSR effect will visible.

    Doesn't that bother you while playing?
    I getting headaches from this 1-second hiccups in those games and thought there is maybe something really weird with my I7-8700k, but now I wonder if this is normal in these games? I was searching so long and desperately for a fix, sadly the FSR mod does not change it, but it's still very good.

    It's also been run on DCS. Il-2 has some issues with it, but it does seem to help on DCS.
    That said, I'd ended up needing to really dial up the upscaling, and ended up not really liking how much shimmer it was adding, so ended up using DCS' native scaler. Was trying to run a VP2 in a 1080 Ti, and that's really not enough GPU for that headset.

    • @nyandyn
      @nyandyn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use FSR in DCS, the end result is basically the same as running the game on a lower SS%, i.e. everything will become blurry. The additional sharpening makes it worth installing, however.

    I tried it in DCS with sharpness and upscaling setting to 75, the default setting. It had very noticeable jaggies, it looked really awful for me. It just made DCS look worse! I even noticed more jaggies in the comparison video's in this video.
    MSFS 2020 is openxr, so it won't work with that title. I also tried it with Star Wars Squadrons and the game would not start due to the replaced file.
    Maybe AMD FSR works better with higher resolution HMD's?

      Unlike most dedicated VR titles, DCS really requires a high pixel density and downsampling-then-upscaling is not going to magically conjure those required tiny details out of nowhere. That additional sharpen filter makes the game look much better, however, so you can keep FSR at 1.00 and enjoy the crisp clear picture.

If it's a slow title with no movement then you can notice it(when you have the resolution scale at 50%) but anything with a lot of motion (especially with motion blur) then you can't really tell the difference tbh. VR would be better honestly then traditional gaming since you are moving your head a lot.
