    • @foglias
      @foglias 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For what I could tell on your two comment is that probably you are assesing the editing on how quick the film pays off for you, based on your attention span. And I know is always worth to applaud a film that manages to run smoothly through the runtime surging many narrative tones. Parasite is well deserving of the award but saying that The Irishman should be trimmed denotes that you didn't pay much attention to the story and to what Scorsese was trying to convey and also, not having noticed how complex and multilayered the story really is, and how the editor managed to use different techniques to keep the pacing of the film without missing any relevant information, the fractured narrative that works very well is hard to make in a 3 and a half hour film, and the editing is always dictating the weight of the narrative.

  • @MayorOfEarth79
    @MayorOfEarth79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +159

    Since several commenters are adding to the "This should have gotten nominated!" discussion; I'd like to throw in Nick Houy who did the Editing for Little Women.
    Similar to The Irishman, Little Women's storytelling relies so much on the editing to get you from time period to time period without feeling jarring. Since Gerwig decided to jump between the two time periods rather than tell the straight-forward adaptation, it's so critical you feel the sense of growth, development, and emotion as all the characters become older. So when you get the joy of the father coming home for Christmas and then get a similar scene where Jo walks downstairs, the emotional punch gets you even harder. Or when you see Laurie's declarations of love go between the two time periods between different people and in different context. It's why I also loved his work in Lady Bird, cause he made an entire year fly however you really saw how much Lady Bird herself changed over time going in and out of friendships while making it all feel so real.
    Great video. I'm real happy that this highlighted more of the benefits of each nomination.

    The comment section unanimously agrees on Parasite and while I too think Parasite's editing is a masterpiece, I'd have to go with The Irishman. I mean firstly it's THELMA SCHOONMAKER and secondly the film has an otherworldly quality as if the protagonist is actually recounting the events of his past in his head like a memory. It's a wildly edited film to the point of feeling like it's stream of consciousness and despite being over three hours long the pacing is tight and the film just flies by. I especially loved the ending when Frank slowly disintegrates due to old age, a sentiment that is reflected in the slow, languid editing style. It's absolutely flawless.

    I'm never going to question how much editing and a skilled editor can impact a film and its quality.
    What I AM curious about is how much of the editing decisions are made by the editor versus the director? Yes, the editor is doing the physical work, but is it the director who decided to use those takes, angles, and cut/not cut at those times, as well as what they want to hear in the audio? Or does he/she wait for the editor to bring his/her version to a scene and then go from there?

      @ThomasFlight  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s different for every Director/Editor team. Sometimes the directors dictate the cuts. Usually the editor looks at the footage, and makes an initial cut based on the script, and then works with the director to modify it until the director is happy. But every editor and director work a little differently.

      @@ThomasFlight Well, because here is one of my qualms with Joker, and I don't know whether to throw it onto Todd Phillips or Jeff Groth:
      They insisted a few too many times on undermining the audience's intelligence with exposition, and a lot of it was visually done. I think you know of one bit in particular where I sat there saying: "I KNOW that this is the case, so why are you showing me again?"
      I thought that it was an incredibly poor decision, among a couple of other moments, that really knocks it down in my book. And I'm not saying that the film is terribly edited, but terrible decisions like these ones takes it out of contention for me for Best Editing among the other several hundred films that released that year.
      I would have chosen Greta Gerwig and her editor for Little Women above Joker's crew. They had to interweave a strong, cohesive storytelling narrative and arc with timeline jumps AND NO PROMPTS (except for the first time to give reference), and not lose the crowd all the meanwhile or expose them to information before they ever should have. This was all told with a constant rhythm of a score that sequenced naturally between one scene to the next, one mood to the next, one character to the next, etc. Basically, here I thought the score was a character in itself, and that was thanks to the editing.
      Again, I'm not sure who to credit or discredit in these. The point is I think that with one must come the other, and in a case like this I absolutely have to give it to Little Women above Joker. And don't get me wrong, I like Joker more as a film. I just did not agree with this thought at all, though.

    2019 was one of the best years for film-period. Joker, The Irishman, The Lighthouse, Ford v Ferrari, Little Women, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-man:Far From Home, Marriage Story, Once Upon A Time . . . In Hollywood, 1917, Ad Astra, Motherless Brooklyn, Glass, The Peanut Butter Falcon, Us, Uncut Gems, Midsommar, IT: Chapter Two, Rocketman, John Wick Chapter 3. It will be quite a while before we get another year like this.

    I think "The Irishman" is really well put together in terms of just the overall picture. When it comes to the question of how well a movie is edited, many people focus on shot-by-shot editing, which is obviously important. But it's also essential to put all the individual scenes together so it tells the story well and doesn't drag. That's a lot more difficult and important than many people give editors credit for.
    I think this has to do with the fact that many people consider this stuff to be entirely part of the script. And although it's correct that the script gives the overall progression of the story, the editing eventually dictates the pace AND the flow of the story. And an editor needs to be able to make stuff works that might have worked on the pages, but then didn't translate well onto the camera.

    I would’ve voted for Jojo Rabbit simply for the exact reasons you listed. As a comedy that relies largely on visual gags for comedic relief it’s story literally depends on the quality of editing. Unlike the other movies which would not have been as effective, if Jojo had bad editing it would’ve downright failed.
    But this was a tough one. So many great choices. Thanks for teaching me so much about film!

    I have to agree with you on Parasite. I''m no expert in film editing, but the experience of watching it was something else. I had heard lots of good things about it, but wasn't exactly dying to see it, since I had no idea what it was about. One night I suggested to my girlfriend that we watch it, and we were enthralled the entire time. Every single scene in the film serves the story. I don't think I can say that about many films I've watched.

    Not necessarily the best reason to warrant a win, but there was a particular cut in The Irishman that really stood out for me and made me (naively) feel as though it should've got the win. Just because it is a such a powerful jump cut that worked so effectively. It's the cut from the scene where Crazy Joe insults Frank and Russell at the Cococabana, where Russ and Frank look at each other after the interaction, and then CUT to a bed full of guns. The reaction from the crowd when I saw it in the cinema was just amazing.

    Looking back at the Oscars as the last Oscars I really cared about and it's crazy to realize that Parasite should have won even more Oscars than it already did. Korean films and TV shows are just on another level and I wonder just how much of it is their unique setup. Watching shows like Running man and Men on a Mission it's crazy how many cameras they use (it's like over 20). 봉준호 also mentioned how they get a very rough edit right there on set, so you can adapt on the fly I guess that must be part of why every KR show looks so clean. Love that you predicted Ford v Ferrari because of the difficulty that came with it. It does seem like the two films the academy would consider where Joker and FvF, while the actual winner imo should clearly have been Parasite.
