Well, they did bail. Of course they're pulling the "We'll get ya next time" promise while having plenty of time to rehash Bonjour-Hi. Quebec Solidaire are now the only provincial party in parliament that hasn't blown it on electoral reform so I'll be backing them until this distortion of democracy is dealt with.
Not even Canadian and I still clicked on this faster than you could say "proportional representation." Seriously though, Canada needs to get their shit together to get proportional representation in sooner rather than later, for the sake of democracy. As a New Zealander, I couldn't imagine my government without proportional representation-anything less and it just doesn't feel nor function nearly as democratic as PR.
It's so hard to change this system, the path to reform is a decade long with each fork in the road potentially resetting your progress. But we only got to this particular fork because a lot of people worked very very hard for decades, and we owe it to them to have their back.
Just did it to the member that serves Mont Tremblant. Why? Idk, I love Mont-Tremblant and the CAQ won there. Also, I urged them to reform urbanism rules and focus on quality design, so that Quebec doesn't become uglier.
alright did the thing. And I have made the personal note that if this ends up not working, and june they do indeed kill bill 39, I will write a letter to the MNA rep for whatever riding I will be in and tell them hey if they want my vote do the referendum the CAQ didnt do.
Albertan here wanting to move to MTL, just send this to my friend in Quebec, I had no clue this was even being proposed in Canada. Political policy change seems so out of reach cuz it seems so rare that I was shocked this was already in the works
As a fellow albertan who has moved to MTL. If you arent already doing some sort of french learning you should start. Whether its apps or online courses. You can get away with just english and then do more learning as you go when you get here but having any knowledge of french is good.
Hi Paige! Just wanted to let you know that I love your videos. All of them. I've lived in Montreal for just over ten years now, coming from another part of Quebec in my early twenties. It took me that long to feel like this was now truly my home to the point that I'm invested in what happens here (might be also the growing up). You've inspired me to be not just more aware but active about what is happening in local and provincial politics and slip that into conversation with friends and colleagues. I've sent an email to Sonia. If they won't outright give it to us, we need to be able to tell them we want it!
Cela signifie beaucoup pour moi. Les gens que j'ai rencontrés lorsque j'ai déménagé ici m'ont inspiré. C'est une ville incroyable, parce que les gens se soucient.
Thanks for taking the time. Its easier to be passionate when you know you’re not alone in caring about these technical but incredibly important things.
The garbage in garbage out problem also applies to the electorate and it is very tough to argue there isn't a problem with the electorate in Canada when a little under 23 million of the 27ish million tax payers are paying below the average amount of tax while the top reported earnings bracket (over 250k) is paying 24% of the total tax while only earning 12% of the total income. You can't have a well functioning democracy when such a high percentage of people effectively have no skin in the game other than the risk of those top earners leaving because the low paying majority miscalculated how much they could steal from the top earners before those guys got fed up enough to leave.
Here is your list of "well functioning democracies": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_tax#Around_the_world Which one should be Canada's guiding light when it comes to the strength of it's democracy?
@blarg while I agree with you that it is not healthy for a democracy when many people not really participate in paying taxes I definitely disagree with your reason for this. Do you really think all those low payers would not like to change side? There was no increase in real wages since the 80ies. Since the financialisation of the corporations the gap is growing. Not only6in wages but also in taxes. I don't think the "low paying majority" is happy about that and decided to go this way. Neoliberalism of the 80ies was a push from the rich ones to get richer, not from the low tax payers to get less.
I was gonna make a joke but I really really want that electoral reform to pass. Proportional representation all the way. Although I'm gonna reword my email, because that is way too aggressive in my opinion. I also think they might filter out copy-pasted emails, and I wouldn't want this one to go unnoticed.
Well you know, there is a number of emails where a local representative calls HQ to ask "Hey, we're doing this right? I'm getting a lot of emails!" Your email just added one more to the pile, and maybe it'll be the one that got them to pickup the phone.
Hey Paige, thanks for talking about this! Just a small note, the google doc in the description is not accessible currently. I think the link sharing isn't enabled.
Fixed. Thank you so much for letting me know, I already said that people in CAQ ridings who send emails are the MVP in the video, but you're a close second.
Please, redo this video in French. Even if your french is broken or meh, you wouldn't believe how helpful it would be to share your video. Edit : If you live in a QS or PQ riding, here's a very good thing to do : write an email to Sonia LeBel, and add your elected official in CC telling him to keep up his good work.
I'll think about if I can manage one when I'm less exhausted. I thought my job in this referendum was talking to the Anglos, they're the community that is most skeptical of ProRep. But you know, fuck it, je suis Montrealais, s'il faut le faire, il faut le faire. The problem is (Asides from how hard I find it to express myself) I actually have a different personality in French. I'm less confident, more careful you know? I don't think you would get the same video at all.
@@PaigeMTL Pay a native or just get a friend that speaks french to read off a script or interpret for you. Do you have a Patreon? You should. If you send me the link I will become a member right now.
I don't want to share your videos because they're in English but they do a much better job at explaining why it is important than all the French videos. And it shows my friends that an anglo cares more than them so I share them videos to wake my friends up. Keep your good work.
Je pense faire une video en francais. I'm starting to feel like a coward. Of course it will be hard, and I'll look dumb, but I have to at some point right?
Ya I just went to the website and thought of what I was supposed to write and Im like "hi, I would like electoral reform.... or I dont want it? Wait... its good or bad? What does it do again?".... 😭 im dumb.
Yeah, it is a complex issue that even after a decade I still feel like I don't fully grasp. You'll want to checkout the 101 video I spend months on here: th-cam.com/video/YonZhLPROAE/w-d-xo.html
I sent an email very simple email not your overdone too long email and I was very suprised to learn that my mp has an assistant that responded confirming the reception of the email to me in a couple of minutes which is superior to my federal mp aka the now famous willy amos that never responds to me
That's awesome. I mean everyone should write their own message if they can, but that passive aggressive masterpiece is there for people who don't know what to say.
You made it so! Well it’s now all about roping more people in :) It takes years to educate people on electoral reform and get people to click on why it’s so significant even if it seems like quite a dry topic.
Are you in touch with the Mouvement Démocratie Nouvelle? You're a great speaker about this subject and they were doing a lot of public education before the pandemic hit. I don't know if that's going to continue now that it's almost certain this bill is dead but i would love to see some sort of collab between you and them!
Well, you can still ping Sonia LaBell and François Legault. But yeah, it's a funny coincidence that even in asking to change the system, you see one more example of what is annoying about the system.
Yes. It’s already happened to me once in my life. There have also been multiple referendums since I’ve lived in Canada. So we know it’s fairly common to get past this stage. Do you really think that BC, PEI and Ontario got their referendums because they let powerful people do what they want? Holding them to low standards is what makes them try this stuff in the first place.
And they all voted for the status quo... Anyway, keep up the positive attitude, we need more upbeat voices like yours for things to change for the best!
lol i tried email ms. lebel in french and modifying the email to add some spice and whatnot but i made so mane mistaaaaakes lol anyways thx for making a video abt this
