    I just buttoned up my hives for the winter. I did a mite treatment, my top deep is full of honey, and I put a 10lb sugar brick on each of um and thin reflective insulation on that and 1 inch foam board on that. Southern Ohio winters haven't been bad lately. I use a stethoscope to know where my bees are

      I'm planning to do the same... Hive/honey + candy board + moisture box + foam top insulation + cover.. I'm also considering adding 1" foam all around the hive + tar paper wrap. Cold weather is on the short horizon

    I thought I was the only one that frets over my hives during Fall and winter. My kids and now my grandkids have always been amused by me putting an ear against the back of my hives; you can tell a lot by listening to a colony.

      That’s all a part of the processes tho! It’s kind of fun to go out there in the snow and see what we can find out about how they’re doing. It’s just so nerve wracking heading into winter with those girls! But, seeing a hive come out in the spring flourishing I think is the best feeling on this planet!

      I don’t have one up yet specifically walking thru mountain camp but I explain it well in this video. This is how I’ve always applied sugar, if you were to do it mountain camp style then it would be the same process just minus the water that I add to the sugar.

    Like your video You leave you hives on the flat. I find by putting a inch and a half block under the back of the hive cause the moister at the top to run down the wall and not drip down onto the bees. It works for me. I got this idea from a beekeeper who never covers his hive during the winter.

    Two queens in fall are not so uncommon. In my language it's called "quiet change". Old one would leave hive in spring with handful of bees early or make a big swarm later.

  • @johngardner1898
    @johngardner1898 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Current best research (Randy Oliver, Fred Dunn, Seely, etc.) suggests moisture control is more important to humans vs. bees. 2-3" of good foam insulation (two boards) under the top cover with a feeding shim will retain top heat causing condensation to form on the cooler sides, not over the cluster. Tilt hive forward (as normal), so any water runs out.

    • @beefitbeekeeping
      @beefitbeekeeping  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ya know that actually make sense, I showed Kasey this. We are going to experiment with this. For hives that are on pallets..I wonder if that extra ventilation from the bottom would be helpful. But then if snow gets in it may create a mess. Hmmmmm…

    I purchased a TOPDON thermal imaging camera that connects to my phone. The FLIR has it's own battery and requires you to charge it. The TOPDON uses the actual phone for power. The Bug Farmer did a review on it if you want to see how it works. The big difference I found is the FLIR allows you to connect it to your phone even with a case due to the adjustable connector. The TOPDON connects directly to your phone if the phone does not have a case but it requires the included extension cable if you have a case (at least on my iphone with an otterbox.) They are cool tools, it's neat to see them even in the summer. Keep in mind if you have an iphone they will be changing to a USB-C in the future so if you get one with a lightning plug you'll need a small extension cord to allow it to work with a newer model phone. Thanks for sharing!

    These are called thermal imagers .
    They will get the job done . But remember they are for reading surface temperature .not inside the hive

      @handsburyhoneybees893 valid point, but could you explain why that matters? I'm interested in a longer explanation of this from you.

    • @handsburyhoneybees893
      @handsburyhoneybees893 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ a lot of people don’t even know what this piece of equipment was designed for. I’m just trying to educate them. A high in thermal imager could be from $500-$2000. I hate for anybody to spend that kind of money and be disappointed. You really can do the same thing by just putting your ear up to the colony and closing off the other ear.
      Now, if you’re going to do a bunch of cut outs you can give you a somewhat heat signature

  • @dcsblessedbees
    @dcsblessedbees 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    🤣A little, you get down right jumpy about it.😂😂
    The phone versions of the thermal cameras are cheaper, generally.
    Keep an eye out for moisture under the foam-board and the lid, then it'll freeze.

      @theterriblebeekeeper7435 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @RipRoar-ns4go it should be a supplement to their food stores some believe adding them to early can make them go through honey stores quicker and simply move up to the sugar bricks and once they do you will have to keep adding sugar bricks as they use them in the winter. Are ur hives pretty heavy currently?

      @@theterriblebeekeeper7435 Thanks TTBK7435.. I would've liked to have more honey in the stores on all my hives. That's why I'm thinking about throwing the candy boards on them now, so that they can have something extra now to prepare for the upcoming colder weather. I just wasn't sure if there were/are any downsides to adding them before it turns very cold. i'd rather get them started now and ensure they're fat and ready for winter. I appreciate your insight.
