Wow! This, for me is by far the best video you’ve ever made. I found myself constantly either agreeing with what you’re saying or being mind blown by something I hadn’t seen. The stuff about Trevor Noah’s reactions were incredible, there’s no unseeing it! This is also a great example of why you rise above your peers on TH-cam. The research you provide, the interdisciplinary knowledge you have (persuasion and communication in this case) and above all the real world experience, you’re out there practicing what you preach every day. That Steve Harvey clip was incredible!
Just one question: I love the way you handled that Apollo crowd, I watched that season of Showtime at The Apollo and noticed how performers’ demeanour towards the crowd made a huge difference. My question is, what do I do if I have nothing to compliment someone on early in the conversation. How does labeling work if there’s nothing to label? And also, is there such a thing as too much labelling? Thanks so much for this amazing video.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it. And I love that question so much.
Regarding labelling there is a method I teach in my seminars which is simply this. In most conversations our focus is inwards, how we’re coming off, what we should say, what we should do etc… by simply shifting the focus outwards, or towards the person we’re talking to, miracles can happen. I wouldn’t say keep flattering them constantly that’s really not the goal but whenever there’s an opportunity to sincerely show specific appreciation for something, take it. I’m very often saying things like “that’s a really great point” “thanks for showing me that, I can see how much work you put into it” “that’s so thoughtful of you, not everyone would do that and I appreciate it.”
Sincere, specific and personal are very key!
As for early labelling, don’t stress over it, if there’s nothing, don’t force it. The goal of labelling is not to look for things to label, it’s to point out things we appreciate when they do come up. This distinction is very important for me and makes the difference between the used car salesman vibe and authentic charisma.
I'm no expert whatsoever but in dealing with my very challenging teen I was trying to find something every day to give a compliment or positive feedback. It was often extremely difficult but I took it as a challenge to look more deeply into actions I'd think should be a given but might be something that was a stretch for them.
That’s the thing that puts people off or loses them in conversations ! If you take you out of the conversation and put them in it’s place conversations become a pleasure and interchange of thought or encouragement 😮!!
@@TheBehavioralArts and @Thomas Rios I tried challenging myself to think of what I would say to a coworker I don't like and have no respect for. I thought about their desk covered in the little trinkets they make and realized I could say something like, "You are clearly creative," motion to things on desk, "I bet we could brainstorm some interesting ways to (solve xyz problem)." No butt kissing, just open to job focused collaboration.

@@TheBehavioralArts i love this response , Spidey. It's so true sometimes we need to take focus off ourselves and put our focus outwards. This is wonderful secret for introverts !! It is helpful to take your own ego out of the picture and acknowledge the other persons contributions.

@@ivonned32 I think the real problem is that he’s not brave enough to own up to HIMSELF. I think there’s a deep-seated fear of “being his father’s son”. Will’s father had anger issues which sometimes manifested themselves through physical violence. I think that Will inherited some part of that behaviour but is disgusted by it and ashamed of it. Will hated and resented the way his father was and probably the fact that he has it in himself too. I think it just slipped out of him at the Oscars. It seems to me that instead of dealing with those impulses in a healthy manner, Will just pushed them down and bottled them up until the damn burst and the floodgates opened. Chris Rock’s joke was just the last straw. Will snapped and I don’t think he’s been able to put himself back together ever since because he’s still looking for someone else to take up the responsibility.

If he did that the night it happened…..hell even when he released his video, I think people would have forgiven and moved on. He didn’t truly own up to his actions, which says a lot.
Very guarded guy. Pretty much his entire career he was Tom Hanks-level untouchable in the likeability department. Then his bizarre marriage and family life, the affairs, etc., started coming to light. Then the slap. I'd be interested in seeing you do an analysis of his wife, and maybe her interactions with Will and their kids. What little I've been able to stomach of her "red table" show, she is incredibly domineering and Will seems almost afraid of her. The kids do, too.

I get a strange feeling regarding Tom Hanks.. When Ricky Gervais was making jokes at the golden globes regarding Hollywood and all the weird stuff they do.. Tom made strange faces, rolled his eyes and not once laughed.
@@aa.4639 Yes, I get the impression Tom's squeaky clean images is a front. For what, I don't know. He has a really wierd instagram account, or he used to, where he liked to post photos of single gloves, single shoes, etc. that supposedly he keeps finding lying around in the streets everywhere.

I’ll never get over that reaction from the audience 🙄 The same clowns who constantly lecture the masses about doing what’s right, saying no to violence & all the other cheap virtue signals they throw out, had the audacity to give that man a standing ovation after he physically assaulted a coworker. Security should have instantly escorted him out and the police called for an assault. Chris Rock had a crime committed against him on live TV before millions of witnesses, and he was completely ignored while Will Smith was celebrated.
Chris should have brought a charge against him. Everyone is afraid in Tinsel Town. If Will was a man of character he would have then went straight to his bank manager and giving Chris a few million dollars. .privately of course with a contract that he will never reveal it. Will is sick and his wife too,.... and been good with people and in front of the camera does not make you a balanced human. Will is entitled man, no matter how nice he seems or comes across. The world centres around him, hes big on the screen and he thinks hes big in real life too. . He's a manipulater... dangerous if one has power and money. Everyone is nice to him. Noone should listen to what he has to say. He's an abuser and has the entitlement to abuse someone in public. Noone is saying what they feel about him in case it rebounds on them. There is no honesty.

He would be made fun of and would lose all respect for bringing charges over a “slap”. Not to mention the power that Will Smith has in the industry.

I think the reason why will's movements seem awkward is because for the first time in his life he feels he is now an outsider, he is no longer in total control of every situation. He probably thinks every place is hostile to him. It's like how you feel when you are invited to hang out with your friends even after you talked crap about them and you know they are upset with you.
More like he does not have any control over his life anymore. He is controlled by a crazy woman day to day. He can't tell us because he is a hostage.

Being kind and accommodating is one of the best negotiation tactics to use in many disputes. It shows our humanity and what our needs are, and this often 'softens' the other party and they will respond to our vulnerability and humanity.

Chris was physically assaulted on stage while playing HOST to an event viewed by MILLIONS. He had amazing restraint both in the moment and after by not playing it out on social media. I think addressing it on his special is totally appropriate. It was definitely harsh, but Will I think should have anticipated some kinda fallout. Further, if Will is truly sorry he will let it rest. He’ll take the “high road” now, like Chris did then, and let this be the end of it.
It's not for Smith to "take the high road." How about SHOWING us how sincerely sorry he is to an ex-friend for embarrassing his ex-friend in from of millions. If Frank Bruno had been presenting and not Chris Rock, Will would NEVER have done what he did. I won't be paying money to see any of his films again....

I agree - Chris came out as the professional on that night while W.S just looked like a hurt man/boy. I don't buy his excuses either, this guy has been in the entertainment field since he was a teen, he knows the game, how to play it & what the rules are having been near the top for many years. For him to do this during a live broadcast of the biggest award shows there is for the acting fraternity & where it's the norm to expect there will be some ribbing of the individual audience members is grossly inappropriate. He seemed terrified. He was extremely guarded, verbally and physically. I think he was afraid he'd slip and say something that would make him vulnerable to public criticism, so he was tiptoeing in his head instead of freely saying what was on his mind. He got brutally dragged on social media after the Oscars. It must have really shaken him because his ego is built on his good-guy persona. I think he desperately wanted to avoid saying anything "wrong" to the point he was totally inhibited.

When my teenager is trying to manipulate me, usually because she doesn't want to take accountability of or wants to get out of something, she says, "you wouldn't understand."

Kids don’t often have the ability to manipulate. We recognize it as manipulation because we FEEL like they are. Trying understanding that maybe she really feels like you wouldn’t understand because you haven’t be able to show her that you can understand her experiences and have empathy.
I remember I often did that as a teenager and it was because I genuinely felt my parents wouldn’t understand. I was a text book neglected child so it’s not always manipulation with malicious intent
Each time I've heard Will Smith state in interviews "You never know what's going on", it is a backfire for me. It immediately takes my mind to Chris Rock. I think oh yeah? What if Chris had some major issue going on in HIS life when you slapped him? You ruined Chris's night and he'll always be the guy that Will slapped throughout his entire career. It just makes me angrier at Will. He is making an excuse and still not owning it! I'm not going to feel bad for Will. I wish he would just STOP!

He didn’t humiliate or strip Chris of his dignity instead HE SHOWED THAT CHRIS HAS THOSE QUALITIES while he himself has none.
I would not say that, I think that Chris Rock was more weirded out than hurt from Will Smith slap, and actually his reaction in the immediate aftermath showed to whole world his class and his dignity.
It’s the exact opposite. Rock showed maturity, class and dignity by immediately recognizing Smith was misdirecting rage he has over his toxic marriage. Smith destroyed his reputation and his family’s reputation and the public will never see him as a decent person again.
The only person who lost any dignity was Will Smith. Chris Rock was pure class that night.

Thank you for showing exactly why that interview felt off. I don’t think Will Smith will be able to repair his image until he gets honest with himself. I hope he’s in therapy. He also has a lot of entanglements - Jada & Will mirror each other. It’s amazing how much they try to protect themselves by using professionals, then put out an image of being people to be emulated, and still are unable to be authentic with themselves.

I think Will Smith isn't sorry for his actions that night, he seems to justify it. But, I think he is very upset about the back lash. Will is a great communicator and the "kind Sir" struck me straight away as "be kind here with this situation, you're great and let's make this so nice and easy"

I totally agree Nicola. That was my first thought - I don't think he's really sorry for what he did. I think he's sorry for loss of work or the bad press he received because of his actions. He IS a good actor and maybe he didn't have a 'script' for interviews, but I think he had possibly made notes on how to get sympathy from the crowd and answers to dodge direct questions. Maybe it is like a cookout to him, but it was a cookout attended by a world audience. He knew that getting dressed for the event, he knew that when he slapped Chris Rock, and he knew that when he 'cried' in his acceptance speech. Imho

Me and my wife’s marital problems of which many of you know got me to get up there and do as stupid as I did. This was great! My concern with the situation is that I still don't see any remorse for Chris! It's all remorse relative to the backlash Will is getting, and the lack of respect he's gained. But nowhere in there do I see remorse or sadness because of how he hurts someone else. It's more so sadness because of how it's tainted his own reputation.

Well, let’s be honest, no matter what Will Smith does or says, for the rest of his life, he’ll be known as the man who slapped Chris Rock. Will said “I flew 30 hours to be here with you.” He was indirectly saying, I went to a lot of trouble to be here, be nice to me & take me seriously. It was obvious when Will addressed Noah as ”Kind Sir” Will was planting a seed almost asking Noah to be kind and not rake him over the coals in regards to the slap and he used the word Sir to imply, I’m respecting you, so please respect me. I think every word Will said when he first sat down was 100% planned to make sure he received as little friction & embarrassment as possible.

The slap/hit wasn’t fake. Not a skit. You can tell from the way Will Smith has acted since then, and the embarrassed look in his eyes over time, that he will regret that night for the rest of his life. The whole world watched Will make the biggest mistake of his life which is kind of like punishment in itself. I’m sure Will has done a lot of soul-searching since he hit Chris and will never physically assault anyone again. You live and you learn.

As a person who has watched tones of Will Smith interviews, he says "You know" a lot. Its part of him, everytime he gives philosophical advice and sometimes even in normal conversation, its just something he does as Will Smith. He says "you know" and when you watch all his interviews, you will see him say it. You know? 😂

Yeah "I'm going through some stuff you wouldn't understand" isn't a good excuse. Even less so when you don't even clarify "the stuff" or show clear empathy about the damage you've caused. Trevor Noah should have called him out on this.

If he’s going to therapy or getting help from professionals then he doesn’t need to go into detail especially if that’s not what he’s there for and ready to unpack. I've followed him for decades and always found him to be charming, funny, and a genuinely nice guy. The Jada years, however, threw a wrench into things. I think she's an extremely problematic individual, and I have no doubt that their marriage is an unhealthy one. However, as much as I liked Will before, violence is where I draw the line. I hope he can get out of the toxic situation he's in.
Personally, I think he reacted solely in response to Jada's reaction to the joke. He initially laughed, she scowled, and he launched himself up onto the stage. I think he doesn't want to acknowledge or address that whole dynamic, and so is in 100% deflection and double-speak mode whenever that subject gets brought up.
I agree. There's something in his relationship with Jada that drive him up there. He was relaxed and laughing, while she's unhappy, and next thing you know he's charging up on stage. We know there's tense history with her infidelity that she reclassified as an "entanglement", but I definitely get the feeling she has a lot of manipulative behaviors.

It's pride. Will Smith has been soul searching through traveling and psychedelics, both of which force you to see your true self. Will knows why he hit Chris, he's done his Shadow Work. Never once has he said he had no idea what came over him. He doesn't divulge because whatever it is, its extremely private and his pride is not okay with sharing his findings. He also may be protecting face of others in his life on top of this. I'm not always okay with sharing the deepest darkest parts of myself with the one I love the most, let alone the entire world. He's giving as much info as his current level of healing allowed his ego to go. I'm still a fan. I'm only human, too.
Spidey is always on point with his analysis! Will was definitely advised on how to speak in this interview with Trevor to get it as much of a positive outcome as possible. But it’s just very hard if not impossible to teach someone to develop a new baseline.

I am shocked at how painful it is to watch Will Smith be in pain. I grew up watching his show and his movies and I love what he has created. It saddens me to see him in this much pain all the time. Even the fake laughter seems painful.

Yes, it's really sad. He did something awful, and will most likely never be able to fix his reputation. It's clear he has been through a lot, and has hurt more than a slap ever will. It's been a year, so I feel like it's time to forgive and move on. I miss the happy he has always shared with all of us.
Thank you for being one of the few who recognise this man as being a victim. He has been a victim for far too long and its going to take him a lifetime, to find who he is again, if he ever does. He may never figure out what part of the way he has acted in his life, was from himself and or the puppet he became. It has broken my heart to see and hear the way he is being talked about. Yet some of those same people saw through scamber, to see what she had done to JD. Jada is on a whole higher level of evil. I suspect the reason why Will Smith didn’t give a reason for slapping Chris Rock is he doesn’t want to throw Jada under the bus. He was initially laughing at the joke but, after seeing her rolling her eyes, he reacted and to explain that to the crowd would make people blame her and then he’d have to hear it from her when he gets home.

I've had a problem with both his talks regarding the incident, he really doesn't seem that sorry to Chris to mention he couldn't believe no one checked how he was on stage after getting slapped, why he chose to party straight after it? And I think the more worrying one for me is where does his son jaydan get the attitude of tweeting "and that's how we do it!" straight after the slap? doesn't really imply a peaceful home life or lifestyle, jeez will even having to warn jada God knows how many times to not film him at home is mad, feel so sorry for him begging his own wife for privacy in there home, something's mucked up behind closed doors.

About that face he made when he mentions the stage, I’ve caught myself doing that while I remember an unpleasant memory, or a bad behavior from my part, or a come-back that could have been better. I felt he was on that exact same feeling, it’s a very unpleasant memory for him which he has had to go through so many times and it doesn’t get better, he clearly hasn’t gotten over it, so I think that’s that.

I’ve noticed pretty much every member of the Smith family presents with a surface level charisma but no real accountability for much of anything. They all seem really self absorbed and present a carefully crafted image. They seem to be living in their private version of reality a bit.
That would be in line with narcissistic family dynamics. Kids do as they see not as they are told by others. The arrogance, entitlement, gaslighting and never taking accountability will have been taught via the narcissistic mother and codependent doormat will. Will Smith just lost all my respect for him, he enables an abuser and abused a comedian and took no accountability with no genuine, authentic shame or regard for what he did. He embarrassed himself more by hitting Chris now continues to be a pathetic ass hole about it. Actors, practised liars.

I'm in no way a behavior specialist, but I am a communications professor. No matter how communicative we perceive a person to be, sometimes it's a lack of vocabulary. Not that he didn't think he did anything horrific. In many instances people believe they have communicated a thought effectively when they have not. The same goes for his use of the words complex and nuanced. It's something to consider.

Biggest thing I take from it is that people have an unfulfilled desire to watch others suffer. He messed up, has been punished by the academy, gave his little apology. There is NO reason that this many people should still be this concerned over a slap this long after it happened.
I’m not defending him, I think it was a coward move because I can guarantee that nothing would have happened if it was The Rock telling that same joke, but a slap is so insignificant in my day to day life. I do believe that he was embarrassed after the whole “entanglement” drama and that joke was the straw that broke the camels back, but I also believe that people should get a life and let these people live theirs.

My impression here is that Will Smith was trying to get back to what he was in most people's eyes before the Oscars incident. He's trying to use humor and his personal charisma to be the charming, likeable Will Smith that people knew (or thought they did) and loved. He understands, or at least believes, the only way through this is for him is to brazen it out. Whether that works for you is going to depend, in large part, on whether or not you see it as an attempt to avoid responsibility for his actions. "There's many nuances and complexities to it..." If your attitude is, "No, there's not. You physically assaulted another person for no good reason. Period," then you're not going to be impressed. The truth is, all he really had to say was, "I'm so sorry, that was wrong of me and I know it, that should never have happened." A sincere apology cuts a LOT of ice with people. But he doesn't apologize, because the truth is, he's not sorry. He still feels justified. On a positive note, we can say that at least he's not lying about it. He's not offering an insincere apology.
Trevor Noah, with his "Part of me..." commentary, I think was, very kindly, trying to guide Will Smith toward an admission of wrongdoing, and an apology, that he knew would actually play well with people. It didn't work. The overwhelming sense I got of Trevor's attitude in this clip was *disappointment*. He's seeing that this man he previously admired is not who he thought he was. Will Smith is not a stand-up guy who takes responsibility for his actions. And that saddens Trevor.

From what I’ve gathered of their relationship and my own experiences I feel like Jada fueled a lot of what happened that night… I feel like there’s a lot that goes on behind closed doors in their relationship and Will is trying his best not to fall apart at the seams. It may be why he is being so vague about his apology. He was not himself that night at all and to me it felt like if he didn’t react in a way jada “expected” that there would’ve been hell to pay when they got home. Whether it be more spiteful vindictive adultery from her or just an all out rage war.. these last few years I’ve seen Will struggling on the inside and it breaks my heart genuinely. I know the feelings he’s feeling and it can lead people to do things COMPLETELY out of character. It’s so subtle that most people don’t see it at all.. reasons why toxic relationships can go unnoticed for so long.. It’s not an excuse it’s just a reality of what toxic relationships can do to people.. and until you’ve been there you really have no clue what people in these situations go through. I feel for Will and I hope he can pull through for his own sanity.
While men may act like fools for the love of a woman, the only one responsible for such foolishness is that foolish man who stays to be made a fool of over and over and over again. I understand that leaving is not easy but that's only one option. Don't take sh>t from no one and no one will give you sh>t. Clearly Will thinks that taking sh>t from Jada is a good strategy. Trevor Noah protected Will Smith throughout this interview. I'm not sure if it's purely for PR like you mentioned could be a possibility, but I do wonder how much about the context of Smith's circumstances Noah is privy to. It makes the, "you know," even harder to swallow because I'm not sure even Noah knows. You pulled the perfect moment out when Noah was very quiet and blinking like a strobe light.
It is clear there were moments when Noah asked for what I think could have been relatable elaboration, like the nephew story. Smith had already been trying to gain sympathy using very weak and inauthentic tactics, so Noah was attempting to give him an authentic moment. This story feels off to me. Either Smith doesn't want the audience knowing his response to his nephew or it never happened.
Despite Noah's efforts, I think Smith blows this opportunity to take accountability. That moment of disgust, I think, comes from the fall out of the action and not the action itself.
I wonder what the history is between Chris Rock and Will Smith and/or Jada Pinkett Smith.
I think you had broken down a clip following her "entanglement," which made many people, including me, suspect she emotionally abused him.
Are Will Smith's behaviors a sign of long-term psychological abuse by his wife? If a woman dehumanizes a man, tells him he's less of a man repeatedly for years, might he assert himself physically against another man to prove to her that his "manhood" is intact? What a mess.

Good point.. if he’s actually been emotionally abused/degraded, him saying that his emotions got the best of him and owning up to that, would also mean him saying something against his abusive wife publicly, admitting that he wasn’t okay with it, admitting weakness, and admitting that he’s been faking being okay with the “entanglements” and everything else. He’d be admitting something a lot deeper and more vulnerable about himself and his circumstances.. so it’s easier to hide the truth from yourself and dance around the issue. Kind of sad really.
Yes, the Oscars might not be as big a deal for Will as for us watching, but THIS Oscars he was up for a major award. To Will it was just as big deal as it was for those watching. This was no cookout!

I think for a large number of Americans, me being one of them, the Oscars are of zero importance, so I am pretty sure they are a much bigger deal to Will than many of us. Because of Will’s slap that is the first Oscar in 20 years that I know anything about what happened other than occasional hearing what movie won best picture.

You know, I was thinking about that and I thought - yes that is respectful but also cultural. I'm from the UK and I don't think that's the way we really do things, I think it's very American (ie as a continent not just the US). This is really interesting. I am less likely to believe an apology made straight away. It would be empty and just a manipulation tactic to maintain someone's reputation. I’ve always liked Will Smith. The way I saw the whole Oscar debacle was he was laughing, then he saw Jada’s face. Then he reacted. It seems to me she has some kind of control over him. He wants to please her so badly and she just dismisses every effort he makes. She enjoys making him feel ill at ease. It’s like he felt he had to do some gallant gesture just to get her to notice him, but nothing works. I honestly think for his own mental health he needs to leave. She is a tormentor.

Great video!! I was messing around with Chat GPT while watching this video and decided to ask the A.I. about this Will Smith situation and the answer really says it all. The A.I. program isn't aware of events after 2021 so I asked it in this way and the response says IT ALL 😂:

Sadly, that often happens when people throw money and adoration at you. Trevor Noah is a soft and easy interview and tries to get Will to make sense of what happened for Will’s sake, but just can’t lead him there. He also tries to soften the severity of what Will did by the “cook out” comment. I’m sorry, but I have gone to church every Sunday since I was born. No matter how “familiar” people become with taking the Sacrament, it does not become a “cook-out” with friends. Certain things have meaning and are sacred. If these celebrities want to continue to be worshipped, they will have to treat these events with the respect and reverence they want us to believe they deserve.

@@anamatovic5719: Like the US, people from different parts of Canada have different accents. Sometimes the accents are subtle, but there if you listen carefully. My husband's family in Alberta speak slightly different than my family in BC. Not something most people will notice, but it's there in the speech pattern and accent.

I absolutely loved this analysis. I was watching with my husband and found myself guessing all the behaviors right before you would state them. Kind of pop quizzing myself on what I've learned so far. 😆 It jumped out at me after a few of my guesses that I have indeed learned so much from you in the short time I've been watching, it's shocking. On top of the knowledge you share with us, you're so kind and caring and I feel like you share that with us as well. Look at Trevor from 28:16 as Will turns to the audience and begins his "you never know what someone is going through" speech. Just like Will is an effective communicator, Trevor is a great listener..
Look at Trevor's face! He knows we are being "conned" by Will. And like you say, I don't know if Will is being purposeful, but he has not come to grips with what he has done to Chris, and so he is still doing his "Will Smith show". The audience also seems super quiet and I think they realize that Will is not being honest with them or himself.
