Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Oshii are old friends (1983~), and they have been compared with each other well.
"Hayao Miyazaki's movie is a movie that 100 people watch once,
Mamoru Oshii's movie is a movie that one person views 100 times."

Honesty I feel like I could watch both Oshii and Miyazaki's movies until the end of time. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle I've watched like 50 times each, and Angel's Egg and The Sky Crawlers literally think about every single day.

I was amazed when Oshii answered my question and the amount of detail he gave to go with it. Still one of my favorite directors!

His more well known films are quite serious in tone, but Oshii has directed a number of humorous anime like Urusei Yatsura, the Patlabor TV series and the short lived Gosenzo-sama Banbanzai. He’s honestly really great at directing comedy

His works always make me go: wait, when was this made? They all seemed way too technically advance for their time. His mastery of the medium was such that I am convinced he single-handedly spawned Japanese culture of the 90s. I don't think any the major 90s Japanese works quite escape his influence and vision, whether it's Patlabor and ultimately, Ghost in the Shell, his success seeped in and to me, defined what's "Japanese" of the 90s: Dark, moody, edgy in a decaying, dusty and isolated way, his works screams 90s Japan without making a loud sound, just echoes of said voice bouncing off distant concrete walls. Modern Japanese creative industry sorely miss someone like him.
