the lowest turnout in the last 100 years was half way through the last Labour government, when everyone thought it was a foregone conclusion that Labour would win again ... they did, still with a large majority, but less so - and at the next election the turnout went up ...

That’s why I like Australia’s compulsory voting (technically compulsory showing up at a voting office and ticking your name off a list). It also means that it doesn’t profit the government to make it harder for certain people to vote because, hey, they have to vote anyway so all you’ll be doing is annoying the voters.

Probably right but it’s difficult to want to pick which guy in the firing squad is going to drive the bullet into you. So most just close their eyes and expect the worse regardless of what colour tie the morons are wearing. I guess decades of relentless incompetence in the HoP does that to a population.

The average Tory MP, if such a thing exists, is actually quite a good constituency MP, just like the average MP of any party. There are some high-profile disaster cases but those are in the minority. So people need to look at their voting record and see if this is agreeable, in addition to whether they like their local work.

Sunak has been the Prime Minister for year. If he had the political skill to turn things around, we would have seen some of it by now. Instead of addressing the problems that voters care about, he was rambling about boats and trying to hold the party together. Nobody in their right mind would actually believe that the tories care about the enviroment. Moreover, a party that claims to be competent in terms of economics wouldn't raise trade barriers to their biggest trading partner and spooking investors by a horrendous "mini" budget.
I'm not a Brit but a close observer of British politics. Sunak is desperate and trying to limit the damage at the next election. They're gonna lose. The question is how bad it's gonna be.

So most of the provisions of FTPA are still there, it's just that the power of calling the election moved back to the PM.

However, the government can call early elections if they want to, so we end up with elections more often than the United States a lot of the time. Currently, it's been under 4 years since the last one (so more recent than yours), and the elections before that were 2 years apart each. It just seems like we never have elections because 1) our elections don't get much coverage in the US and 2) the last few years have felt very long.

Because the only mechanisms to do so involve either the King entering politics, which would result in there no longer being a King, or the MPs passing a no confidence motion, which requires a majority, and because being the government also requires a majority, a number of the MPs in the government party would have to vote against their own party. The only other option would be referenda, but it'd probably take some kind of no confidence motion to start a referendum, and at that point the MPs could just vote the government out anyway. Sunak is extrapolating too much from one data source, that one bye-election in London...

By the end of the year means give or take 9 weeks (45 business days) to arrange the poll, assuming the last two weeks are off limit due to holidays. Is that really credible?

Let's get one thing straight....the British population DID NOT vote for Boris....the conservative party did. The same way the British public DID NOT vote for Brexit, the merely took part in a poll which is not a vote and doesn't have to be upheld, but Camerons ego caused him to tell everyone that he would uphold the outcome because he believed the poll would be in favour of staying.

Since there is no fixed time for an election and the PM can call an election any time at his discretion, when he does call an election is it still called a snap election?

Doesn't matter if it's tory or labour they both have the same end goal they just disagree on the speed of which it will be reached.

    God… imagine missing Boris.
As much of an absolute tosswollop he was, at least he was making some effort to protect the environment.
Sunak will even sell that if it gets him 5 votes….

There should of been a general election called when liz truss resigned in disgrace last year. I would take one tomorrow.
