  • "Tell me about a time you failed." is easily one of the most dreaded medical school interview questions. Who wants to take about when they failed?
If you're like most medical school applicants, you're probably worried about saying something that will be viewed as an automatic red flag. You don't want that failure moment to color everything else you say during your interview.
In this video, we'll discuss how to gracefully discuss a time you failed and how to communicate the lesson you learned to impress med school adcoms.

    Who we are:
Shemmassian Academic Consulting (SAC) was founded by Dr. Shirag Shemmassian, a medical school admissions expert with nearly 20 years of experience helping thousands of students get into top programs such as Harvard, Mayo, and UCSF. Despite a roughly 40% medical school matriculation rate nationally, the SAC team’s approach has helped over 90% of their students get into med school-the first time they apply. SAC has been featured on The Washington Post, US News and World Report, and NBC.

Thank you for all the content and resources you provide! They have been extremely valuable to me during this application cycle. In regards to failure being subjective, can I talk about a personal failure, such as feeling like a failure to my own culture (an insecurity I felt when I was young not feeling "hispanic enough")?

I know I have failed in the past but I just can't think of any good examples. Really struggling

Jordan wasn't cut from the team, just placed in JV to get better. But the analogy is still true. 👌

Hi! If I am re-applying to medical school, should I mention not being accepted the first round as a failure? I learned a lot from the experience and it helped me grow as a person/applicant, but I am not sure if it's more of a bad thing to mention rather than a good example. Thanks!

Here in med school @49. Fail 2 classes, in which I have to repeat. Let this sink in. The algorithms is scary on the internet 😮. Any advice❓️

Thank you for the tips! Would you recommend staying away from academic failure such as receiving a D in a class and having to retake it?

Depends on the specific circumstances and the lessons gleaned.

Hello, thank you for this video. I have a question for you, but I don't know how to contact you. Well, the question is; I am an international student (premed) and I will be visiting my country this summer. I was thinking of shadowing a doctor/volunteering there. Is there a way I can do that so that medical schools will look at it as something because I know they can be skeptical of international experiences.

Hello Shammah! So long as you also receive shadowing experiences in the US, it'll be fine. Moreover, you will have an opportunity to contrast your experiences across countries, discuss cultural competence, etc.

If you failed in human interactions, how does researching psychology to understand it sound?
Too much of a red flag?

It's always great to bolster weak areas, especially if you have an interest in those areas. Just make sure not to do it for the sole purpose of addressing a problem
