The video is still monetized! 👍 Here's a couple of updates/corrections: 1. I'm well aware "hentai" is only used in the West to describe Japanese-created adult works. When I said "no English equivalent to hentai" I meant a word to describe Western-created adult works, not an English word to describe adult works in general. 2. The original creator of the first Ankha animation was minus8, and ZONE's work was based off of that. However, minus8 had a lot of complicated stuff happen to them, and I wasn't sure if they'd even want me to talk about them publicly, so I didn't mention them. 3. The admin of the Paheal website reached out to me, to solve the mystery of where the site's name came from! According to their email "The name "Paheal" came from a tshirt my friend was wearing the day I registered the domain. The shirt had some mage guy from Ragnarok online next to the word "Pa-Heal" which apparently means "Heal, please!" in Tagalog." I have a screenshot of the full email up on twitter if you want to read it: twitter.com/lextorias/status/1750052996069867656
Anyone who didn't get the first point, it's their bad. I read the comment before the point in the video and was expecting something more WAY more vague.
I always pronounced Paheal in my head as "pa-HEAL" with the second syllable stressed. Hearing the first syllable stressed, like it's "PAW heal" sounds so weird to me lol
man, i sincerily just clicked on your vid just to see your opinion quickly and then jump to another ytube video, but here i am congratulating you for that amazing work, i've never saw such charisma, interest and dedication on really making an interesting content, you've won not only a like but an active subscriber
My favorite Overwatch porn moment was when Blizzard went "We encrypted the models for our Overwatch 2 characters! Let's see you try and use them to make porn now!", only for the encryption to be cracked the next day or so.
If there’s one way to get the internet to break your encryption so they don’t make porn of your characters, it’s by taunting them that they can’t do it
The "PM Tom" thing is no joke. I once PMed him for a very specific problem I was having, and he replied to me within a day saying he'd fixed it for me. This guy's an absolute legend.
lol when I was about 12 I PMed Tom asking him how he made the website and he really did respond to me not too long after. Young me was surprised because I didn’t really expect a response.
I remember the b j game in anime style art (of course) where you are a college girl and to pay for tuition you apply in a glory hole club for quick buck and you have to service men and theirs come out of hole in different, shapes and sizes and if you really good you become famous get more patrons and money. I forgot the name but maybe someone can remind us here. 😂😂😂😂😂
@@jerry12314For me it was the Tarzan porn animation (or was it a game?) that was my first interaction with Newgrounds. I was 8 at the time. That was around the time Johnny Rocketfingers had just released.
I remember i used to browse Newgrounds a lot with a friend back in the day as kids. He once dared me to click into the mature section. Trying to be edgy, and thinking we'd find very violent and/or gory animations, i clicked on it. My life changed forever after that.
The fact that i knew all the female Overwatch characters and their names without ever playing the game says something about its legacy regarding adult media.
This is, actually, unironically, really great Internet history. Like, you're really rolling the dice on this even with the censorship. So, thanks for sharing this
TH-cam really doesn't like the comments section of this video. 😂 Comments are getting deleted left and right just because people are trying to discuss "adult art".
Thanks so much for covering this subject in such an impartial and informative manner! I'm sure people will be referencing your video for many years to come. Ever since my mom accidentally rented me Urotsukidoji instead of Urusei Yatsura when I was way too young, I've never been the same. I have the letters that Nintendo sent me back in 2003 to demand I stop drawing Pokemon porn to prove it ;)
Fancy seeing you pop up. And to think, it's people like you who make me wish I'd not given up on grad school for psychology. For every 10000 soccer mom's frustrated with their husband's obsession with lawn care, sans innuendo, there's one like you. Thanks for being weird.
41:33 A note about Gfycat, they didn't technically wipe it, they split the website off into a subsidiary called "Redgifs" and transferred identified NSFW content over to those servers. They shortly after sold Redgifs to a new owner since I guess they didn't want to manage what was essentially a porn website, and now Gfycat has been shut down but Redgifs lives on haha
The funny thing is, while most people remember Shadman's unhinged Guro phase (early on), his way too long Loli phase, or his obsession with farts in general (plus stuff made by others, but hosted by Shad for a long time, like the weird stuff JLullaby made), Shad is actually a quite talented artist when he puts his mind on it.
@@LordNecronthe scariest thing is that most of the most talented artists were motivated to get that good because of their specific & widely taboo fetishes.
@@CaptainCFalcon kinda like how Stanley Kubrick may have been one of the world's best filmmakers in history, but he frequently abused his cast and crew to achieve the perfection he chased.
Shoutout to creators who actually put some characterization and progression through several scenes in the work rather then just flooding the tags with 10sec humping loops.
An important thing to know about Metadata is that it isn't just Canadian, it was made by the Canadian government. It was made by the National Film Board using a computer owned by the National Research Council.
That really isn't important. It is important to actually understand WHAT Metadata is. If you walk into a Public Library (or any Library) you can see a physical representation - Categorizing books under Author, and Genre. The difference with a digital database - especially a relational database, you can arbitrarily re-arrange everything based on well... information about it. So - why do we want metadata? Because it ultimately enables us to understand relationships of content created. It allows us to easily process data in all kinds of ways while linking the old and new (ex. Creating a thumbnail version, or creating a water marked version, and making it easy to serve the relevant one). So while Author + Genre is about the extent at which you can go within a physical library. Within digital? Aspect Ration, Resolution, Photo types, and more are all useful. We can use keyword tagging as well. By the time we get through every way we can categorize data we end up with the comprehensive list of what can be metadata. In many ways - being able to look up a film based on the actors in it is a result of Metadata and relational databases. So it doesn't matter really who created it: Odds are plenty of entities were doing something similar. Because it's actually useful. The one thing that LITERALLY EVERYONE NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND THOUGH IS: Metadata is DATA.
One thing I will say is that a lot of NSFW content creators ended up contributing to the Blender scene in many ways, such as bug reports, addons, suggestions and even code PRs. In fact, there's even a famous NSFW artist named Mets that was hired and is still to this day working to Blender Corporation, if I'm not mistaken he's the main guy behind CloudRig, he's still active in NSFW communities like Smutbase every now and then, along with other Blender employees as well. Some Blender addons made by people in the NSFW community that I know of are: Simplicage, Bonedynamics, Fluid Painter, MustardSimplify & MustardUi, etc. No breakthrough to be found here, although it's definitely a really big use of Blender
@@willyeeton4390 It originally was a NSFW free addon that was used exactly for what you're thinking lol Free NSFW version still exists, but the guy made a paid SFW version with normal fluids like ketchup, chocolate topping and other food stuff. Seems to be doing well on Blender Market
But NSFW art has also contributed to a lot of problematic depictions of underage characters, sexual assault etc. It also feeds into this very perverse need to sexualize everything especially in genres like anime.
This was a fantastic video! The instant you mentioned Tijuana Bibles, I knew that you were absolutely taking this subject seriously. I make adult games, and it breaks my heart to see the way that wonderful work by my peers can just get wiped away from the internet at a moment's notice. Thank you for the warm and unflinching respect you showed the subject matter and the artists you discussed!
@@LeonelLAURE Nintendo took down Rom sites. Took Dolphin off Steam. Hates mods. For a long time they would copyright strike any gameplay videos on TH-cam if the youtuber didn't have permission from Nintendo IIRC, they forbid some fan event related to video games from happening and boy Nintendo has done a lot of other asshole things that I don't know about/don't remmeber
Whenever someone tells you no Nintendo game was intended to be s3xulised. Don't forget that Miyamoto TOLD rare to make that blue fox more sexy and the creator of the animal crossing games wanted them to be far more adult than what was allowed (It's why villagers could be very flirtatious and even horny with others in the first game). The history of which is fascinating.
37:29 I love the odd word choice in "whoever is doing the Elizabeth porn on deviantart, please stop it", which makes it sound like there's a single mysterious artist who never sleeps and is just drawing 24/7, somehow singlehandedly flooding DeviantArt with porn. No one knows who they are and we're powerless to stop them. We had such a wholesome and upstanding Christian internet until that person came along... 😔
One of the main reasons I haven’t quit twitter yet is because it’s one of the few social media sites where NSFW media can be freely posted. Not even just r34, if your interests are explicit in any way, it feels like you’re forced to use twitter, risk being banned constantly, or find a subreddit which god knows I’m not doing.
Isn't this like the point of 4chan though? I honestly can't fathom why anyone would post NSFW on normal social media. Then again, I've never understood twitter either.
had to go tab over to patreon to give this one a proper watch and i'm glad i did! thought you deserved more than just $1 for your effort, so here's this :) this is really important history and i'm glad it's being documented one way or another!! always love your content! keep up the good work!
Well, I got to this video through reccomendations so whatever things TH-cam might usually do to supress a video like this clearly aren't working. Amazing work by the way. Just subscribed.
honestly, lexitorias' self-censorship skills are top-notch. or rather, filter-avoidance strategies. he could legit do a follow-up video on what his exact focuses were on when editing stuff out.
I was recently shocked to learn that the R34 character "Elizabeth" became so popular that she got her own $100M video game. Though it's weird that they slimmed her down so much and got rid of the other thing.
I remember an Economist article from the early 2010s that compared vintage vs modern adult content to steak vs crisps. Can't directly quote, but there was a line about "Now you can just have one after another."
@@InservioLetum Crisps. They were saying adult content used to be more rare, like a pinup or a VHS tape you have to go out and buy. Requiring more effort like a steak. But the quote was saying that with the advent of the internet, you can simply log on, google a phrase, and suddenly find yourself with an entire assortment of adult content at your fingertips. Like opening a bag of crisps.
About the only person I've seen making a 1-hour video out of curiosity after encountering a tweet (or in this case, somewhat of a trend). Both your research and writing abilities seem to be levelling up as time goes on. Congrats on the well-done job.
Fun fact: tody fox told artists to make corn of his characters to boost awaerness of his game. This was at the point were undertale was not well known. For deltarune, he commisioned a character that was designed pretty explicitly to draw attention away from r34 of the main characters. Tasq manager, a dominatrix, cat, robot thing completly failed to do that, as the main characters, expesally raslei, got considerably more. Lesson of the story, carful what you wish for.
@@Alias_Anybody that was more true earlier on. Animal crossing got a lot of adult art because the entire point of the game was to bond earnestly with them and they already could flirt with you. But now R34 artists like more characters that have strong derivatives to conventional concepts that they can mass market + their popularity. What they are as a character, rather than the integrity of the media they belong to.
One of the most important but often overlooked rule34 artists you missed, Minus8, actually made the Ankha animation you mentioned originally, then Zone remade their work. It was fine for them to do so, and both artists are awesome, it's just a shame to only mention Zone when Minus8 was also pivotal especially in that particular work and in music themed rule34 in general.
minus8 was in the original version of my script for this video, but with everything that's happened to them online I didn't quite know how to talk about them
@@Lextorias I didn't know what happened and hs, that is complicated. I think the best would've been to just say that Zone remade it without saying the original creator
Fun furry fact: the first image on e621 is image 13 as 1-12 were test images and removed from the site Great work on researching obscure stuff I didn't know I wanted to know about.
I'm surprised there was no mention of VanRipper and Helltaker, the guy who wanted to see more hot demon girls in suits, so he made a game and encouraged people to draw r34 of them.
I think the appreciation for r34 is pretty clear by the types of characters that are often most popular. Quite of few of the personas in the persona series are hyper sexulised, yet they dont get the same attention as the main casts. A lot of that is popularity, but I think that people find it satisfying to see characters in vastly different interpretations while retaining their derivative characteristics. It's exactly because those expressions are so different from their base derivatives, that when an artist can still make it transformative of that character's personality, aesthetics, and characteristics, it gives a greater appreciation for those traits that establish them.
That's basically canaryprimary with aggretsuko for me. They did a way better interpretation of haida's love interests than the show. Sometimes r34 cam show a better interpretation all together.
@@joebest6582 Absolutely. Despite the lewd nature of the animation, some of it - especially the more recent Aggretsuko one - doesn't immediately go straight into the action. It's slow burning, and it honestly shows the relationship between Haida and Fenneko.
@@vikingzeroone9647interesting. Iv also seen alot of backlash of certain characters being lewded like the lady from the show "frienan"? Never seen it but apparently wholesome characters like that getting lewded sparks alot of rage, the response is generally, well don't look, its not for you. Outside of age, do you think every character is free game or are there untouchables
@@justafan-tn4ny Personally, I don't mind it, but I tolerate it in a way like a spectrum - which is to say 90% of the spectrum is all okay with the lewd crap. The only thing I don't like is artists drawing actual people and putting them in sensual situations (I'm looking at you Shad) or de-aging them (again, looking at you Shad, especially with the Keemstar thing. If you know, you know). Apart from that, everything else is free game.
I started watching this video because haha funny prawn video, but this was a genuinely interesting, well researched, thoughtful look into something that could be considered its own art movement that gets swept under the rug because people are afraid of what the cultural Zeitgeist will think of them, of how others will perceive them even though everyone, yes, literally everyone, has seen smut at some point.
One of the things that makes Rule34 so interesting is how easy it is to get into. Can you write? Got a cheap drawing tablet? Can your PC run Source? Congrats! You're halfway there! It's why Rule 34 is Rule 34, hell it's why fan content is so important. If you love a character or a ship, or disagree with their interpretation in material, or there's not enough of what you want, there is enough documentation, tutorials and free material for you to make it. And chances are good that there'll be fans to watch and bankroll it.
This video is so well made, subject matter aside. Well-researched, well-written, well-formatted. I never checked how much longer was left in the video. Very excellent job, subscribing specifically for this one
An interesting point about the removed victory pose for tracer is, as Dan from NewFramePlus talked about, it wasn't necessarily removed for being "too sexual" rather than that sexuality being out of character for tracer (with widow actually keeping a similar pose with it being in character). This kinda adds to your point about a character being more popular when actually defined and formed.
That kinda makes sense, but then Blizzard (in their infinite indie company wisdom) just slaps an ass and a massive rack on any female character they put into Overwatch you know there was porn of Ashe before Blizzcon was over for a reason I'm quite sure some of this problem can be traced to the independent lads exaggerrating and, frankly, _inflating_ the attention to the...assets (and the assets themselves), but come on Blizzard, why make skins that are in the game explicitly and only for fan service? at least you can get some damn fine milk over there
@@The-jy3yq Uhh... You must be thinking of a very different Blizzard, the Blizzard that exists in reality replaces women with bowls of fruit and hasn't put a rack of anything on anyone for more than a decade at this point.
Found this video from a twitter post mocking it, saying they're not spending an hour to watch the history of gooning on the internet. Having spent an hour watching the history of gooning on the internet, gotta say this is pretty great.
Pyro's popularity is actually very easy to explain imo - they're the only not explicitly male (bc you can't see their face, body and their voice is distorted) playable character in a very popular game and also mask/latex fetishism.
R34 has always been at the forefront of artistic innovation. I remember back in the very early flash days on newgrounds, they always looked over smoothed, like they were running at 64fps. That kind of animation looks really out of place in almost all situations but in the use of s3xual acts. The fluidity, rhythm and smoothness of character actions in those types of animations worked flawlessly. When artists like minus8 and zone started using them for their r34 animations, no one had seen anything quite like it, and it became viral as a result. S3xual art in general is a great way to use artistic techniques that are otherwise underdeveloped in other mediums.
And those skills can pay dividends with safe for work art. If you can animate sex, it's safe to say you can animate fights. Like, look at Balek for instance, who got gigs working with animation companies even while doing pron on the side
@0uttaS1TE that's true. There is a lot of overlap with weighting, tension, releasing, escalation (literally climaxing) between the two. They just highlight those artistic concepts with different framing. Maybe that's partly why fighting games are so horny.
And going back (given that I'm in the first 5 minutes of the video) old Japanese prints had to use tentacles in place of "D!ks" because lewd laws forbade actual "pronz". A law that still exists in Japan today and hence why blurring happens. That law has yet to be repealed. I'm guessing Lex goes into this detail in the vid but I couldn't wait to comment.
Dawg he literally just explained that adult art is a byproduct of digital innovation *not* the other way around _explained in detail by the artists themselves_ Now maybe you are trying to say that adult art and a desire to create more and more niche and esoteric porn popularized and made professional techniques more ubiquitous? Sure. Yeah. But anything you’ve seen a porn artist do I 100% guarantee they got from a non-porn professional. Otherwise they would just be doing that to make money professionally.
"Why is it always The Pyro?" I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess: 1) the popularity of gimp suits and latex as fetishes 2) A faceless character is better for projecting onto? 3) All else failing it's funny

Derpexion is such an insane artist, it's wild to me that she makes studio quality animations herself. It's so insane that I can't look at any lewd images or models without immediately thinking about how insanely talented she is, and immediately wanting to improve my own ability to animate. The moment I see it, I immediately get home, up from bed, or whatever I'm doing to open up blender, and get to practicing..... Though I am a 3d animator (No, I don't make pron. This was really well put together, the respectful way you talk about the medium is 👌, really enjoyed the R34 timeline, was great! and reaching to the OG animators was such a nice cherry on the cake, and oh how I was waiting for you to bring up Overwatch and the well deserved NIER/Yokotoaro namedrop
And it's deserved, not only because 2B's ass (where is A2 in this, come on), it's story and philosophical themes leave you thinking about it way after playing it, Drakengard also does this, but like, for the opposite
Uh. No. Nier Automata was a fucking fun game with great music, visuals and combat. That's the reason BEHIND the popularity of 2B porn. There's plenty of crappy games out there with cool character designs that nobody will ever make porn of because they're just shit games that nobody wants to play. Your post makes zero sense and is extremely condescending to the work of hundreds of people who worked on one of the best games of that generation.
I actually watched Fritz the Cat with my grandma one Saturday night. It was...quite the experience. For context, it was my grandma's idea to watch it, since she was around when it came out. Wild times.
Also, a small mention to minus8, the flash artist who made the original ankha dance video that Zone made a tribute to, who also made one of the most popular templates for those types of games, an animated character you could choose their position, amount of clothing and speed and also created the genderbent versions of mario enemies, like the shygal
Great video, YT surprisingly recommended it and I've never seen one of your videos before. I'm glad you've made this piece, and if this video can be preserved, future historians will be glad yo have at least this to go off of. It's amazing how much history might get buried because of the general shame around such content even though as seen here, it is just as much a part of history as everything else. Truly all knowledge should be preserved and I know I'll start doing my part to help preserve all that hot, nasty, freak-*ss knowledge.
Finally someone who thinks like me, you have no idea how much archiving over the years ive done on Rule 34 sites to make sure people's art is archived, the sad fact is a lot of good art is being buried under AI art which is really really disappointing The reason I started doing it was because of places like Tumblr nuking art, hundreds of thousands of artworks where lost and then also when a good friend of mine died i realised a lot of their artworks where not available anymore online so I've been archiving them as well
Someone's gotta do the same with music. Just incase main servers go down from who knows what. That's why I like dvd, VHS, cassettes. The whole shabang. Kinda cool someone's doing it with the sexy stuff. You go man, hope your friend had fun and enjoyed as much as he could.
@@FoxySpartan117 I completely agree, physical media is always important as well as having a real place to put older content, if companies weren't so anti-consumer we would have had something like that already
That goddamn tweet has stuck with me for literal years now. It's so cool that such a funny little observation had an impact on someone like you to the point of basing a video around it. Coming from already loving your vids, I can't wait to give this a full watch!
The artists you interviewed brought up such a good point about the tech already being there, and it made me immediately think that perhaps viewers were just conflating individuals' artistic progress to the progress of the medium as a whole. Because of course individual artists are going to get better the more they get familiar with a tool, and Rule 34 in particular addresses a lot of subjects that are REALLY DIFFICULT to animate convincingly in 3D, so it's a bit of a trial by fire. That will lead to a lot of really innovative uses of existing tech that might make it look like the industry as a whole is growing in stride, but really it's just a lot of really talented folks learning and growing together. Which is just really interesting to me, honestly.
54:43 It's not just adult content. In this day and age, people assume that all of history will be written down, archived properly, and easily accessible. But most history is lost to time: especially so for this topic.
This right here is excellent work. It's the kind of thing that I got recommended and thought "oh that's funny lol" but then sat down and watched something more informative and entertaining than I thought possible. Seriously, you deliver what you've got to say very well and you get your emotions, ideas, and information across in a way that's making me think and laugh my ass off in the same second. Keep doing this; thank you for sharing your work and highlighting the works of others.
There was a rumour that one of the remastered pokemon games (i think ogmega saphia) was blamed for having too little r34 for it underperforming. Indeed pokecorn used to be quite underground and was more of a novalty than aything else. Now lucario has the most r34 of any nintendo character to ever exist, and depending on the metrics you use, the most of any character peroid. Wild stuff.
Your research on this topic kind of proves a thing I've been worried about for a long time... death of the Internet. It takes money to maintain servers, copyright strikes exist, people who own content simply die and there may be no one to keep their legacy. If content doesn't generate money, it'll disappear. And the more content gets created, the more content will disappear.
There are two paths we can take, and I think we should take both. One is make more of an effort to preserve the content posted on the internet, at least the most influential ones. The other is to accept the fact that a lot of things just disappear to time and we can't get them back. The biggest example being all those extinct animals that were never fossilized or preserved.
As a NSFW artist, genuinely, thank you for making this video, so much of this shit is buried and as someone who worked as a "Post master" for quite a few artists. (That being that I schedule posts and did analytics for artists wanting to increase their following. Which I don't do anymore cause I want to peruse my own work.) A lot of this history is lost in a sense because as you said, the platforms and spaces are growing smaller every year, X (Formally twitter), has been the only good high end staying ground for NSFW artist to get a foot hold and start off without being caved in by others in their field. It's rough out there and the motivations to want to make art are so vast and genuinely interesting that writing something down should be some of our priorities, I know I've turned into a bit of an archiver in recent years as I want to try and preserve some history for those who are interested enough to want to know about how some of these things came to be.
I'm genuinely surprised you didn't touch on MMD in your Rule 34 history; I'd love a video exploring its history and more. Not just that, but AI-generated artwork, while potentially untouched by human hands, has gained immense popularity. It's practically ubiquitous on major social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
Most AI generated porn is made using garbage, cobbled together unlicensed training data for their models. It only takes a few anime pics until you find one that mysteriously has mosaic-like artifacts in the nether regions to suggest that they could be using swathes of unlicensed doujinshi as their training data. You wouldn't be getting those artifacts otherwise, as you would 100% receive un-censored images if the works were actually licensed, so it's quite obvious that they just dunked the entirety of that e-hentai backup that was made a few years ago into ther model and let it run wild with it. AI continues to be a mistake with all the bad faith garbage retards behind it do. Unfortunately the way AI works (information source laundering) it's quite hard to prove this since the websites that let you generate that shit almost pride themselves in not letting you see the sources that inspired the generated image, either on the UI or in the metadata.
That's more on the Eastern side of Rule34. For example he didn't mention a lot of free gacha games that became so relevant that is imposible to not have seen them. Probably beginning with Tohou all the way to Genshin impact. Big things like Visual novels, cosplay, idols, RPGs, etc... history of tentacle porn itself is interesting. Is like the west and the east evolved two different histories and are now slowly converging in a single perverted entity. Ai just gave everyone a big jump.
@@ruyman90 Rarely have you seen the market Hatsune Miku is all over the place from Western markets to Eastern markets to Mexico I've even seen her in Russia same with some of the other well-known characters is not just an eastern thing if anything were just getting into it now it's going to be exploding big time especially with AI
That's actually a very interesting history video, no jokes. It's detailed, filled with "trivia" and relatively digestible. Good one comrade. p.s. At 32:36, the reason why the Pyro (or more specifically FEM Pyro) is so popular, is because in the game the gender of the character is not specified, since you can't see it's face either. Actually, they don't even confirm it's a normal human either. This gives a wide variety of contexts in which you could put it, basically making jt an "everything goes" as long as it's anthropomorphic.
Amazing video! Really appreciate the effort gone into this. As someone who's been around the internet and tentatively interested in such things for a long time I was surprised at just how much stuff I didn't know from this! Real eye opening stuff. Also love the idea that we should celebrate the hard work these artists put in!
Great video, always love to see Newgrounds pop up in internet history moments. I do want to add some context/add a correction: I’m an art moderator on NG, and the SFM/Scene creator rule you cited is only for the Art Portal section of the site. The animation section has plenty of SFM loops of ripped/lightly modified in-game assets. It’s a bit of a point of contention for the community - especially when misrated adult content gets a Daily Award. I just checked and if you sort by “newest” in animation with A content enabled there’s an Atomic Heart SFM corn loop This being said I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of these submissions accounts ended up deleted or abandoned anyway when site made it so A rated content can only be viewed with an account.
I genuinely respect the effort you put into this. Great job! You've validated my habit of saving all the good, tasteful stuff I come across. Often, I've gone back to find some works of art just to find that they aren't there anymore.
Bro I'm falling in love w your vids, the time passes so quickly. Plus this subject has interested me too, so appreciate the research haha! Subbed, liked, and saved to watch later- whenever I'm bored
Seriously, thank you for making this video. I've spent so many years being both a degenerate and someone who appreciates the hell out of the quality and work that goes into the stuff made in these spaces, and the history of it that you went over (some of which I was familiar with, some of which was all new to me!) is important. It matters. So thank you for covering this knowing potential issues that might come from doing so!
I think you forgot minus8 in that discussion. He deleted his account because of an incident a few years ago, but he is arguably the single largest influence for r34 on newgrounds. None of the people you mentioned would exist without him.
The original draft of the video included minus8 (the ankhazone video is based on their work, after all) but I didn't know how to talk about them after that
@Lextorias fair enough. He had the largest influence over Nintendo franchises like Mario and AC. Before that, these characters had no real association with the medium, more trolling like the Disney situation.
I stopped the video wholesale when Lex said the Nile video came from Zone. Said "hold up, wasn't that minus8?" Minus8 did some really amazing work. Right up there with RexxCraft before he got confronted by Blizzard Lawyers.
Yea just a little insight on the "Italian Senate incident": The info of the zoom call was posted, publicly, on twitter. The person who made that post, containing the password to join said call was, get ready: Included in the "Pioneers for Internet for reseach in Italy", Recieved a MASTER in IT Security in 2003, was Chief of IT Security for the Universities of Modena and Reggio Emilia (untill 2009) worked (on something) in The Italian Federation of Universities and Research Institutions for Authentication and Authorization (untill 2018) How someone with this "timeline" managed to (ALLEGEDLY) post publicly on twitter the access info to a SENATE Zoom Call should be indelebly etched in history

He covered porn voice actors and actresses and started to show love towards the NSFW industry and talks a lot about how people should be more aware of it and appreciate its community because that community is constantly under fire by someone or something.
Adult content is criminally under respected. For a lot of people when you bring up r34 they're just like 'heh funny cartoon' and completely disregard the amount of work that goes into this art form. TL;DR: based
There was an animator called SableServiette who made Zelda BoTW animations that were such high quality that people were sharing snippets of them claiming they were actual in game cutscenes. They were insanely talented, but then Nintendo came along and struck them so hard with a cease a desist they haven’t made anything since.
While SFM is obviously the most important advancement in the advent of 3D I fell a bit missing without the mention of MikuMikuDance or MMD which was released in 2008 and is a dance music video software that was quickly used for adult dance videos and has an active adult animation community to this day
The video is still monetized! 👍
Here's a couple of updates/corrections:
The shirt had some mage guy from Ragnarok online next to the word "Pa-Heal" which apparently means "Heal, please!" in Tagalog."
I have a screenshot of the full email up on twitter if you want to read it: twitter.com/lextorias/status/1750052996069867656

An important thing to know about Metadata is that it isn't just Canadian, it was made by the Canadian government. It was made by the National Film Board using a computer owned by the National Research Council.
Now this is a good use of my tax dollars

Funny how a good nude model still looks good with clothing on it, almost like it was built from the inside out!

@@En_Joshi-GodrezWhat is fucking, if not naked fighting?

Dawg he literally just explained that adult art is a byproduct of digital innovation *not* the other way around _explained in detail by the artists themselves_

I'm not that desperate for money or attention... for now, things could change in the future.)

I really love documentaries when it brings irony, history, and jokes together. Also, as a man of culture, I thank you for explaining the history of Doujin and how the internet brought culture to the masses.
I'm cursed to have all this interesting knowledge but no way to share it without looking like a weirdo.
This was really well put together, the respectful way you talk about the medium is 👌, really enjoyed the R34 timeline, was great!
and reaching to the OG animators was such a nice cherry on the cake,
and oh how I was waiting for you to bring up Overwatch and the well deserved NIER/Yokotoaro namedrop
Yoko Taro truly is a legend for his hilarious behavior and support of the r34 community.
Nier Automata was the first Yoko Taro game to really hit mainstream and it is pretty much because of 2B assets.
And it's deserved, not only because 2B's ass (where is A2 in this, come on), it's story and philosophical themes leave you thinking about it way after playing it, Drakengard also does this, but like, for the opposite
As we say, come for the 2booty, stay for the existential questions on what it means to be human.
Uh. No.
Nier Automata was a fucking fun game with great music, visuals and combat. That's the reason BEHIND the popularity of 2B porn. There's plenty of crappy games out there with cool character designs that nobody will ever make porn of because they're just shit games that nobody wants to play. Your post makes zero sense and is extremely condescending to the work of hundreds of people who worked on one of the best games of that generation.
as an r34 artist myself im very grateful for your very thorough and respectful discussion of it, thank you :)

This guy looks EXACTLY like who you would imagine would host a Rule 34 video and I love it.
Great vid too.
Nice
Great video, YT surprisingly recommended it and I've never seen one of your videos before. I'm glad you've made this piece, and if this video can be preserved, future historians will be glad yo have at least this to go off of. It's amazing how much history might get buried because of the general shame around such content even though as seen here, it is just as much a part of history as everything else. Truly all knowledge should be preserved and I know I'll start doing my part to help preserve all that hot, nasty, freak-*ss knowledge.
Finally someone who thinks like me, you have no idea how much archiving over the years ive done on Rule 34 sites to make sure people's art is archived, the sad fact is a lot of good art is being buried under AI art which is really really disappointing
The reason I started doing it was because of places like Tumblr nuking art, hundreds of thousands of artworks where lost and then also when a good friend of mine died i realised a lot of their artworks where not available anymore online so I've been archiving them as well
Thank you for your service.
ouch, sorry for your loss
Someone's gotta do the same with music. Just incase main servers go down from who knows what. That's why I like dvd, VHS, cassettes. The whole shabang. Kinda cool someone's doing it with the sexy stuff. You go man, hope your friend had fun and enjoyed as much as he could.
@@_Hero_Link_ thanks, it's been a few years now but I still miss them
@@FoxySpartan117 I completely agree, physical media is always important as well as having a real place to put older content, if companies weren't so anti-consumer we would have had something like that already
I'm amazed at this well documented, researched, and edited video you made with just one hand.
Yoko Taro truly is the🐐, didn't know he followed up on his favor.
54:43 It's not just adult content. In this day and age, people assume that all of history will be written down, archived properly, and easily accessible. But most history is lost to time: especially so for this topic.
Please never stop doing these deep dives into topics like this, someone has to do it

Dead Internet theory is more real than people think
Get a job.

Why Is Everyone Being So Offensive Towards This Commenter Bro Just Chill For A Second He Just Spitting Out Some Facts
I really appreciate the amount of work you did to produce this research. You're awesome
I'm genuinely surprised you didn't touch on MMD in your Rule 34 history; I'd love a video exploring its history and more. Not just that, but AI-generated artwork, while potentially untouched by human hands, has gained immense popularity. It's practically ubiquitous on major social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
ah the MMD scene, with out favorite Vocaloid songs, being blessed with interesting dances.
Dude mmd goes hard
@@ruyman90 Rarely have you seen the market Hatsune Miku is all over the place from Western markets to Eastern markets to Mexico I've even seen her in Russia same with some of the other well-known characters is not just an eastern thing if anything were just getting into it now it's going to be exploding big time especially with AI

You are one hell of a historian on topics I didn't know I wanted to know.
I'm so happy I understood the “part one, early cinema” bit. I see you also like it when men carry things mr. Lex
I can only imagine the amount of research it took to pull something like this together. Thank you for this gift. :)
You did a ton of research bro. you earned this like and sub. Keep it up :)
Amazing video! Really appreciate the effort gone into this. As someone who's been around the internet and tentatively interested in such things for a long time I was surprised at just how much stuff I didn't know from this! Real eye opening stuff. Also love the idea that we should celebrate the hard work these artists put in!
But it's porn.
I just checked and if you sort by “newest” in animation with A content enabled there’s an Atomic Heart SFM corn loop
This being said I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of these submissions accounts ended up deleted or abandoned anyway when site made it so A rated content can only be viewed with an account.
Great stuff, easily one of the best vids of the year so far and your best one to date.
And heck that growth in culture and consistency is getting undeniable. I did not expect you to mention the MTN DEW sandwich Dx
Three cheers for porn!
Man you talking about Newgrounds and machinama REALLY takes me back
On a video about r34 the weirdest thing I saw was "give me the nuclear bazooka" clip. The internet truly is a marvel
I always wondered what happend to minus8. Mind giving me a quick rundown?
I stopped the video wholesale when Lex said the Nile video came from Zone. Said "hold up, wasn't that minus8?" Minus8 did some really amazing work. Right up there with RexxCraft before he got confronted by Blizzard Lawyers.
Wait hr deleted his account? What happened??
Yea just a little insight on the "Italian Senate incident": The info of the zoom call was posted, publicly, on twitter. The person who made that post, containing the password to join said call was, get ready:
Included in the "Pioneers for Internet for reseach in Italy",
Recieved a MASTER in IT Security in 2003,
was Chief of IT Security for the Universities of Modena and Reggio Emilia (untill 2009)
worked (on something) in The Italian Federation of Universities and Research Institutions for Authentication and Authorization (untill 2018)
How someone with this "timeline" managed to (ALLEGEDLY) post publicly on twitter the access info to a SENATE Zoom Call should be indelebly etched in history
Yet the Rule34 and internet community swept that shite under the rug for no one to find out🤫
One thing there's no Rule 34 about - Doxxers. Unless its snuff porn. or vore..
These deep dives are always so interesting. I can't imagine the amount of work it takes to put something like this together but I'm glad you have. Thanks for the content and looking forward to the next one, they are always worth the wait.
More like deep diives, am I right? **cough**
gives me TheGamerTronShow vibes near the end. He covered porn voice actors and actresses and started to show love towards the NSFW industry and talks a lot about how people should be more aware of it and appreciate its community because that community is constantly under fire by someone or something.
Are you referring to pornstars, smut cartoonists, or both?
Adult content is criminally under respected.
For a lot of people when you bring up r34 they're just like 'heh funny cartoon' and completely disregard the amount of work that goes into this art form.
TL;DR: based
Agreed!
There was an animator called SableServiette who made Zelda BoTW animations that were such high quality that people were sharing snippets of them claiming they were actual in game cutscenes. They were insanely talented, but then Nintendo came along and struck them so hard with a cease a desist they haven’t made anything since.
While SFM is obviously the most important advancement in the advent of 3D I fell a bit missing without the mention of MikuMikuDance or MMD which was released in 2008 and is a dance music video software that was quickly used for adult dance videos and has an active adult animation community to this day
Was waiting for this comment ! MMD is sooo janky but that stopped nobody from making a lot of adult content with it.
I like you man. You speak truths on taboo topics. Keep it up, I enjoy your work.
Congrats, not only has the video not been taken down yet, but the algorithm is definitely pushing it haha.
