Thanks. The essence and purpose of lotus sutra is mentioned in chapter 16... thus as i heard... Mai ji sa ze nen. I ga ryo shujo. Toku nyu mu-jo do. Soku joju busshin. "This is my constant thought: how I can cause all living beings to gain entry to the highest Way and quickly attain Buddhahood."
Thank you. I always like experiencing the person who writes or translates sutras. Caused me to contemplate the idea of blossoming as opposed to actual blossoming. Loving Kindness, comapassion, joy and equanimity to all.
i'm currently reading prof. Reeves' translation of the Lotus sutra and i find it fascinating! He's also a very engaging lecturer as i can see. Thank you, prof. Reeves, and thank you to the person who uploaded this vid., it's really useful to those like me studying Buddhism
I have read the Lotus Flower Sutra , I understand it as a means to see the most hidden essence of what one is just like a reflected image would show our physical outlook & when that happens we can see and make the necessary adjustments , example women puts their make up to make their outlook better , men goes to the barber to have an haircut or just want to see what their look like in a mirror, well if read more than once just like you have mentioned in your clip something else gets uncovered or re-discovered but the book is the same just the same lines re-read , so it gives the opportunity to see more deeper in the understanding and this happens also with anything one reads but it is not only to understand it better it is more with what to do with it once understood better and that will come natural . One example could be , a flower that blossom better under the Light will blossom still with less Light but its unfoldment is something not quite the same , or an other example food is food but not all the food have the same nutrients and so forth . It is a precious little treasure & big in it's magnitude , both in one .
I am a Chinese buddhist. It's interesting to see how a western scholar try to understand Lotus Sutra using an academic methodology. The Lotus Sutra's essence is in the meditation process, which can only be obtained through reading repetitively. I am not even sure whether the English version would work...
You do not know the man ,a giant of the Buddhist world ,a superb scholar, fanatastic advocate of peace and last but not least the author of the best translation of the Lotus Sutra in English ,wake up mate and get real your cultural or linguistic understanding is limited in the extreme ....and work yes it does certainly better than in any other language .
While it is true that the Chinese does not specify "lotus" flower, the Sanskrit title, that the earliest translators into western languages were aware of, does: puṇḍarīka means white lotus. The root used for this name is also the root for puṇya, or merits. The flowering and growing metaphors are very deep and very extensive in the Sanskrit too. As Kumarajiva said, writing Chinese translated from Sanskrit is like feeding people chewed up rice--the same certainly applies to English.
Yes, the "lotus" symbol is very important in more ways that can easily be explained. The fact that the plant flowers and seeds at the same time, the way the lotus uses nutrients from muddy water, refines the water and repels the mud with its hydrophobic leaves to emerge pristine from the muck; the manner in which the lotus resembles aspects of sacred geometry related to toroidal flow, and represents what happens to the crown chakra upon awakening. The lotus, is by no means, chosen arbitrarily.
It seams that If 華 is read huá, It usually means grand or magnificent, have many other meanings. If 華 is read huā, it is a variant 花 which means flower, blossom etc.

Eva, I have many warm memories of your dad, your home in Hyde Park, and the teen-aged Eva Reeves. Hope you're happy and well. Davidson Loehr

I am Trying to find the other 4 parts to lecture talk then part 1 will make more sense
Its the Sutra's strength
The middle word ‘hua’ in 法华经 is Grand, not 花 flower.
法華経 the meaning of the middle kanji is flower.
It seams that
If 華 is read huá, It usually means grand or magnificent, have many other meanings.
If 華 is read huā, it is a variant 花 which means flower, blossom etc.
A lot of fluff in Part 1.

Flowering Revelation: Buddhism is Pagan!
A mind is a terrible thing to waste!
Buddhism is certainly an earth-centered tradition, but it's primary emphasis is not on that particular.
No it isn’t. Paganism is ignorance. Buddhism is true knowledge of the mind.
complete waste of time ,
