I wish you had access to the Eurovision Grand Final version of this. But i think it's blocked in the US. It's an incredible performance. She essentially performed the whole thing on the same flexible pole thing that the dancer at the back is on in this performance. Incredible control to sound so perfect whilst moving back and forth on one of those poles.
This is Kate... Trained Opera singer but went into writing and singing pop - like many Australian musicians she isn't bound to a particular genre, which makes her music much more experimental than US musicians can be.
This song is about overcoming depression, post natal depression to be precise, which Kate suffered after the birth of her son. Her style of singing is uniquely her own. Yes pop opera here
So, I had the privilege of working on Eurovision - Australia Decides, and I can tell you that through all the rehearsals and performances of this number, and I think I can speak for most of the crew here, we all got goose bumps every single time! And I have to add, watching this performance live in the room was so much better. Keep up the great work mate! I'm really enjoying you react to our amazing Aussie talent!
The final version of this was much better than this. She was actually floating around on a pole like the one in the background while she was singing. It was incredible. The Eurovision contest is huge worldwide, watched by millions. She reminds me a little of Kate Bush.
I was disappointed with the final tbh, because I felt like the augmented reality distracted from the AMAZING vocal performance on that damn pole. I actually think that let her down on the voting because the staging distracted from the quality song.
So glad you've been acquainted with KMH. She my favourite singer. So talented! When she sang this at Eurovision, she was on one of those bendy things that the lady in the background was on. So, not only was she singing the song live, note perfect but moving around on a bend pole in sky using all her core muscles to control it. It was phenomenal. A fantastic song of hers is Vertigo where she sings pop opera and yodels.
It would have been great for you to see the final performance of this at Eurovision. It was visually stunning and she actually performed it on one of those bendy poles, as you see behind her in this. Love it all the same. Kate is very experimental and is really her own genre. The ABC Doco on her was called Out of The Box, because she doesn't like to be placed in one.
You are close its opera/pop/rock Kate is very experimental and its true what you said she is very playful and sometimes its on the edge of not working but it does work. I dont love her but I respect her experimental use of talent. PS: its fine too that you dont love her but appreciate her inventiveness and its true she can sing not even a question. Thanks for covering this one.
Yes Nick, opera pop is pretty accurate. This song is about the black cloud of depression and coming out of a fog, hence the person in black behind her. She's very quirky with her own style but has a fantastic voice
So this performance is from “Australia Decides” When Australia choose her to represent us, she upped her game and the staging was literally out of this world. If you are able to watch it at all it is sooo worth watching as she is literally on 12 foot pole singing and swaying and not missing a beat. And the visuals are brilliant
I know Kate personally and yes she truly is as lovely as she seems. She writes with her husband Keir Nuttal who is an exceptional musician too. He fronted a band named Transport back in 2001. They're a dynamic duo and don't ever stick to a particular genre. Folk music is a first love of Kate's although she's classically trained in voice through the Conservatorium Of Music here in Brisbane, QLD.
Lovely Brissie girl- her dad was my high school principal. My favourite of hers is probably Words, live at the Arias. Or, Living in an Apartment, or Career Advice (live on Rockwiz). You can really get a sense for how very eccentric she is. There’s also Can’t Shake It, God’s Gift to Women, and I like you better when you’re not around. She’s definitely one of those singers that sounds best when singing her own songs. And she’s VERY eccentric. And very well trained. Another well trained Aussie soprano is Katie Noonan. You might like her cover of Heart’s a Mess, or Breathe in Now or Special Ones that she did with her band, George.
@@PeterAtkinson oops sorry if you got that deletion, wrong person. Kate is probably my fav singer. I'm an Aussie and I was in choirs for many many years as a teen and young adult so her style really appeals to me. She sings a lot of interesting and funny songs, many of which are covers, and very Aussie in nature. I just love it all. A lot of her music can be found on Spotify.
I think she’s absolutely brilliant. Ha ha. I totally get her now thanks to this song. She does what Sarah Brightman tries to do only she’s much more exciting than Sarah Brightman. I love it! This is how you mix opera and pop. Dimash sometimes does something like this, but he’s all over the place in different genres and that’s cool. Thank you for introducing her to me a week ago, and coming back so soon!
I have seen her live 4 times. My wife had never seen her and I said to her "strap yourself in because she is jellignite". She is really humble and personable too and signed a cd for a friend"s birthday.
Kate is the only human to sing at the New York opera company Coachella, Eurovision and stage musical she is phenomenal. She would be considered operatic pop she plays piano and also write some varied styles ballads humourous songs and pop Explore Last Man On Earth Gods Gift To Women Deluded to name a few
HEY! If you want to hear the most incredible voice from Eurovision, may I suggest you to watch : "Elina Nechayeva - La Forza (Estonia, Grand Final, LIVE, Eurovision 2018)" The last notes are out of this world! I PROMISE YOU'LL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!
The other version is better, but thanks for reacting to our Kate. I don't think it's an actual genre, I think she's just doing her thing. I don't think anyone else really does it and you either like her music or you don't. :)
The performances at Eurovision (Semi's and Finals) was so much better than this (she was on the floating pole too, with 2 backup performers) - though her amazing voice is still amazing here. But lets be honest there is a reason she received the artistic award at Eurovision 2019 - you need to watch that version. It's one of my favourite Eurovision performances in the last 15 years.
Hi TSR, two more brilliant Aussie singers for you. The first song, written by Leon Russell and was a hit by Karen Carpenter, the second song is a brilliant and some say better version of a Beatles hit: Colleen Hewitt followed by Doug Parkinson th-cam.com/video/H-gB_wWvDHI/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/nU2DSrY9A6s/w-d-xo.html
Kate doesn't really fit any set genre, she has songs like Sarah, Caught In the Crowd and Last Day on earth that are almost ballads, songs like Words, Mama, Little Roots, Can't shake, etc it that are pop, songs like Humiliation and O'Vertigo that are popera, then there are tracks like the Facebook Song, the Toowoomba song, Christmas Landfill, Beard downstairs, etc that are straight comedy.

Yeah that pole thing was amazing
Popera is exactly what it is. She’s not my favourite but I appreciate her unique voice and talent
Yeah easily the best performance of this song.
Wrong clip. The Eurovision final is better production and presentation when she is on the pole too
@@stephenmcguire7079 agreed.
So many Aussies aren't into genres - its good or it isn't -this genre is Kate Miller-Heidke

Have you heard her song ‘Caught in the Crowd’ about bullying? I think it’s her best.
So glad you been getting into Aussie music 🎶 hugs from Australia 🇦🇺

The semifinal one is better then the final for audio quality though.

Australia has been great in Eurovison, Guy and Jess mauboy have both sung for us at EV but Dami Im was the best hands down
Dami Im was the best of them.
I second this!
Popera !! Her quirky side does remind me of Kate Bush...mixed with opera.... Kate is one of a kind.. clearly haha...

Gosh yes! Career Advice!
The whole effect is sooo much better in the Eurovision video! You need to watch that one for the full effect of this unique song/singer.
Her dad and my dad were mates when they were teaching together. Honestly have always love Kate Miller Heidkes vocal range, absolutely amazing!
Her best song is still O Vertigo. Got to check out the performance with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. It’s brilliant! 👍👍

She performed a fantastic version of 'I will Survive' by Gloria Gayner on the Australian version of The Masked Singer.
Well worth a reaction.
You'll understand her better if you hear her sone, "Last day on Earth"
I adore her. Her voice is phenomenal. She wrote this song about her experience with postnatal depression.
Kata has a voice of a Angel. My Angel.
Oh no! I wish you reacted to the Eurovision version. Just change your VPN
I got goosebumps rewatching this.
The final for this gives me goosebumps, was a winning performance for me. But I love Queen Kate. My fave of hers is "Words"
Check out Estonia’s Eurovision entry to 2018 if you want to hear/listen to opera pop, while this more pop with opera singing -)
Kate has done a beautiful version of " I wanna dance with somebody " 💕
You have to see the performance from the grand final
Kate is classically trained in opera. An amazing singer and songwriter.
She has created her own genre!
Did you ever do Last Day on Earth?
This line killed me. “I don’t know what she’s standing on? 700 people, whatever.” 😂😂😂 Awesome singer!

It's staccato , it's not scatting. She's known for her opera pop style.
Reminds me of the 5th element
Another song of hers that’s more ‘pop’ is the last night on earth it might not throw you so much
