A solid upgrade over the SL2-S. Well done Leica for making cameras with tilt screens. Seems as though tilt screen is now reserved for the luxury market, but at least they are still in production.
Nice work on those film stills, Bobby! I'm a big fan of this new SL3 series. Very tempting, but with the Z9, Z8 and Zf, there's literally no world where I can make a business case for it that wouldn't involve a lot of self-deception, lol. And I have to say, I was equally impressed with the images you were getting with the Zf and APO-Lanthar. Say what we will about 24MP, but the reality is that it still provides better high ISO and DR than 45MP+ sensors. When you edit thousands of files, you just see it over and over again. IQ isn't just about resolution, after all, it's also about how a particular sensor renders. Great review...
where I live the SL2-S is on sale (new) for 2800USD. It kinda makes the SL3 and SL3-S a hard purchase. Do you see any reason to upgrade to the SL3-S if you primarily mount M glass?
Great camera - I’ve got the SL2 and use it with M glass. However, from a pure technical perspective (not build quality) I’ve been using the LUMIX s5 II with my Leica glass but also native Panasonic and Sigma (Art) L lenses. Hard to beat from a tech perspective and quality of image is there. I still love Leica design SL cameras but one has to cost justify for, at times, lagging technology. Great video on the SL3!
Thanks, Bobby, for the great review! Your photos really made me want to buy the new SL3-S-until I realized the SL2-S is available for less than $2400 in the U.S. It lacks the fast phase-detection hybrid focus, which makes the SL3-S a tough sell for someone like me who doesn’t prioritize autofocus for photography. I feel like this is a missed opportunity for Leica. The SL2-S offers incredible value for its price, with excellent low-light performance that has allowed it to hold its value even better than the SL2. For the SL3-S to stand out, I believe it should have included a stacked or partially stacked sensor. This would appeal to photographers who need fast autofocus and higher burst rates. While stacked sensors might slightly impact dynamic range, other brands (or perhaps their collaboration with Sony) have shown it’s possible to deliver excellent performance with stacked sensors.
I'm smiled every time when you were excited about the AF of this SL3-S :D Awesome job on the video as always Bobby! We can see your authentic excitement about this big AF upgrade. In my eyes it's a no brainer Leica has to provide an firmware upgrade for the SL3 to match this AF performance. And I really really hope this AF performance is technical possible to transfer to the Q3 line up. The slow AF on my Q3 43 is the only con I have about that camera. At it only hurts my eyes, because they have the collab with Panasonic and the S5II + S9 perform so much better in AF compared to the Q3s. Btw was it your dog in the car clip? :)
Thank you. Yes I hope they implement this AF to the Q3 and SL3. Will definitely help sway more people to the system. Yes that was my dog in the clip :)
There is some visible banding in the ISO 10000+ in your shots, hopefully that's only the video compression. Was hoping for more to be honest. Maybe I am going to pick one up but not sure yet.
I was really looking forward to the SL-3s. I know it shoots RAW through HDMI, I wonder if it’ll BlackMagic RAW just like the SL2-s with the video assist. Maybe I’ll have to wait until it supports anamorphic. Maybe I missed it, is the 4k60 cropped? Glad to hear autofocus is improved
Hi Bobby, thanks for this introduction of the SL3-S ! 2 questions please : how do you find the EVF and the battery life in comparison to the SL3 ? For me, it was 2 downsides for the SL3 : not so good battery life, and the EVF that had a bad resolution when magnifying for manual focus (even if great in general). Thanks a lot !
Thanks for watching. The EVF unfortunately is the same but Leica is aware of the issue on the SL3. Battery life is actually okay. Obviously shooting video will drain quick but it’s okay
@@btonelli That's so disappointing to hear that the low quality magnified live view is also an issue with the SL3-S. I went back to the SL2-S after trying the SL3 for this reason.
Annnnnd right when I thought I’d pick up a Z8. I have been on the fence here. Long time Fuji shooter but want to streamline to SL and M. The auto focus complaints have had me hesitant for a while.
This sounds a lot like the Nikon Z6III…did the release notes say anything about a partially stacked sensor? Or is this basically the same sensor as the S5IIx?
@ gotcha, thanks for the clarification! So one could kind of say this is an S5II/x in a tuxedo, with a better EVF and internal pro res recording from the CF B card?
Love your energy with this review. Got one coming. I like high pixel pitch (PP) cameras which you cannot get with 60 and 100MP cameras. SL3S has 5.94 and most other cameras (except for the Fuji 50SII) have around 3.75 PP. The 50SII has 5.31 PP. When I look at my Leica image inventory of the last 12 years (after the M9), CMOS sensors having a PP of around 6 are the ones I seem to like the best. Perhaps that's just me.
The new lenses over the past couple years are designed for the enhanced AF system. leica doesnt design camera one year out, they take years to design and test.
Wow! I can finally pay 3k more for a Lunix S5II to get a fancier case with fewer buttons and slower mechanical burst rates! But the CF slot and the internal prores shooting surely is worth a lot more than those measly 3k. That's the greatest innovation the camera market has ever seen! No but seriously, Leica mirrorless cameras make Hasselblad seem like a bloody good deal. I have absolutely no idea who in their right mind would buy this camera... It's not a bad camera, Panasonic does a good job on their bodies, but it's just absolutely ridiculously overpriced for what it is.
If you have never used a SL camera, give it a try! I always use the original SL and my SL2 over my A7RV unless I need the fast AF. The SL system has a much better build and user experience if you primarily take still images. With that said, I don't get the new SL3-S camera either. The only good news for me is that a mint SL2S is now below $2400 in the used market, and you could get an SL for < $1400.
alright quick question, you just reviewed the r1 which has way better autofocus and tech than the sl3-s but you were disappointed it was only 24 mp, why not have the same disappointment on a $5200 24 mp camera with way slower autofocus, color bit rate and tons of other stuff compared to the r1?
Good question. I did mention in this video I wish it had more megapixels, with that said The SL3-S is not Leica’s flagship it’s their hybrid camera. The R1 is Canons flagship and it’s the same resolution since the 1DX Mark III and the R6 II. Also the R1 is supposed to be the pinnacle sports camera for Canon. With the R3 still for sale why not give it more megapixels

with half of the price, I am happy with my SL2-S. I will pass.
And now what to do.......the AF on my SL3 is rubbish , worse than AF on GFX100II. So i doubt they will fix the AF on SL3 at the Level on the SL3 S what a same !!!!
@@streetphotography.globetro7744 I hope they do
they better do it, I have problems with camera manufacture to give the latest product with these kind of update but never update their flagship camera. Both Sl3 and sl3s have the same Maestro IV Processor though so I m sure future update.
I don’t like the second wheel on the left … that’s not the leica philosophy of the minimum you need to use 😢
Honestly it doesn’t bother me much.
@ I think people buying a leica to don’t get put into the Sony,Nikon Oder canon camp 🤣👍🏻
I would have preferred two function buttons.
