The lightweight board is only attached to the door. It rides up and down with the door and causes no interference. The 1x4 clears with about 3-4" to spare. When the 1x4 gets close to the rail it is actually almost completely transitioned to horizontal movement. Since the 1x4 is flush with the outside of the door it adds nothing to the clearance while the door is moving horizontal.

After the first time I watched this video, I did something similar, using a left-over strip of galvanized flashing, about 5 ft. long. I didn't realize that one edge had been cut with a shear, which left that edge very sharp. As it happened I put the screws along the opposite edge, so the sheared edge was "up."
Sure enough, somebody shoved their hand and wrist in there. That was pretty obvious, because they left rather a lot of blood on the metal edge, more on the concrete floor, and a trail in the snow outside. The bonus came when the culprit was _arrested_ 1/2 hour later at a nearby hospital. I'd called the police, because the motion sensor inside the garage had triggered an alarm inside the house. The police were able to follow the blood trail in the snow, and they swung by the local Emergency Ward, "on spec." As luck would have it, the "discount artist" was at the admitting desk demanding service. Oh dear. Bad timing to be yelling at the nurse just then.
It took 26 stitches to close up 2 ragged slices on his hand and wrist. The police were kind enough to wait for the stitching to be done before giving him a free ride to the Crowbar Hotel. The guy who had been cut was so mad that he actually told them exactly _how_ he'd gotten the cuts. They had the video recorders running at the time, so not much of a defense later. He and his bud had visited 3 other homes on our lane that night, and were charged for those as well.
I had a follow-up visit from a Sergeant in the "property crimes" unit, who advised me (almost managing to keep a straight face) that placing booby traps or other devices that could cause bodily harm is contrary to some bylaw. I showed him the receipt from the sheet metal shop where I'd bought the steel flashing, and where I'd used 13-14 ft. of it to repair the eaves, so this was a left-over and not "intentionally" set to harm a potential thief. I even showed him your video. I think the video convinced him why I'd put the metal strip in place. He did suggest I consider changing to a piece of 1 x 4, like your video. He also warned me that the accused, who was in custody awaiting trial, was HIV positive, and that I should wipe everything down with bleach.
The "injured party," who had many prior convictions, went to the Penitentiary for 2 years less a day, after agreeing to take a drug rehab program and abide by a long list of conditions after release. Now, everyone who feels sorry for him, say, "Awwwww."
What kind of motion detector do you have that would go off just seeing a hand...
I sure hope you did as the officer suggested and replaced your "booby trap" with a piece of wood. I would say you have been fortunate because the "victim" could have sued you and most likely you would no longer have a garage.

Come on, man!! You’ve got to think like a lawyer! Tape a little decal next to the garage warning about bodily harm when touching the garage door. Since traps don’t have a warning (by definition), therefore it CANNOT be a booby trap, officer. Case dismissed!
Even better: Tape a decal giving instructions on how to operate your “bloody arm shredder”, stating that by using the device they contractually agree to pay you $500, and that you are not liable for any damages. Now they owe you!
I have such a note on my BMW “face peeling eye blinding ” machine. It works really well and I have collected over $3,000 (but gee wiz, my customers never seem to be happy with the results) 😅
This is a great tip and idea, I did all 21ft of my garage door and I also added a foam seal under the board which seals the top of the door really well to the garage opening.... what a great tip thank you!!!

The arm is not at a 45 degree angle. If the arm is adjusted correctly you can't do that with a coat hanger, guaranteed.
45 degree angle on the arm does 2 things. First it gives it a tight seal on the floor. Second, it applies pressure against the top section. Meaning it pushes it tight against the header. Just adjust the arm and down limit correctly and you won't have a break in. Hope this helps!
Exactly how I have mine set up. if you can push a gap into the top of you door, it's not setup correctly.

Liftmaster is recommending a 30 degree angle on the new travel module type operators due the units failing the "2x4" test.
I did a condo with 198 doors. I showed the kitchen cabinet guy how to do that. He loved it. He was always able to get in!
I wonder if a bare wire connected to a 220v outlet placed in the area where that coat hanger is coming through would be a deterrent?

jackshaft opener. costs more but worth it. it actually throws an electronic controlled deadbolt into the track, blocking access to the roller and creating a secondary lock.

1A Garage Doors... Maybe when theyre installed incorrectly. In the past 11 years of professional installations, my company has experienced less than 10% fail rate. This is both in high humidity near beaches and low humidity/high temperatures in desert towns. But liftmaster makes better quality openers for the price than any other manufacturer, in my experience. I work alongside my father with over 30 years in this industry alone. No disrespect, just all in my own experience.

A "C" clamp in the side rails will prevent the door from opening, however you won't be able to open the door via remote control or from the outside. It definitely will prevent the door from opening.

I wonder if a length of 1" or 1.5" square steel tubing attached to the upper most edge of the door panel would make the upper door panel so rigid that they can't push it in to see what they're doing or even be able to maneuver the coat hanger hook.
Good advice SSF I have replaced my double up an over door with a motorized shop front type roller blind type but it was not cheap & cost me £1500 so your idea is very handy and I like the price very much
As a side note dealing with low life theft from all us law abiding people , those of you guys with vans please be aware many vans with central locking can be broken into by using a hacksaw blade between the trailing edge of the rear door and the hinge pillar to cut the power cable to the lock this can drop out the central locking, I fitted a small plastic sleeve over the cable this rotates so stops the blade from cutting

Good idea, however in my area the thieves are using a 6" hole saw to cut into the door, then they reach in for the lanyard to open the door. I have removed my lanyard completely stop them from gaining access that way. I will also install the the 2X4 as an added precaution. Thanks for the tip
Wow, they're bold. That would make a great amount of noise. I've heard of thieves using small drill bits just to get a hanger in but never a 6" hole saw. I also put a piece of 1/4" cement board in my top panel. It is lightweight but will dull any metal drill bit or hole saw in split second.
Thanks for that cement tip. The thieves pull up with a box truck and back right up to the door drill the hole in about 10 secs open and load all they can in about 10-20 mins and out. Neighbors think your moving and rarely challenge them. It's settled down a bit but with summer they'll be back.

Good idea. In my case, I don’t have a garage door opener. So I put a padlock in a hole in the track so that the wheels jam when going up. So the door is locked in place. Then I enter from a side door and unlock the padlock when I need to use the overhead door.
I just zipped tied the emergency release handle through the one hole . this way it will just bend the hangar when they try to pull it. but yet in the even of a emergency you can still give the emergency release a good hard tug and it will snap the zip tie.
Alot of people died in California fires because of being trapped in their garages. I would be careful with that.
This is why you use a metal hanger PLUS a zip tie.

If your house is on fire and your trying to get out thru your garage then you're a big dummy. Also i can kick thru a garage door if its an "emergency". I see 3-5 people a day 5 days a week and talk to them about their garage doors. Let's go with 4 for easy math. So 4x5 is 20 people a week, or 80 people a month, or 960 people a year. I know how many people understand their garage door and how many dont. You have no idea how many people out there are clueless about their garage door.
Just because you know how to work your garage door, doesn't mean your neighbor does. Look up "the sally Ann test" lmao. I cant tell you how many calls I've shown up to just because their Emergency release cable was pulled.
Anyway, yeah sure your garage door may be a cheap, shitty, home depot door, that is non insulated and as thin as paper. BUT there are many different doors on the market. Some are a lot stronger. Not to mention insulated doors are WAY stronger. I've seen people who have driven their cars into their garage door and the door was only slightly bent, OR THEIR TRACK RIPPED OFF THE WALL AND THEIR DOOR WAS ONLY SLIGHTLY DENTED.
And when it comes to windows garage door windows are typically small and they are atleast 5'-8' off of the ground. Good luck climbing thru a window that is smaller than you and high off the ground.
Furthermore you are completely ignoring the fact that OLD PEOPLE EXIST, OR A LOT OF PEOPLE PARK THEIR CARS IN THE GARAGE.

The drive rod is installed wrong the drive rod should be at 45 deg so when the door stops. the door will be wedged tight against the top of wall. there are travel adjustment screws that control when the door stops it should stop with the top of the door is tight against the wall driven to this point by the motor.
That is how I originally had it. If the rod is lengthened to the last holes it is still not at a 45 and then door hangs down 4-6" into the door opening when fully opened(not acceptable). Even after doing that the point at which the drive rod connects to the main travel bar is further out from the end and the its' deflection is magnified. It is still easy to wedge the door open even with full force setting. How it is installed here is exactly per Liftmaster/Craftsman instructions.

Lost power last week and when it came back on we took a surge that tripped the fuse in my shed - yep, the shed that has no side door, just the electric garage door. The one with the electrical panel inside it. I was STUCK until I saw this hack and it worked! I have ordered a cylinder lock with a cable to prevent a reoccurrence but in the meantime - thank you again!

Worked great for me too - I needed to leave the cord on there since there is no man-door to the garage. In the event of power failure, you put a key in a lock in the center of the door, pull out the lock core and the wire behind it, and pull the release down using that!
That was my first thought. You'll still have to remove the pull string though.
No, you just have to remove the T-handle. Leave the rope without even a knot on the end. Nothing to grab on to.

Very true. I thought in the past my garage was the strong point and put reinforcements on the back man door and a side window to make them virtually impenetrable. Now that I have the garage door "better" than it was it is a lot harder(never impossible) for someone to break in. Thanks, Kevin. Moe

Thanks for letting us know. My closer broke so for now I'am pad locking with long lock, pc. 1 1/2 angle and tube spacer on lock. This locks door very well.
I use a car alarm for my garage door. You can get the alarm for about $50 and then find a rectifier (kind of like a battery charger) to operate the alarm. If they even crack my door open just a little bit, the alarm goes off. The alarm also operates a relay that cuts the AC power to the door opener so the door can't be opened under AC power while the alarm is armed. I also use a small motorcycle battery as backup for the alarm in case the AC power goes out. I mounted the little flashing LED in the vent above the garage door so people can see it and I think it helps deter burglers because they can tell there's an alarm.

Now I am not saying that something like that did not happened to him at one time during that time of of the month becasue it certainty may have, but you can not establish a definitive pattern or say with absolute certainty unless you have the data to back it up. You will always get "outliers" on a graph of data, but that does not mean it is the norm or the pattern and I will NEVER just take someone for their word when it comes to facts as they MUST be proven.

Thanks 65Ford, good video, good idea. For those trying to pick holes in your approach, it's important to keep perspective. Nothing can stop someone from breaking into your garage or house if they have enough time & motivation. For me, if I stymied someone from the coat hanger approach as you have, they could just walk around to the back corner where there's a door, break the glass & open it. There's always a weakest point. Strengthen it, you just make a new weakest point somewhere else.
I think you have a really good idea. I went to the hardware/box store to buy the kit they sell, they didn't have it. Came home, watched your video. Thought, there is a great idea. Went out into the garage to give it a try. Thought about putting the screws into my door, didn't really appeal to me. I took a good look at my quick release again. I then realized I could go ahead and try the zip tie I saw in another video. I'm sticking with that for now, but I think your idea is great as well.
On the part that has the cord hanging down all I did was use a zip tie to keep it in the lock position.

You can break the zip tie by pulling down the handle. Can't break the zip tie with the hanger - not enough leverage.

Or just remove the rope and place a thick plastic cable tie in the release mechansim and mount it to the hole in the carriage. If you are concerned about safety you can use a less thick cable tie and shorten the rope. It will then be impossible for the hanger to garner enough strength to break the cable tie yet if you pull on it straight down it will snap right off.
Honestly, better to just remove the safety cable since most modern garage door openers if they feel a certain amount of pressure when closing will automatically open. If worried that you can not open when power is out, just go to best buy and but a cheap battery back-up unit and plug garage door opener into that. If power goes out there is enough juice in them to open the garage door several times and battery will automatically recharge when power comes back on.

great ideas! I used a heavy zip tie to keep the release closed and I cut the handle right off also... I love the idea of turning the release the other way around however!! I also put a deadbolt on the track that 'locks" the wheels out... unplug the opener and deadbolt it when leaving town....

It looks like a design flaw you have there because my automatic door system has the release lock all the way back at the start of the motor and not to the front like yours.

Great idea, should work in most instances, but I wonder if thieves might just drill a hole in your thin metal door and fish the wire in that way... Anyway this is useful also if you are locked out.
+Ralph Ross With an old fashioned can opener and a pair of tin snips, I can cut a hole big enough to climb thru in less than 2 minutes. Quietly. Steel garage doors are just not good at stopping things. Like heat. Or high velocity nails fired from idiots.

Watched this one awhile back and this made me think for sure. I went with the zip tie binding up the release latch method. And removed the rope. And also added a side lock latch that wasn't there. Yours is a great method though and thanks for demonstrating and opening peoples eyes !

I've got a 1 minute, bulletproof fix.
Drill all the way through the release mechanism from one side to the other, (on the other side of the drive arm pivot), and put a bolt or padlock right through it all.
Even if someone knocks your board out with a hammer and a long punch, they still won't be able to get the release to pivot with a pick.
+kickinbackinOC But, then when the door freezes shut in the winter, and you have to manually open it, you;d have to get up there and undo the bolt. This fix allows you to keep the quick release, a handy feature I've used on many occasions. Why are there criminals in the first place?
+Jason Moonsmith Being in Southern California myself, I didn't think about the door freezing up in the winter! People think we Californians don't have any real weather out here. But sometimes it gets down to a bitter 50 degrees! You actually have to put a jacket on. True!

Really quick fix, esp if you are in a rush and forgot a permanent fix: When you close the door just stick a large screwdriver through one of the holes in the rail a few inches above one of the rollers. That way if someone does try to open your door using this method, once they succeed, the best they will be able to open the garage door is a few inches.

I actually do this a lot too. Mine also has slots in the the railing on the outside edge. So I clamp a pair of vise grip pliers on one of the slots and slide a screwdriver through. Seems like the screwdriver might fall or wiggle out with some luck or finesse but with the vise grips the door is solidly in place. Again, I do this when we go out of town for a few days. Not so much an everyday thing.
No one is getting in with Vise grips on the door.

Let there be an emergency situation then tried to find some vise grips or climb up on a parked car and jimmy out that rod/bot you just added with maybe some flames lapping at your butt. There is a reason that the garage door mfg added a safety feature on a garage door.Its really not a very good idea.

Great idea - Good, simple fix!! Will install one today. I also leave a light on and radio playing in my garage 24/7. That way people think there is someone working in the garage. Hopefully!!

I USED A ZIP TIE TO KEEP IT IN THE LOCKED POSITION. EASY FIX. ATTACH ZIP TIE TO THE METAL PART ABOVE WHERE THE HOLE IS. CHEAP AND EASY FIX.
The emergency release is there for a reason!
Aaron Adams he used a zip tie. zip ties are plastic and can be easily cut from inside the garage thus the emergency release still works. and is probably the easiest cheapest way to secure the latch.

This seems like the easiest, quickest ad best solution.
Use a large padlock on the side rails to stop the wheels on the rails from moving.
Liftmaster/ chamberlain makes a device for this.... problem is a lot of people don't have the clearance to put a board like that on... I am a pro garage door tech and the absolute best way to combat this it to remove handle on rope so a hanger can't get caught up on it and then zip tie the release with a mid grade zip tie... a hanger won't be able to pull it loose... reality is no garage is truly safe!!! All someone has to do is get leverage under the door I.E. a flat crow bar then get their fingered under and yank hard!! It will rip off most j-bars or cause the trolley to jump off the carriage anyway and you really don't have to be a brute either!!!! All in all if the door is installed properly i.e. With a good tight seal unlike in the video which you do have a lot of wiggle room on and the weather trim kit right it should take longer and they will find it difficult to get in but your garage is like your front door if they want in bad enough they'll get in

ez ez If your garage isn't attached to your home then there is no "front door to go through". My question specified " if you have a detached garage." Some apartment garages are not connected to anything but a row of garages.

The Apartment garage doors should have a key lock on the door that has a cable to the carriage release. The two I used had this. And I simply had to use the key to release and open the door manually when the power was out.

Put a zip tie through the hole in the latch. There is a hole there, just look. Faster and simpler. You can cut the zip tie when you need to release the door form the carriage.

Drill a hold thru the track above one of the rollers and put a large padlock thru with the lock on the roller side. Done. Also thieves will kick out the panels on a wood door with ease . Once in they can easily get the door open from inside. I attached expanded steel to all the panels so if the punch or kick thru they pull back a stump. My shop is also alarmed separately from the house. The man door has been reinforecewith 3\8 plywood both sides of the door and 5" screws in all hinges. All windows have 2.5w X 1\8 steel bars across with carriage bolts right thru the frame ... the only way you'd get in my shop is if you drove a truck thru the big door...then 2 dobermans come to greet you :) and its ALL on 8 cameras :) ...

Right above the board you should put a half inch round stock of ground bar hooked up to 220v. You should be able to identify your wanna be burgler after that.

Zip tie the latch that's what I do. Only someone that needs to open the emergency release can pull on the rope and break the zip tie to open the garage. Boom solution.
Good idea. One guy recommended turning the lever around to face the other direction. Then there's nothing to grab onto. I guess you would also have to remove the string though. I don't like the thought of not having the pull string.

Great Idea! My door has an angle iron across the length of the top of the door so it doesn't flex very much, but I will probably add your idea as well. Just a thought if you don't have it, put angle iron down first, then the 2x4 for added security.

4 years ago I bought a Genie at Home Depot. When the latch is up it is protected so it can't be pulled down with a tool. The release rope plastic end is thin and would just fold in half if you tried to hook it with a tool.
alarm + ornery mastiff + 12 gauge is how I make my garage secure. if I'm out of town, I lock my garage door.

I welded a 3/16ths plate to the backside of the hanger arm in front of the latch. The whole length of the arm. It worked so well that I am applying for a patient.
How About just mount a loaded gun, that might fix the thief when they get that hanger on the pulley hooked to the trigger and Pull!

Knolltop Farms U.S. laws allow victim of any crime to claim self defense when someone intrude into your private space or during when you are being attack. The moment the crook step into your private space is when this law take into effect. I don't know a lot about U.S. laws but this was what I'm told. I was advised to kill the person outside my home and pull the body inside and call police to take the body away. I'm never a violent person and this method never agree with me until I was victimized so many times. But when all else failed this will be the method I would use. I pray to God that I never use this method. What I fear is God punishment.

The laws regarding self protection with deadly force is slightly different from State to State but your phrasing is slightly wrong. As a basic rule you are only able to protect yourself with deadly force if your life or someone else life is deemed endangered. Just having someone on your property, in your car robbing it, or even in your garage; do not warrant deadly force nor will the law protect you if you kill or harm that person. All states allow you to protect yourself and others with deadly force if someone breaks into your home(not garage) when you are there or if a person is attempting to physically cause extensive harm to you. If the criminal runs out the front door you can not shoot them as they poss no threat. That is where the "joke" of dragging them back into your home comes into play. But, one State (Texas) out of fifty in the USA allows a person to protect his personal property with the use of deadly force when necessary. It is felt Americans that we have the right to protect ourselves and our families from those who would harm them. We believe this should be a right of any human in the world.
Correct, huge difference between violent and property crime in all States besides Texas, and even though I hate thieves and wish the punishments for their crimes would include much stronger use of restitution for the possessions they steal from hard working people, I don't believe in killing someone over possessions. IMHO that's just shallow and inhuman, a good insurance policy is far better, and takes all of the unforeseen variables out of it.
I believe that instead of allowing prisoners to work out, watch TV, and tattoo themselves all day, that they should force them to learn a trade while paying for all of their housing along with any restitution they owe.
That of course doesn't pay the massive prison-for-profit system we have here and may actually reduce the populations of our privatized prisons, so it will never happen.
A string of fireworks inside of a metal can may be a fun deterrent, as long as you made sure that there was no way for them to light your house on fire :D
sixtyfiveford These network of criminals who intruded into my home didn't just broke into to steal, they came in with the intention to cause serious harms and killing. I never even called the police when they came steal my things. They came and destroys everything. Anything with screws they removed some out. And anything electronic they made them either not to work or part working. The most horrible things was that they lied to everyone in the neighborhood that I did all that to other people. And they did the same with the places I shopped and went to my work place to lies to my co-workers and boss. There are many more horrible things they've done.

sixtyfiveford if thats what you took from that your a robbery waiting to happen as a first time thief isnt going to go for a garage door because of several factors 1st being it almost always faces the street and due to a lack of confidence that eliminates the garage door from their list of options, 2nd they are fearful of the unknown mainly whats behind that garage door. third the bathroom window is most often in the back of the home and is left unlocked more than locked so even if it is locked there are plethora of entry points in the back of the home that can be attacked without fear of immediate discovery. it kinda helps to know how a thief works.
The video is about protecting your garage door and only your garage door. Not how to lock up a home to prevent theft, how to butter bread, nor how to change the tires on a 1959 Ferguson tractor.

If you like, you can add a second layer of protection by screwing an extra piece of wood in the same angle, but a bit higher and against the fixed structure above the garage door. If you then try to push in a piece of cloth hanger, it will bend down and it's impossible to reach something higher.
Thanks for this. This matter has worried me for a while as there have been a spate of break-ins recently where folk do not lock the inter-leading door from garage into house when leaving and as a result the thieves break and enter via the garage door, probably using the method your described and demonstrated. It involves more PT but those door slide locks are the answer if you store more than a car in the garage. Just means moving your car outside, parking, closing and locking the door from the inside then leaving the house via the front door. I think you would get used to it after a while.

I use a slide connected to the side of the door that slides into the frame work on the side of the door. The slides can be padlocked also. The garage is secure but has to be opened and locked manually. Considering the tools in the garage it is well worth the inconvenience. The side door is alarm protected, has a deadbolt and two x four under the knob.
It really works, my 2 yrs kid just locked my password locker inside and we didn't notice that, after we came back outside we found we are locked outside, I felt lucky that I found this video, and break out into my house from garage instead of break the window, thanks for sharing😓
One person tried this, but didn't do it right.
This is actually a far better idea than I've seen elsewhere. I would still recommend moving your arm back a little bit (2-3 holes on the straight arm) so that your opener will put a little more forward force on the top of the door, to help hold it against the header.

I had a scenario, what if the thief had a crowbar or another piece of 2x4 with them and just knock out the board screwed down at the angle you have it. I doubt you want to try it but I think it could be knocked out pretty easy. Great video by the way I will definitely will look into this great idea. Keep up the great videos!
Great initiative! In you're instance you have a lot of headroom so your torsion assembly is relatively high to the door. When the door is cut to minimum headroom (on standard track like yours) or low headroom kits, that board will foul on the centre torsion bearing or the motor shaft itself.
I guess you have proposed the low cost alternative and that's great where it will work. A better way would be to introduce an electric lock that introduces a blocker above any of the rollers.
They can also break the cheap window and get in that way. alarm your garage doors as well, you can also add an additional lock on the exterior. Thanks for the video

I like the steel brace bar attached to the top of the door with the opener attached to it. At first my door didn't have any brace bar and soon door started forming a V in the center. I screwed a wooden strip to brace it. Seems to be holding so far.

Great garage door video I am really glad you’re not one of those people who takeoff the emergency release rope and handle or a person who zip ties the trolley you really use your resources and the question is does your garage door open with that piece of wood on it and two they make a product called garage door shield and another product like you just did with a 2 x 5 or something and but it’s made out of metal and when the garage door shots at locks together but still a very great video
