  • I take the dogs on hikes along the Rio Penasco in the Lincoln National Forest of the Sacramento Mountains in southern New Mexico, near the village of Cloudcroft (elevation about 9000 ft). If you've ever wished to leave the city, do it as fast as you can. I discuss that in the video. Plus, did you know that cows kill more people yearly than cougars, bears, coyotes and wolves? They do. If you're walking with your dogs, cattle see the dogs as a threat, leashed or not. Give cattle a wide berth. Always. Should they charge, let your dogs off the leash because dogs out run them and cattle will focus their charge on the dogs, not on you. I make sure we don't get charged.
Again, it's dry up here. Campfires and charcoal grills are forbidden. Right now, fire danger around Cloudcroft and all through the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico is High.

Land or housing in Cloudcroft is pretty expensive . Timberon is cheaper. Look into that before you buy, would be my suggestion.

Thank you. When you visit, get a Mountain Monthly news paper from Allsups (it is the local paper, comes out once a month.) They list a lot of real estate in it. I've seen land for sale in there before. Lots for sale too. If you want to not be restricted by Cloudcroft village rules, getting land or a lot outside of the village limits is my suggestion. But if you wish to be within walking distance to things, then in the village. There are some sections that sell lots.

Yes, Timberon is less expensive. It's lower elevation. A long drive from Cloudcroft. I need to take the trash in and it's such a gorgeous day today I may take the dogs out for a drive to Timberon. A couple of weeks ago I drove us out beyond Pinon. Just depends on how much land you need Leliu. In Cloudcroft, the land for sale is really lots for sale. Outside the village limits is where you can get a large portion of land.

Do you have good WiFi? I’d love to live there. I work from home, so definitely need good WiFi service?

Hi Sherry, yes I have good internet. I live in a cell dead zone. So I watch TV, do computer via Ethernet cable plugged into the Internet router.
Provider is Tularosa Basin Telephone Company.
      It's fiber optic.
Some areas near Cloudcroft aren't served by TBTC. Instead they have PVT.
It isn't fiber optic. Much slower.
Some areas use Starlink, which they say is fast.
I usually keep my wi-fi off, connecting hard wired Ethernet to router, but the occasional times I turn on the wifi, it is fast.
This said, it isn't as fast as the city and is almost twice the cost.

How long have you lived in Cloudcroft ?

When I was four years old, I began vacationing in Cloudcroft, where I fell in love with wildlife, nature and simplicity. Then in the 1980s, my late husband and I bought our own cabin up here, spending as much time here as we could. Finally free to live anywhere I wished, I moved up here full time in 2018.
