it might be that a character that has it coming has more agency than a character that is just a victim. If they know why it's happening they likely brought on the circumstances that created the horror through choices they made. It could be that the sense of agency increases the horror for a few reasons. The horror could have been avoided had the character made a different decision, and the character, through their choices, becomes a participant in the horror happening to them. But idk, what do y'all think?
Only a few mins into the vid but thank you sm for speaking up 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸 literally brightened my morning to hear your advocacy for the Palestinian cause. SFF writers have such power because SFF itself is such a massive tool for empathy and I carry this responsibility as a poc SFF writer myself and seeing others on booktok and booktube not share it has been v frustrating
Omg I’ve never been this early I have just recently got into this channel and I’ve binged everything you have. You are my comfort channel and inspire me in so much ways to finally start writing my first novel and while I’m not going to do traditional publishing because I am quite young I will be posting it online. Keep up the great work and you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber. ❤
thank you very much for the support! Follow whatever path speaks to you, I also started out as a younger writer by posting online and it helped me grow so much!
I’m a newbie to horror writing. I think my novel WIP will be YA horror instead of Adult horror like I originally thought. But the basic idea is something I’m adapting from a horror TV pilot I wrote. I am in the early stages of drafting the novel. Thank you for your insight! 💜📝 I love THE HACIENDA and VAMPIRES OF EL NORTE both written by Isabel Canas! I love Gothic horror.
haha I'm very new to it, but I love it!! (also highly recommend checking out RachelWrites, ShaelinWrites, Kelley Tai, and Kris MF if you haven't already, they know way more than me!)
Love that your speaking out for Palestine #FreePalestine #FreeGaza ❤ also love your videos, they’re all amazing, I actually learn so much from them and so intrigued and interested in your writing and advice 👌🏻💯 Please carry on making them, I pray that your upcoming days are filled with joy and happiness and May good things and blessings be sent your way 🙌🏻
There's this book that totally threw me for a loop I had never been so surprised by a twist in a book before: The Last House On Needless Street by Catriona Ward
A year after you posting this video and the war over there has reached a peak. That part of the world has been at war with itself for thousands of years. It's a religious war where both sides worship the same god and are now fighting over nonsense. I appreciate your information on writing horror.
thank you for speaking up about it and sharing the links! one YA horror i recommend is 'look for me by moonlight' by mary downing hahn. i read it during a storm, while my house had a power cut. and it was delicious.
great video and insights! btw can anyone make like a summarized/nutshell list of each bulletpoint tho like a pinned commenter did in the last video so i can write it down? i have auditory processing issues and can't process + retain info given verbally to where i can notetake them for reference when practice writing
1) utilize primal senses like touch and taste to create a sense of unease. Also, mix senses or write unexpected sensory details, eg. an attractive woman smelling like rotten meat. 2) make the situation of the horror personal to the POV character, giving them a personal stake in the conflict. you could possibly make it so that the protagonist 'had it coming' in some way 3) use environmental cues to foster ambiance! strange noises, sudden silence, and general unknown elements in your surroundings. 4) turn your main character into the monster, or have them turn out to be the monster all along. 5) keep your story short and sweet-horror thrives in short form fiction! 6) make your characters experience small physical discomfort, eg. mosquito bites, sweat and extreme temperatures, etc. relatable details allow the reader to root themselves in the PoV character's body 7) write an ironic voice, or a sassy narrator. when the big 'oh sh*t' moment comes, the narrator's voice can shift from uncaring to frightened, making the moment even more jarring! 8) tighten your PoV, make your story intimate. really close third person or first person narration can make for a really strong horror story.
True-crime is a whole genre of thriller non-fiction. There's also plenty of supernatural stories based off of real events if you're into hauntings and possessions
Ok hi everyone- I need some opinions on a story I am thinking of writing and I am trying to learn how to write horror for this story and i am bad at it- i only used to write cringe romance that are so bad- .. so please be patient 🥲 The story in a nutshell: Police officer is interrogating a woman who is an ex police officer who stabbed a man. The man is in the hospital. The woman tells the police officer to find a diary in her apartment. The diary belongs to an escaped victim of a serial killer on the run. It's a technique for therapy reasons yk like a journal. The officer finds it. Starts reading it. The diary is mostly her just writing her days with small glimps of her being paranoid from everything. I will add a story of the officer's personal life. A part of the diary is the victim mentioning problems with SH and her su1cide. The officer panicks . The officer notices there are still a few written pages in the diary. She reads them . Notices the difference in the handwriting. A new part of the diary Written by the officer who is looking into the case of the victim. Realizing it's the same ex officer who she is interrogating. The officer in the diary was trying to figure out who the killer is. But ends up going crazy, fired, stalking the killer and attacking him bc she felt so enraged by him. The main character ( first officer) realizes the man in the hospital is a serial killer. And goes to the hospital to catch him. He is not in the bed. He is following her. And then he either kills her or he gets caught. Still trying to figure out which one to do. Now 1. Is this a good story idea?? 2.Should I add an intro with the officer being chased off and then the start of the story is the interrogating part?? 3.should I focus on the side story of the officer's personal life ? To make mood changes from reading the diary of a traumatized victim to the life of a workaholic divorced mom? 4. Should should i make the man in the hospital forgotten in the story to give the chills of " we didn't know he was important " or should i add in some parts of the officer interrogating his neighbors and friends to make him seem innocent enough? 5. I really want to make the readers mix things up so should i add in suspects of a different attack ? Or should i make it seem like the man in the hospital isn't really the killer. I really am sorry for the long paragraph but I am in deep thinking about this and I want the story to be good 🥲
Thank you so much for bringing up Palestine. Palestine is one of my life's great loves, and the people I know there and from there are some of the best I've ever known. They don't deserve what's happening. No one does. 💔♥️🇵🇸🍉
5,791 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7, including 2,360 children. I'm glad you're brave enough to speak up.
What a hero lmao
this is a horrifying metric to look at now lmao

I think this is a really solid point! a less helpless, more competent character being overwhelmed could be more relatable
🇵🇸 Thank you for spreading the awareness!!
I'm not a horror writer either but omg I'm getting spooked listening to your examples!!!
