- Should you go to Isle Royale We take you through the Challenges to make your trip to Isle Royale happen should you choose to go! This is the least visited National Park in the lower 48 of the United States. Though that is true, it is also the most revisited for its backcountry adventure. This National Park has extreme limited access via boat or sea plane thus making it not the easiest place to go. The limited access adds to both the opportunity and cost associated with getting to this park.
The shear remoteness of the park requires that you pack in and pack out all essential items and if staying over night all your camping necessities.
A very popular option is the one day visit where you have a limited number of hours on the island to hike explore, animal watch etc and return to the main land at the end of the day. We opted to do a day tour to the island and it was a great adventure for sure. We will caution of the the challenges is the weather as Isle Royale gets 20-40 inches of rain per year and the rainy season is the summer time when we chose to go there. We did encounter rain and we strongly recommend wet weather gear, and layers as the temperature varied dramatically throughout our day on the island.
This National Park is famous for its wildlife, moose, wolf, red fox etc and though we did not see any on our trip we were still pleasantly satisfied with the experience and beauty of this park.

I'm so glad you did this video... I have never heard of Isle Royale. Definitely a place I want to check out now. Great tip about the time zone change... good to know for sure. And, congratulations on making it to 5K... Yay!! 😊😊😊
A lot of people have never heard of this park. A unique experience. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
Great tips. We want to visit Isle Royale National Park, so thank you sharing your visit.
Thank you so much for watching. Next time I want to spend the night on the island.
I had forgotten about this National Park. 2 1/2 hours wasn’t long to enjoy the park. Looks like a beautiful hike. Great tips.
It was definitely not enough time to spend on the island.
Very useful information for a first time visit. Thank you.
Thank you so much for watching.
Wonderful information...fun adventure... Thanks 😊✌️
Thank you.
The tone zone comment was the best nugget of info I got out of your video.
I hadn't consider that, read or heard of the time zone factor anywhere else.
20 to 40 inches of rain primary summer is notable as well.
Appreciate the video.
Planning on going mid-August 2023 7-night backpack with my three sons.
Glad it was helpful!
1. The boat is the most reliable and safest way to travel to Isle Royal. 2. Looking at the plane in the video - this is a Cessna UF206F single engine aircraft that seats 6. Having lived in Alaska for a number of years - and traveled to places via sea plane dozens and dozens of times, I personally wouldn't fly out over Lake Superior to Isle Royal in anything less than DHC-2 Beaver or a Cessna 208 Caravan. Our Bowhead Whale Survey team flew in a Twin Otter out over the Beaufort & Chukchi Sea and if I were going to fly commercial passengers to Isle Royal - that's the plane I'd choose.
All of the logistics are what have kept us from visiting Isle Royle so far. When we go, we plan to take a ferry from Copper Harbor. I have a cousin who lives there so that probably works best for us. Thanks for sharing all of these details with us. Sorry about your phone changing time zones on you and the rain and everything. It has been such a wet spring!!! And we often deal with our phone changing to central time when we're near Lake Michigan. It's so bizarre. Congratulations on reaching 5,000 subs, though!!!
Thank you for helping us get to the "5K" mark we can not do it without folks like you supporting us along the way! Thank you TJ & Red
We had never heard of Isle Royale. We want to go check this out sometime. I love that there is this National Park that is so hard to get to that it is pristine and unseen by most people. We would probably want to bring a tent to camp overnight. Thanks for introducing us to Isle Royale!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video and learned about Isle Royale.
isle royal and lake superior ! a wild peaceful paradise! I'll be going back! 5 days this sept. more next season! i lost more than an hr. i lost myself, and, i found myself, at Scoville point!
Well then if you return to where you lost yourself, you can find a good starting point to loose yourself all over again! Thanks for watching!
Your videos are always great.
Glad you like them! We really appreciate the kind words.
Bummer you lost that hour 🤦🏻♂️ looks like an adventure you’ll remember 👍
True, just another example how we rely on technology too much LOL. Thank you for your continued support TJ & Red!
Rain, wet and cold. Yep Pearl is passing on this on, ok me too
Can't blame you. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Everyone can change the settings on their phone to prevent the phone from automatically changing time zones. I am surprised the Ranger does not cover that.
We wish they would have. Thanks for watching and commenting.
First i'll admit my bias as I love Isle Royale, but imho you weren't there long enough to really have enjoyed the park. Backpacking isn't for everyone, but it's by far the best way to experience Isle Royale.
We agree that to truly experience the park you have to spend at least one night. That's why I said that when we return it has to be an overnight stay.
Isle Royale is remote. You were daytrippers unprepared for the conditions.
I would say, underprepared for sure. no doubt. We are not normally "remote" location folks anymore. Thanks for your support!
I will most likely be going in June 2024
We hope you have an amazing trip! We will have to go back again one day for a bit more exploring. Thanks for watching!
Like the t-shirts and those photos behind you. Think I'll pass on that park, easier parks to access a forest. You would love Alaska.😊
Alaska is on the radar, as soon as we retire we plan to spend a summer up there in our trailer! Thank you for your support TJ & Red
And all the parks outwest 😃🏜
I have been there twice. My wife and I are going in September. For 7 days hike, any suggestions.
m
Greenstone trail, or Do the feldtman loop, but pick up greenstone trail at Island mine.
I'm going in mid-August 7-nights backpack with my three sons.
By September should be far fewer mosquitos, still Deet or something similar.
Considering camp shoes/sandals to give feet more opportunity to dry out.
I'm going to guess that TJ is a Gemini and Red is an Aries.
Right on Red but way off on TJ ♎
Not the islands fault, just piss poor planing
In 2005, I took the boat from Grand Portage to Windigo. I was one of 3 people on the boat. With only 2.5 hours there, I missed the boat back. I was completely unaware of the time zone crossing. I was so baffled, thinking I was at the dock early. Additionally, no one was at the ranger station. The mosquitoes were so bad, I decided to just keep moving and hike through the night to the fire tower at the middle of the island. It was 20+ miles, hiking in the dark, thinking about wolves and moose the whole time. I made it to the tower, and climbed up to escape the mosquitoes. Problem was, it was so cold and windy on the tower, and it was made of angled steel, I couldn't sleep there. I stayed awake until sunrise and started to hike back. I got so sleepy that I just layed down next to the trail. It was sunny and not one person came down that trail all day. I slept so long that by the time I got back to Windigo, I had missed the boat again! Embarrassed, I found a ranger this time, who gave me some trail mix and sent me to a lean-to to spend an unintened second night there. On the third day, I just stayed near the dock, eager to leave. My 2.5 hour trip turned into 2.5 days!
Wow! I can totally see how that could happen. That was quite an experience for you. Very scary.
Wusses.
HAHAHA thats what my Drill Instructor in Paris Island used to say up to the day they called me a US Marine LOL...... We foolishly did not prepare with the correct gear for the weather. We plan to return one day for a better adventure. Thanks for the support.
