After discovering the rear corner of the BMW E70 X5 lower on one side than the other, it was time to take action. Research suggested a worn out airbag so I proceeded to purchase a new set and am sharing the complete very detailed step by step procedure for installing new self levelling suspension air components. I include tools that are needed and talk about the safety required for this installation.

I really appreciate this video. When my rear left air spring died I didn't know anything, so I paid $550 to have it done at a shop. After watching this video, I was able to buy the replacement air spring for $100 and do it myself in about 2 hours. Very helpful video.

God bless people like you brother! Not many of us can afford to keep these 4wd on the road. By you sharing your videos we are saving alot of money. These airbags to get it fix bmw were charging me $2000 parts and labour. I only spent about $120 on airbags and I installed it myself with your help. It was sooo easy! Thank you thank you thank you!!! Looking foward seeing more videos 👏👏👏🤝🤝🤝

Thanks so much! Couple snags I ran into. BMW engineers are 😵‍💫🤪🥴! They left no extra length on the air lines. 🤦‍♂️ So if you remove it from the clamp right on wheel well on the passenger rear, it allows you a little extra line to find the notches. Then clamp it back. Then, put a jack under the wheel and raise it up til the bottom clicks into place. Last, if you purchase Arnott brand, you will need to hollow out the line guide for the red line side. It WILL NOT snap into the top!
Again, thank you so much for making this video. It really helped me!

Great Video! thank you for doing it. - Just some tips for the next person doing this, If your airbags full deflated, I disconnected the battery and poked a hole in bag to ensure no air was left. Saved the trouble to disconnect the lines from the pump. - I reused the washer and nut that was already on there as why replace it if no current issues. I did notice my airbag did have a brass female fitting inside, vs old bag had none. It was a a bit of a struggle to get the bottom to clip in to place, I got it about 75% in and once the airbag inflated went into place nicely!

Thanks for the video. It is very helpful. I replaced my leaking E70 X535D airbag but the compressor isn't running while the car is jacked up. I do not want to lower it down as the instruction said that's a bad idea. Do you know if I need to lower my car in order to activate the compressor pump/leveling sensor or it should be able to pump the air into those airbags while the car is jacked. Could that be a bad compressor because we are driving it for 5 hours while the air suspension broke (we got no choice because it was midnight and we are driving from Vegas to Salt Lake City? I also read so forum posts, the compressor unit shuts itself off to avoid overwork when it detects zero pressure. Please let me know. Thanks much

Just did this job. Thanks for the video. I changed the old bags (not my ex wives. Lol) with the Arnott ones. Made in Florida and Look like well built product if anyone is looking. One thing I would consider is not purging the air at the pump but doing it at the bag since you gonna have to take off the line there anyway. Just a thought but otherwise thanks again. Did both sides for $400 bucks with Amazon. Would have been $2k easy at the shop.

  • @ulrak

Level control system malfunction warning light came on. I turned the car off and turned it back on, the warning went away. Drove for 20 miles and it did not come back. I did not notice any symptoms. Although the car appears to sag on the rear when parked overnight. What seems to be the problem? I was planning to just replace the airbags since my current ones look old and worn upon visually inspecting it.

Better to jack on the rear diff (not the cover) or the main part of the rear crossmember, and then put jack stands under the rear jack points. Best to use flat top jack stands with BMW jack adapters too so you don't tear up the plastic jack points.

Yea you can do that or you can disconnect the battery and just cut the air bags with a knife and they will deflate. Doing it properly like in this video isnt difficult but it takes more time removing the panels and getting to the lines then it does to swap the bags.

I haven’t got a code or error message yet, but one side is sagging. I think I’m gonna get a couple of air springs off eBay. Looks like they’re about $120 CAD for a pair. Think I should wait for the error first? Also wondering if you got a ‘high battery drain’ message during the time yours was sagging. I’m getting that error and wondering if it’s the compressor doing overtime? Thanks!

Never done one before, but watching you do it made me think a couple more things might help get the job done. First, some silicone spray, loads of different brands out there but it'll help snap those pipes in and help get that top gaiter on if reusing it, which seems a good idea to me. Second thing would be to perhaps use a jack to lift the axle a bit when trying to get the bottom of the airbag snapped home, you look like you had to use some muscle to stretch it down to the locating point. Just an idea ;)

Is it a must to disconnect the battery and also the red/blue and electrical from the compressor underneath the x5?... or can I just make sure that I don't touch the key or open the doors to avoid activating the vehicle's compressor? Thanks for your time.

    • @ECPP

I would recommend disconnecting the battery but the blue and red lines may not be necessary if you slowly untighten each side bag to release pressure gradually.

I have the same car same year (35d) and the right shock exploded few min ago. The ones you installed are Arnnot? or did you go for the less expensive ones? Great vid!

P38 range rover (1999) has airbags, but you have 4 height settings at the press of a button. Where is the height buttons in the X5? For example, drop it on the ground for parking so you can get in at low height, and car raises when you get in, or is this not an option on X5?

hi, cannot be done on the E70/E71. Would require some work to be programmed.

Great video! You inspired me to give this a go and it was interesting...
    - I have a 2008 3.0 X5 7 seater from BC, Canada
    - bought the airbags off ebay from chassis_tech, about $100 CAD for the pair (probably my first clue I’d have issues but they have an average 5* review of thousands of reviews)
    - the 7 seater space is tight for this repair; realized after that you can pull down on the hub to extend the shock and create more space - after battling with it for over an hour...
    - installed the air shock after a lot of cursing to maneuver it in the tight space, and with the sweat of frustration dripping in my eyes trying to lock it in, I realized I’m an idiot and clockwise from the top view is counterclockwise from underneath... newbie
    - had trouble locking the bottom in - figured out to pull from the top of the airbag, not the bottom
    - here was the fun part - put the tire back on, lowered it until the tire was bearing most of the weight as I read somewhere not to inflate with full weight of car for first time, then turned on the car to start the compressor, filled the bag, thought all was well, then jacked again to put compressor cover back on (probably a rookie move) Bang! The airbag pops out of the bottom hole because the cheap POS has clips smaller than OEM and didn’t lock in. Put some unwanted ruts in the plastic of the airbag when it hit the strut and now I don’t think I can trust it.
    - installed the 2nd one on the same side as I bought 2 (didn’t rejack this time and instead just shaved my forehead trying to put the cover back on), seemed to be fine but I checked today (2 days later) and the new bag is resting against the body wall whereas the original on the other side has about a cm separation. Doubt that’s good so I’m gonna have to get back in there and see why it’s not straight
    - frustrated...
    - anyway, not sure if any of this novel helps anyone but thought I’d share. Noticed today as well that the other side is low so I’ll have to order another one. Doesn’t seem like Suncore is great?

    • @gilgonzalez5902

You need the compressor? Or just the air bags? The air bags are what go flat, the compressor having an issue is rare.
