The Cooke Duet were husband and wife Hubert and Jeanette (Freeman) Cooke. They were based in Wise, VA and began their music partnership in 1962. Hubert Cooke worked as a coal miner until the mid-1960s, when he turned to ministering (as well as a greater focus on his music career). (Hubert Cooke’s younger brother and fellow musician, Jack Cooke, gained fame for his mayorship of Norton, VA.) With a steady addition of children in the act, the Cooke Duet changed their performing name a couple of times; in 1972 they became the Cooke Duet and Sons and in 1974 they rebranded themselves as the Singing Cookes. I’ve heard it said that Jeanette Cooke’s soaring vocals peeled paint off walls, and I can’t refute that claim. I created a TH-cam Playlist with a pair of favorite tracks from each of the Cooke Duet’s first 5 albums, spanning the years 1967-1971, plus 2 additional cuts from their 1967 eponymous debut album (a great cover of the Carter Family’s “Sweet Heaven In My View,” and Hubert Cooke’s composition “There Must Be A Power”). Those 2 bonus tracks also appear on the must-own anthology album “Early Cooke Duet” (Freeland Recording Company FRC-CD-647, 1996).
