As a poor Walmart worker in Oklahoma with no education I decided that I would save all of my money to invest in truck driving school. After I got my CDL I drove a truck for an outstanding company that I did alot of research on and after six months I quit because I had used all that money that I saved while being on the road constantly to own an ecommerce store and move to Hawaii.
Now I have a nice apartment, a jeep, a growing buisness and I have the time to enjoy the nature around me.

I had a coworker who was 22 years old and lived with his mother. He got $80,000 in an accident settlement. We all told him to buy a studio co-op apartment in Queens, but he bought a Mercedes. Years passed, the Mercedes depreciated in value, and he still lived with his mom. The co-ops in Queens tripled in value.

One thing I notice that is different from when I was a young person is no one seems to bring their own coffee and lunch from home to work. When I was younger, everyone from the vice president on down the ranks brought their lunch and/or their coffee, myself included. Once in a great while we would go out to lunch as a treat, but only as a fun thing for coworkers to do together.
Even one year of this, especially with the rise of very expensive coffees and food at restaurants, will save literally thousands of dollars. But whenever I've advised young people today to do this, they all say, "I shouldn't have to do that," as though it were a shameful thing or a terrible deprivation.

Max out your 401 K, you won't miss it, by a 5 year old car drive to the wheels off, keep your car clean and change oil everytime, buy Honda Toyota Nissan they just don't break , rent a small apartment in the best NEIGHBORHOOD, don't miss payments on anything, food at a discount food store, buy only canned food that is generic, walk more than you drive, put a sign up at your company for ride sharing, go to free concerts in your parks, one drink when you go out find happy hour for free food, if you don't have to use your car WALK, Walk very fast to get your cardio in , yard sale to get more cash, iron your outfits to look sharp, ask your boss if you could do something to make their lives easier, no eating out is a waste of money, don't use your A/C only when you have to, keep your thermostat at 79 degrees you'll get use to it. I needed a waterproof coat, but the only one I could find (because it was off season, and this was years before internet shopping) was extremely serviceable but a blah color. It had the most workable and pickpocket proof pockets.
Anyway, I was talking about this jacket with a guy who had been in the British army, commenting how dull this coat was. He told me how awesome that was, because it means you don't stick out, and you're less likely to be targeted as someone to be a victim of crime.
As I've become wealthier, I realized how right he was. There are places you need to dress for success. The majority of places it's best to underdress, and not mark yourself out as special, well off, or an easy mark.

Thanks for the bonus tip #16. I see so many people who aren't exactly well off or even doing well ,for that matter, but they HAVE TO HAVE the most expensive name brands in everything they purchase. Some people are so obsessed with wanting certain name brands they'll go as far as to steal it. I'm referring to tech, apparel, food, automobiles, etc. Meanwhile they're making those lines of products wealthier as they keep raising their prices. As these companies raise their prices they lower the quality and in many items they've reduced size or portions while charging more. These brands need taken down a notch and the best way to get the message to them is to boycott their product. Also, stop buying goods made in China, you're adding to their strength when you do.

Many years ago I was told " pay yourself first " and the money however small or large will grow over time and it has worked wonders over the years. There's an exercise. For 3 months [non-holiday or vacation season] track your expenses. I recommend: "150+ Expense Tracking Categories to Help You Track Your Finances". Nearly everyone screws up tracking the 1st month by 50%, but don't get despondent. Prior to the 2nd month figure out what you forgot to track in the 1st month, then begin the 2nd month. Don't worry, most people are off by 25% in the 2nd attempt. Look back and try to figure out what you're missing. Now try to track your expenses for a 3rd month; usually most people have some good data by the 3rd try. Now focus, look at the data, look at the numbers, what are you spending money on and what can you do differently. If you wish to cut back, you must be willing to be honest with yourself; every penny or dollar counts. Then you need to save that money, without touching it, then comes the next challenge - how to make that money work for you; personally I invest. But you must learn about controlling emotions.

You are damn right about the amount of shade, hardly subtle, but then so was the level of ignorance these guys have... they aren't talking about the poor! Poor people even in 1st world countries, can't afford to get their hair or nails done!!! People in my country have their basic health needs covered bar dental or optical (still basic in my mind but...) If I don't get my teeth seen to, it's not because I'm dumb enough to think the problem won't get worse 🙄 it's because cosmetics are a want not a need and when your kids need food school items or bills have to be paid, your own dental needs come in second. Most of this was excellent info for the middle classes, and unrealistic and insulting for the genuinely poorer classes. The wealthy are once again living in la la land.

  • @cariwaldick4898
    @cariwaldick4898 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I think when you're poor, or even middle class, you adopt a mindset that you're NEVER going to be rich. Most people don't know what it's like NOT to struggle, or be a paycheck away from losing everything. Even middle class people are one disaster away from slipping into poverty. If you feel you can't break out, then there's no reason to change your spending habits. Gambling/lottery gives you hope that you might strike it rich--which is likely the only chance some believe they've got.
Many people feel the system is rigged, and you have to be born to wealth to have a shot at that life. Even if you can do everything right, unless you have family wealth, you aren't going to amass much, without some extraordinary luck--like hitting on an investment that takes off. With this in mind, people subconsciously decide to live their best lives, enjoy what they have, and let tomorrow take care of itself.
It's a choice. Living it up today can be fun, but that comes at a cost of never being able to retire, or having a retirement so lean you become a burden to your family. Scrimping today gives you security, but then your family comes to you when things go bad. Even if you live modestly, you can still lose everything, through uncovered medical expenses, lawsuits, bad investments, natural disasters, theft/embezzlement, or family grift.

About donating to charity: without paying salaries, there wouldn't be a charity. And if they can't pay a decent salary, then they have to hire a poor quality person, and then your money definitely doesn't go as far. There is an entire TED or TEDx talk on this mentality that explains why charities aren't able to compete with businesses and make as much impact. Same with stigmatizing fundraising.

Well, charity is actually the only spending category that makes people happy in a long term. Everyone can do it. But like any spending charity support cannot be living beyond one's means. If one can afford reasonable charity, do it. If it would mean living beyond your means then first increase your earnings and savings and then do charity. Plus some charity might mean saving your house from being cluttered. This also saves you money, so why not to do it? I do charity. I like it. But I do not do it in a reckless manner. I think about consequences of charity for me and for those whom I'm trying to help in this way.

$6.88 for a packet of cigarettes in the USA? In Australia, I think a pack of 25 costs about $40.00, although I'm not sure because I'm a non-smoker. Excise tax on cigarettes has always been high in Australia. It's a good way of hopefully supressing consumption, and it is fair to tax heavily a product which adds significant burdens to the health system. The USA should follow suit.

It would be a good way of raising revenue and suppressing consumption of a deadly product. In Australia, the federal government has jurisdiction over customs and excise, and almost every federal budget raises excise taxes on beer, wine and tobacco products Perhaps the states have jurisdiction over excise in the USA, I really don't know. If it is the states, then they should move to progressively raise taxes on tobacco products.

As for the China comment, I don’t think you realize why there are poor people in the US. What’s minimum wage now? $7.25/hr? It was $6.25 then. Winning $20 is theoretically 3 hours pay. Of course, the government still taxes your income, and technically should be taxing your lottery winnings as well. Imagine making $7/hr in our “great nation.” If you’re lucky enough to work 40 hours, which none of these people did, you’d make $290 a week at the minimum wage of $7.25. Of course, taxes are deducted directly from your paycheck, so you don’t actually ever see $290, but let’s go ahead and say it is. That’s $1160 a month. That’s not considered below poverty. Let’s say you manage to find a hovel that’s will rent to you at $700/mo, now you have $460 for food, utilities, and so on. But then you go blow a large chunk of your weekly paycheck on lottery scratch offs. But no place in town offers rent that low, and if they did, you’d be too high of a risk. I knew two people who lived together in a neighboring poorer town, who had a monthly rate at a hotel! Every day they walked to our town for work because they couldn’t afford a car and there was no public transit.
These people were/couldn’t work full time. In fact, even places that have the ability, try to ensure you don’t so they don’t have to pay benefits like insurance and overtime. So these people weren’t making anywhere close to what I speak of. Almost none of the people I knew who did this had their own place. They were living with relatives or had done other kind of assistance. God... ...one of them told me their boyfriend had left them, and then 3 months later, she found out she was pregnant! I mean, come on people! China.?.. ...get real.

I disagree with #14. Poor people pay more taxes because they don't have the power to lobby Congress for tax breaks. They also don't have the money to pay for legal advice on how to dodge taxes. It has nothing to do with how much value people produce. If taxes were a function of the value a person produces, then that would mean people on welfare produce the most value.
