This woman's column meant everything to me when I was growing up in a let's say less than ideal household. Her words gave me hope and a vision of a future that I could create for myself. I will always be grateful to her.
Ditto! The magazine hasn't been the same since she left. I tried to hold on but after getting the last issue with Usher laid out spread eagle in his tight drawers, I don't need them issues! I am canceling my subscription!!!!!
Amen she was uplifting to me and glad to be apart of the journey. Now I’m 71 and she is so beautiful and grace has given her so much wisdom along with beauty.. God Bless 👏🏽👏🏽🙏🏾
Susan Taylor is a woman who allowed the Holy Spirit to guide her life. She found her purpose in Christ and shared it with the world. Ministry is not always in the pulpit🙏🏽❤️🌹 Thank you.
Me too, Essence was everything ❤ bought every issue since I was a young girl. It broke my heart when she left. I literally spent thousands. I have 1 issue with Whitney on the cover❤
Actually, it was a quiet hostile takeover by Time Warner Group. I didn't find out about it until I read about it 3 months after it took place in Black Enterprise.
PTL Sherri…you have taken this time slot to a place never imagined! I am thoroughly enjoying this particular segment. Her voice and energy is so serene 💯💌!
Susan Taylor's "In the Spirit" was life changing for me 💕 I recall working in hostile, racist environments. I would read her articles in Essence magazine on my lunch breaks and it always uplifted me. I knew I was worthy 🙏🏾 Such a beautiful soul 🌹
Susan, I subscribed to Essence magazine because of you!!!!! I'm grateful that you're alive and still here!!!! Thank you so much and may the Creator richly bless you!!!!
Love Susan L Taylor! Seeing Her Brings Tears Of Joy! I Read IN THE Spirit At A Time I Needed It The Most As A Young Woman/ Mother! Now As A Middle Aged Woman And Mom I Still Reflect Back To Her Words OF Wisdom!❤️
Her words really spoke to me and I tell people all the time that my life changed when I started to allow god to be good. Now my circumstances didn’t change or night but my mind was forever changed from that moment. Of course as my mind got stronger, the situation improved!
Sheri, you keep giving us icons and gems!! This generation needs to see this!! Susan still looks amazing! I remember my mom buying every issue, and I followed!! Essence stood for beauty, integrity, and stories about us!! They should never let this hard work go under.
She looks & carries herself like a lady. I don't know why most black women today insist on the opposite. Acting a fool, twerking. Showing too much skin.. chile ..
I love her. In a speech over 30 years ago, she gave me some advice that I remember today. She is the real deal. I love her spirit. Her voice is soothing. Her knowledge inspiring. Her presence is the warmth that a soul hungers for. She is joy!
I wanted to be like her when I was a teenager in college kept most of her columns pasted on my dorm wall. I do so admire and adore Susan L Taylor 💐💐💐💐 still have her books
I too loved this feature of the Essence magazine, I recall going straight to the back page to get my uplifting message. It was seeds of encouragement that was being planted. I was thrilled when Ms. Taylor wrote her books, they became part of my library. I’m delighted that she was featured in the spotlight. May God continue to bless her legacy of love and encouragement to others. Thank you for being a role model of excellence and perseverance, most of all thank you for INTHE SPIRIT❤️💕❤️💞❤️💕💕❤️💞❤️💕💕
OMG!! Thank you so much for this. It was like a breath of fresh air to see her again looking just as she always was and walking like she's floating on air!!
Susan Taylor’s editorial was a great inspiration to me as a young mother. When my daughter went off to college in 1988 I presented her an entire collection which I had saved for all those years. Years later when my daughter graduated she presented me with a copy of “In The Spirit” the inspirational writings of Susan Taylor published in 1993.
Oh, how happy I was to hear her speak again. She holds a dear place in my heart. I could not wait for those columns in Essence as a young woman!!! I remember she said once that when people show you who they are, believe them!!! I took that advice to heart and it has saved me many times. I wonder if she truly realizes the strength of her legacy. I pray blessings over her and offer her my thanks and gratitude.

Back in the day when people read magazines vs smartphones, my ritual involved immersing myself in the pages of Essence, with Susan L. Taylor's editorial serving as the pièce de résistance, saved for the final indulgence. Her words were more than just commentary; they were a guiding light, shaping my perspectives and inspiring me to greater heights. It was a stroke of fortune that brought me to Eso Won books in Los Angeles some three decades ago, where Susan L. Taylor graced us with her presence during a book signing event for her esteemed publication, "In the Spirit: The Inspirational Writings of Susan L. Taylor," released in 1993. Meeting her in person was an experience beyond compare. She exuded a rare combination of beauty, kindness, and elegance, embodying the very essence of class we had all come to associate with her. Her signature adorns the pages of my cherished book, a timeless keepsake that has remained in my possession to this day, holding a special place in my heart.

I was there at that same conference in 1992 where Iyanla Vanzant spoke at Susan's recommendation. Susan is still as regal as ever. I adore this awesome lady and love hearing her speak. She represents the best of all of us.
