So I tied this along with this video last night. I went out for an hour to a river I live close to, that's very heavily fished today. In fact all of my normal spots were taken by typical out of staters and I did get to hit one deep hole that's eluded me several times. After not seeing top hits for a while I decided to put this tie on. Holy cow! I didn't land it but had one of the biggest trout on for a few seconds, yes I lost it but it really put faith in this pattern and I can't wait to try it more often. Thanks for the great recipe instructions.

I fish warm waters so the first I thought when you demonstrated its motion in the water was damn that's a good crawfish pattern!!!

Thanks! Yeah I think many people suggest wooly buggers best represent crayfish. Of course can be leeches, baitfish and even nymphs. It’s a very versatile pattern

I recently tied several of these from 2 - 1/0 in white, pink, and natural for stripers thinking the action made them more shrimp-like than a lot of the shrimp flies I had been fishing. Hooked up on the white one on my first cast and about every second or third cast thereafter. Verdict is: this pattern is a killer in all water for all species.

flies should be made like this-simple and rugged. Unlike the others where they make it too detailed and complicated. for me, fish in the water don't appreciate at all the details and they are more attracted to the movement of the flies. I doubt whether they gonna use the flies for fishing or just simply for display :) good job bro

Thank you, and I agree. The simple flies usually catch more fish. Don’t get me wrong, some of my flies are super complicated but, I rarely use them.

excellent pattern looks like a fly to try out in some our local lakes and ponds

Thanks! Yeah its a pretty good fly for lakes as well. I created it to get deep on my local river. We had something called high water a while back where the water was very fast, and very deep. I wanted to catch some large fish with a streamer, so I had to make something that gets down deep. This is what I came up with. But yes, lake fishing would be an obvious use for this fly as well. Thanks again man! :) let me know how it works out for you.

What size eyes do you use?

    • @McFlyAngler

This is a very old video I can’t remember what I used, but usually I say the size in the description section. I can not view that right now, is that information there?

@@McFlyAngler unfortunately not just lists dumbbell eyes. Just very new to this and need to buy more hooks and eyes soon, just hoping what I get are capable for one another

Check out some of my other videos, I usually list sizes. But I will say, you can go with any size really. Heavier gets down faster but is harder to cast, lighter won’t sink so fast but is easier to cast, etc. sorry this doesn’t have it, I have no exactly what size I used here, but I’d venture to guess it’s around 2.5-3.5mm. Or maybe size medium depending on the companies size measuring

Great video, very professional.I live in south Louisiana in the New Orleans area.Do you think these flies would work in the bayou's? We have bream,Sac-Au- Lait (French for Crappie) and green trout(Bass).I just started tying flies about 2 month's ago.
    Thanks

+Charlie Mutter I've never fished there but, I can't imagine it wouldn't work there. I have a friend that uses a wooly bugger for everything including saltwater fishing. It's an easy fly to tie so you can make up quite a few quickly. I have caught many species on the bugger as well including bass and crappie. Give it a try. If you tie this in white or cream, you will have a baitfish imitator. Brown/black is a crayfish imitator. Experiment and have fun.

This is just what I've been looking for. I like the action of a wooly bugger but I like it to ride hook point up. I wonder if it would work without the hackle?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Sure! More of a jig at that point. Which works for sure!

For someone who doesn’t tie flies where could I purchase a few of these? I think they would work great in the stocked streams of Iowa where I live?
