    Thank you. Finally understand how foil on boats finally works. I kept asking and no one answer, you are the only one that explained in a simple and perfect way that a novice in sailing would understand

    All this wonderful technology of foils for sailboats reminds us what an incridible genius Éric Tabarly was. This French sailor was already using foils for real ocean races decades ago !

    [1:02] So the reporter understood the concept of drag from the sail. But, for some reason, she wasn't able to understand THE EXACT same concept when applied to the hull and keel of the boat?
    So we go with friction now?

    I can barely stand on one foot, much less surf because I lack a sense of balance. How the heck do they keep these boats from tipping over? Is there some stability built into them like aircraft and conventional yachts?

    • @mightyslime4120
      @mightyslime4120 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. You just have to hike(lean on the side of the boat) in order to counter the wind pushing in the opposite direction

    Great , but contact with water disappears which in my opinion makes it 'less sailing'. OK, you go faster and it's all explainable. But for me being in and with the water makes sailing/surfing so beautiful.

    Do foils only become more efficient when they lift boats totally out the water or can they still make boats more efficient by just lifting them a little bit?

    • @TheAETHER22
      @TheAETHER22 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Stimpson My guess is as long as friction with the hull and the water doesn't happen.. But then you don't want too high or you'll get air draft

    • @RobertSzasz
      @RobertSzasz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JS-qg1ie you can get a little bit of efficiency but you really need to lift all the way out to make a significant difference. Sails and wings produce a force forward, sideways, and a torque trying to drive the sail toward the water. A foil needs to keep the boat from tipping over, and keep it from going sideways as well as lifting the hulls up.

    • @RobertSzasz

      No, not likely, at least not Ocean Liner size due the fuel to weight ratio. Additionally, foiling has the issues that you can colliding with underwater obstacles like whales, logs, ice, etc. It could be very useful for smaller applications like water taxis.

    density of air to water is not "1000 times" but 784 times....... its ok for common man like me to round it up to "a thousand" but its not ok if a man of science, or a man posting/representing science, to be largely inaccurate like that

      It's 784. 1000 kg/m^3 (water) divided by 1.275 kg/m^3 (air)yields 784. Therefore, at sea level, air is 784 times less dense than water. Expressed in another way, a volume of air at sea level has 0.1275% of the density of the same volume of water. Just look it up.

    • @styx85
