Sam. Regarding the cars on the low shipping vessels it's because the entire family lives on the boat during a big part of the year. Children have their school and education onboard with their parents as teachers. When needed they lift of the car/cars with the aft crane. Sixhaven is a nice harbour. Nice and quite, but still just a 5 min ferry trip to middle of the city center of Amsterdam.
We saw Pickled Herring in the marina this week. You've picked a fantastic place for your boat this winter. We visit this marina many times a year. The people there are so nice!
Another great Sam Holmes Sailing video update. Hard to believe it is nearly your second winter parking Pickled Herring for winter in Europe. Great job Sam and most of all Thanks for sharing!
Hi Sam Welcom to Amsterdam, I hope you have a great time here in Amsterdam. I have buy't my first sailboat (Hurley Felicity 20ft.) two weeks back. Enjoy.👍🇳🇱🇺🇲
What a great boat. The first keel boat I sailed in was a Hurley. Gave me an addiction that I can't shake 50 years later. The boats have gotten bigger though.
Welcom Sam. Have a nice stay here in my home country. Love it how you face all the challenges. I’ve learned a lot of your video’s. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations on 200K subscribers! Been following you since the LA to Hawaii voyage. You always brighten my day with your positive nature and adventures:)
Hey Sam! Thanks for all your videos! I just got myself a 1969 Gulf Coast 20 yesterday and soon I’m gonna be cruising the Gulf! I’ve been watching your videos since 2021 and I’ve been slowly working my way up to a bigger boat. Started with a kayak I sailed in Florida, then a Super Snark modified to fit windsurfing sails for a month out here in Texas, and now my 20 ft fractional sloop with a swing keel and a 9” draft! I’m ecstatic! Thanks for giving me the sailing bug!
I’m still sailing sunfish and my main boat, a Zuma. I really hope I graduate to this if I can ever retire. Would love to be out doing this with my wife someday. Ahhh dreams…
Great to see so much of my neighbourhood in this video. I always wondered how busy it gets out there. Looks like there are lots of things to run into and plenty of opportunities to get run down.
Welcome in my chosen hometown. About the channel 31, it’s really mostly used for marinas. Bridges and locks use channels that are accessible. Maybe I stop by the boat to have a look :-) mine is now in hibernation.
Modern day vhf radios are generally efficient either had held or fixed in the nav position. It’s especially capable if you make a co-ax extension link from hand held into the mast head antenna. I sail and would not venture from bank or shore without my radios. Phil, radio ham.🇬🇧
Fun to see you arrive in Amsterdam by small boat... I had a great time there arriving by plane and train! Really enjoyed a few other places to - Eindhoven, Rotterdam, The Hague... Great country - nice, low key people, and everything seemed to work very well, which seems remarkable considering the natural challenges of it's location and geography. I want to go back!
Hi Sam, funny to see you in 'my backyard' ... i live close to Amsterdam. My 1978 HallbergRassy 31ft is in a harbor in Monnickendam. I case you need someone to monitor pickled herring over the winter, let me know. Happy to check it once every few weeks or in case a storm approaches, etc.
Congratulations, Sam...200k subs. 🎉🎉 Who’d a thought, a simple boat , a pretty basic, but innovative guy, no bikini babes....Thank you for the sailing and go for it attitude... The Hobie 16 to the Bahamas framed you perfectly...although there was a bikini in that one!😂😂😂But she was cool and just as adventurous as you! Well done, Sam!!👍👍
Welcome to the Netherlands. hope your stay here is a memorable one . A fun fact, the canal from IJmuiden to Amsterdam was dug by hand between 1865 and 1876 and is called the North Sea Canal.
OMG! 3years ago i always watch your channel and thinking how i wish i can travel like you due to pandemic in my country we were lock out for 2years. now i am in amsterdam too sailing sailing european rivers from amsterdam to Basel. i hope i can meet you im a Big fan of yours.
Hi Sam. I'm surprised you did't get more stick for the 'just use your mobile' comment! I'd never cross the channel without DSC VHF, it also identifies who and what you are when in the TSS and you have to call another vessel but you know that. Have a quiet winter.
@@samholmessailing We have, that's why we weren't run down by a bulker and I'm alive enough to watch youtube videos. Also, your boat will be held in New Zealand until you fit one. Mobile services cut out 25 miles offshore, but a ship can pass on messages and alert coastguards. You may also save someone elses life if you are close and hear an SOS on ch16. Otherwise, don't have one and let them drown. Finally you use an AIS alarm which requires a vhf transmission and receiver. I know Josh Slocum never had no radio or life jacket either. Where ever did he get to?
Did you read what happened to the guy who drove his pleasure boat the wrong direction on one of those in the UK. Fined £13,000 plus costs. Apparently more than his boat cost.
I think people that do not go to sea do not appreciate that the seas are being littered by these things. They go horizon to horizon blocking access, changing air streams and you might be suprised to find that when they reach end of life they are left where they are forever because it costs too much to remove them. Bet you wouldn't want one or two in your street. There are many forms of pollution, invisible, but also the kind you can't unsee.
Was sailing around Nederland last month. With my Albin Vega. Nice to see your video. Its reminds me my little journey. Den helder to Ijmuiden to Amsterdam to Enkhuizen to Medemblik to Den Oever and back to Den helder. Enkhuizen en Medemblik (RECOMMENDED) place to go !
Cheers Sam, loved it. IMHO VHF can be very useful between vessels when out of range of cell towers, and I always think it will be handy in my liferaft or lifejacket to speak to the guy flying the whirlygig in the sky or the captain of the enormous ship to windward, in the unlikely event an occasion occurs. Just saying :-)
We got buzzed by a big grey aircraft when about 18 miles off shore. We heard nothing. Then we got buzzed again. This time our radio almost blew out the wall, telling us it was Border Security and that we must identify ourselves. How it went full volume is a mystery only kown to Border Security. They then in no uncertain terms told us it was an offence to not respond.
I agree with skaraborgcraft by the way. A marine VHF is a crucial survival tool at sea, for both your vessel and others. You also need to be able to communicate with shipping around you to report navigational hazards to prevent accidents at sea fom flotsam and jetsom such as shipping containers or derelict vessels etc not to mention piracy and other marine crimes.
Hey Sam, i have been living in Amsterdam for the past year and sail in the Markermeer and interior waterways often. I would love to meet up while you as I have been following the channel for a long time. Happy to help with boat projects or show you around. I know sixhaven marina well and could absolutely shoot over whenever you have a moment.

The Netherlands is my heritage country. Was born a couple years after my parents left. Just started sailing…my goal is to sail there before I get too old. Just curious how you picked Amsterdam for winter storage
How does the 90 day Schenegen rule work at sea? Presumably (i) sea time between two Schenegen ports counts towards your 90 days; (ii) sea time approaching or leaving a Schenegen port from/to a third country does not count towards your 90 days. Anyone knows if that is correct?
Great to see the crossing to Amsterdam. Looked more challenging than some ocean crossings, with all the man made hazards in place. While Pickled Herring is wintering in Europe, i am sure you have a surprise project lined up for us, now you have your workshop etc. :)
Dear Sam, lovely video and are you still in Amsterdam? I live about 10 miles west of Amsterdam and would love to meet and hear some of your experiences and recommendations - thinking of buying a sailboat again :-) Looking forward to hearing from you. Warm regards, Joep
Methinks its just the barge owner/skipper's cars that they pack around with them for convenience and thrift! Casual observer from PNW! Also they plant those windmills in the Spring and by next year they've multiplied!
In the English Channel/Solent/ Mediterranean VHF is essential. Quite apart from Mayday call outs, talking to other ships to make them aware of you is crucial. Sorry Sam, but this was poor advice. Doug.
I agree, but he did say "if you're just getting started, just use your cell phone...". I think he meant for beginners a vhf is not neccesary equipment, as long as you have a cell phone. I doubt that a cell phone would work on an ocean crossing, though!
Awesome video! Can't believe you're walking through my street over there. Sadly I'm renovating my new house on the other side of the country, otherwise I'd have welcomed you for a cup of coffee.. How long are you in Amsterdam for?
Something dystopian about those off shore wind farms. They also have to bury the blades when they get old, so they have fields of buried giant wind mill blades.

For that voyage I hope you had a good radar reflector and an AIS system. Heavy shipping traffic can be dangerous for little boats..
Very good options for winterizing a boat in Freisland
Thanks

Those cars belong to the crew of the ship. Whenever they have their downtime they crane the cars onto shore and drive back home for the weekend.
