It's physics. The amplitude of the wave of is greatest in the center of the length of the string.
I used to have a 335 like this with humbuckers. If you take a guitar like that and tested both of the single coils within the neck humbucker the one against the neck will give you 10x as much bass as the other one. Test it and see. Rich and velvety and so round and smooth. After I tried that on mine, I left it that way and never reconnected the other half of the coil in that neck humbucker. It became the ultimate neck single coil thick and round and still chimy and bright. Never should have sold that thing.

    I have a 1963 Cherry finish 330 TDC with P 90s.
I had just turned 16 in 1968. I expected a car for my birthday. But instead my mother bought me a Schwinn bicycle. I told my friends at school that my mom was gonna buy me a car. So I wasn’t feeling too good about it. A friend at school liked my brand new Schwinn bicycle. He knew that I played guitar. He offered to trade me a guitar that he got a few years earlier for his birthday for my bicycle. I was open to the suggestion. We went to his house, and he went to the closet in his bedroom and pulled out this guitar case.. he opened the case and there was a 1963 gibson 330 TDC. I wasn’t too crazy about it because it was not a fender. But I did the swap.
A few days later, my mom asked me where my bicycle was. She bought it with the tips she was getting as a waitress. I told her I traded it for a guitar. She was mad, she told me to go get my bicycle back right now and give the guitar back…
so I took the guitar to my classmates house and told him that I needed the bike back. Unfortunately, the bike had been stolen, or so he said. So I ended up stuck with the guitar that I still on to this day here in 2024…
my Schwinn bicycle cost my mother $49.95..
This guitar was my garage band guitar along with my 1959 fender jazz master that I bought in a pawnshop for $175 of money that I saved myself by cutting grass, shoveling, snow, doing chores, for grandma, even going door to door selling Christmas cards..
when I went to the pawnshop, there were two fender guitars there. A sunburst Stratocaster with a horrible, scratch on the back of the guitar.. It didn’t look like it was done by accident, it looked like it had been stabbed with a screwdriver, and someone dragged the screwdriver across the back of the guitar out of spite. It was pretty bad.
The Stratocaster did not have a case either
The jazz, master, however, did have a case lined with orange velour or whatever it was, that the factory put in the fender cases. I went for the jazz master that was $175 over the Stratocaster with the scratch and no case for $100. That was in 1966. I wonder today what year that Stratocaster was..
my jazz master finish was very rough. It looked like it was halfway to being in the same rough shape is Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar. That paint on those guitars, just chipped off like fingernail polish. And the jazz master had cigarette burns on the headstock. But it was all there. I went for the jazz master, because that was the most expensive guitar fender made at the time, $479… The Jaguar was the same price. A Stratocaster was $410. That was the same price as a fender super reverb, a fender, twin reverb was the same price as the jazz master, $479…
that’s fender and my gibson 330 where are my smoky bar gig Guitars through the 70s and 80s.
in 1969 I was in a high school garage band, and we all had white guitars after I painted my jazz master with a spray can to match the other guitar players Guitars..
over the years I got better Guitars. The finish on my jazz master neck was completely worn off the back of the neck when I got it I mean it was down to just wood.. back in those days, road worn or patina was not acceptable like it is today.
I see them selling guitars that have obviously been sanded with power sanders to make them look. “road worn???” and selling for $5500 for a Stratocaster that’s all beat up. What a genius move that was. The factory doesn’t have to worry about a guitar getting damaged when it’s being built. Because they will just take a sander to it and say that it is road worn and quadruple the price. Genius. I wonder if I take a sander to my ram pick up truck or my wife’s on the CRV, and put a bunch of scratches in it, I wonder if I can sell it for four or five times what it cost new? Why not, it’s the same thing..
In 2017, or thereabouts, I saw with old fender guitars, were selling for on eBay. I had a few other Guitars that I liked much better than my jazz master. So just for fun, I put my jazz master on eBay. One hour later I got a question on ebay, what will you take for it right now?
I thought it was some kid playing games so I threw a ridiculously high number at him. One minute later I got a return message, “SOLD.”
I packed up my guitar and shipped to Moscow Russia from here in the USA. The money I got for it I went out and bought my wife a brand new car…
A couple years later I had sellers remorse. So I went out and bought a squire, fender, jazz, master, same color…
My squire, jazzmaster is better in every way than my original 1959 jazz master.. The neck is faster, the pick ups are cleaner sounding, the pots, rotates smoothly, it’s just as heavy, the switches, especially the roller switches on the upper side of the guitar roll better/easier.. The neck is the best part of the squire.. I always felt that the original neck on my 59 felt like a baseball bat split in half that someone put frets on and bolted it to a guitar body. The Squier jazz master is better in every way looks, sound, feel, operation, it stays in tune, the machines rotate smoothly..
In spite of all that, I still feel like I just sold my dog.. For that reason, there is no way I am going to part with my gibson 330. I’m not gonna make the same mistake twice.
I don’t know if it’s mental, imagination, or voodoo, but I’ve had quite a few other guitars, including gibson’s.. my 63, 330 is magical to play. Maybe it’s because I had it early in life and I adapted to that guitar.. But I can play better call me and I love the way it sounds at high volume with those nickel plated P 90s.. I have had to 335s.. 335s are longer, it’s harder to play down towards the headstock making fancy chords compared to the 330..
I have never had my 330 professionally set up. It is all original, I have never made a single adjustment to the bridge or the truss rod, and it plays like butter…
Of the 60 or 80 guitars that I have had over the decades, my 330 is the best one..
    BUT---
I recently bought a D Angelico guitar much like a 330 or 335, it’s guard D Angelico designed pick ups that can be switched from hum bucker to P 90 pick ups. It is a semi hollow like a 335, not like a 330 which is completely hollow. And my D Angelico does not have F holes or a sound holes anywhere in the body… I forget the model number, but it’s the one that does not have sound holes or F holes. This is my favorite guitar, for the moment…
I’m a guitar junkie. There’s something about having a new guitar, or new tires on your motorcycle, or a new pair of shoes that makes you feel good

Your right we don’t. We make them far superior. It’s all in the image. Consciousness is truly an amazing thing. We aren’t even scratching the surface of consciousness and it’s connection to both the unseen realm and the physical realm and what we are capable of. These vintage guitars are always going to sound better because people have literally created a thought form that influences others thoughts and senses into thinking these things have some magical properties. They don’t. Only magical thing happening is the fact that your mind can make you believe it’s so. So if that’s the reality your living then that is reality. Very confusing. IMO guitars are obviously better made today and more consistent. People will always idolize these guitars and it’s not just the usual confirmation bias. We all see reality differently and when passionate your reality will inevitably conform to your expectations when concerning inanimate objects. Creating your own reality in which these guitars sound better to you and don’t sound any better than a new one for far less to the next guy. Sound is entirely subjective. Even if you were to measure the frequency’s that doesn’t mean your hearing the same thing I am. So next time anyone tries to tell you or sell you some bs remember it’s up to you how angry gets (and how many stab wounds) your significant gets , how much debt racks your conscience and kids college funds and how big the smile is on your smile is on your face while the world crumbles. Cause baby you might see the end times as the world falls apart and the pain suffered is so excruciating for the non believers that their only thought is for the release of death from their personal hell as their flesh is skinned from their body like a vegetable but fuck did you hear the tone from my custom shop bigdickson 335inch neck pickup rolled back to 8 through my new Princeton reverb custom ?

Gibsons always sound better with P-90s.
The ES-330 might be Gibson's best electric offering.

Got to find a good Gibson to begin with and much like Marshall they are only decent after you have them modded.. There has been little my Jacksons, Ibanez Jems or if I really want tone my Tele will give me everything I need.. but lately my Sterling Axis can do the work of the many not the few .. I learned a long time ago not to bank on that much money in place with Gibson because as a teen I bought a 57 Black Beauty and I felt like I wasted my money.. To be honest the Epiphone Re Issue had a better tone than the original..I have just never felt the need even after seeing all of the quote pros using Gibson I think I felt I didn't need to find a way to make peace with a Les Paul when so many were already making them famous..

    "Hmm, today I will play a 59 es330"
*proceeds to play the most generc minor blues licks youve ever heard. With the ugliest tlne inahinable. It take a lot of misguided effortt to get such a great guitar, played thru a classic Fender tube amp, to sound that dull & soulless.
Enough with the generic blues riffs for every single demo and review. I dont play blues. Id rather hear you demo it with jazz, country, Chuck Berry riffs, punk, or post-punk Alt rock like Joy Division or the Cure. Some Steely Dan riffs would also sound great, since Larry Carlton played a very similar guitar (pretty sure he used hunbucks tho. Not p90s)
Or even better, you could play a bunch of different styles to show us how versatile the guitar is. Dont go straight to noodling in a minor pentatonic scale just because it's easy & requires no thought.

Sounds very muddy and muffled in that clip. a lot of bass ... that's not how a good P90 sounds (clear, bright enough with some warmess quality, open)
