I think my house purchase and my travels are my best investment. People often think that travel is waste of money, but i cherish each and every place that i visited and will have wonderful memories for the rest of my life. It does not have to be fancy or far away. I always find a deep connection to places i visited especially if they are surrounded with nature. To travel is such a freeing feeling for me.

I just found you at exactly the right time in my life. In this crazy year 2020 I, like many others, have re-evaluated what my best purchases and investments are. As I accompany my husband on his cancer journey my priorities have shifted and time spent with him in our home is my best investment. He can no longer go on walks but we enjoy spending time in our desert setting watching the wildlife whilst having a glass of wine. I realize how buying this property was a great investment. Time seems more precious now and whatever we have left together will never be enough. After he is gone I plan on living a minimalist lifestyle. It will be a long road and I will turn to your channel for inspiration. Thank you.

I am so sorry to hear about your husband's situation Annie. Even in a difficult situation like yours, you seem so positive and incredibly strong. You are an inspiration and your story gave me so much perspective. I'm so happy to hear that you and your husband can enjoy your home together. It sounds like it was a great investment for many different reasons. Thank you so much for sharing your story and for watching my videos Annie. Much love from Maui.

I can relate to this sooo much. I was diagnosed with cancer last year and went through chemo. Being at home with my significant other was so valuable to me. Investing in our space was also something I started to do as I recovered.

Great topic! I love that instead of money you say purchasing power: most people don’t realise that money is energy and they just waste it mindlessly. By calling it purchasing power you give respect to it. It’s not that minimalists don’t buy things-they are just so much more mindful about their purchases.

    • @MalamaLife
      @MalamaLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

You said it perfectly! Ever since I started to see money as energy, it gave me a different perspective. I am way more selective on how I decide to use it. Thank you for your lovely comment

I bought a second paddle board to be able to share this with my closest friends knowing they couldn’t afford to purchase one themselves. It was the best money spent and I have zero regrets!

I truly find you a blessing. You give me alot of clarity. Now I've been on a journey to keep my state of bliss, i haven't had debt in years. But you definitely pull back the curtains in this staged world. Society makes life so complicated, when its really so simple. When you appreciate life & what you cherish every moment given. The world is not only still, but so much bigger with less.

The best purchases / investment I have ever made are:
    1) Books, especially those about mental health and the book introducing me to minimalism.
    2) Shares in amazing companies
    3) a Sealy mattress and a Simmons beauty rest pillow
    4) quality bedsheets from casablanca
    5) iphone which is so reliable and best phone brand ever
    6) a nice property in a nice living environment
    7) my kid’s education, but I won’t know if he values it until very long time away

Your voice, esthetic, and video quality gives me the hope I need to do this. The fact that you are also addressing the fact that minimalists also want to spend sometimes, it helps to know what might be helpful for mindfulness and mental well being. The world is in such chaos right now, we need you... 🥰🤗

I'm busy saving for my tiny house (nearly there) on my own piece of land which is one of the reasons I find your channel so enchanting. Clever buys are imperative to keep place de-cluttered and live slowly & intentionally. Ito "educational", I've recently started doing self-defense classes for women (very important in South Africa - crime capital of the world). That is so empowering and one of the best investments I've made.

I agree with everything you listed Sophie!
I would like to add three more:
    9) get as good, reliable, and safe transportation as you can afford. it does not need to be brand new. We have bought only one new car( through cash for clunkers). Every other car has been slightly used. If the car becomes unsafe or unreliable, it’s time to get a different one.
    10) get a good communications/entertainment/media system as you can afford. For safety, you need good cell phone coverage. A good Internet is invaluable to our daily lives. Because our television reception over the airwaves is poor, we got a minimum channel cable tv system with a smart TV. This really helps us to stay informed and entertained, especially now!
    11) seek out good certified professional advice in financial investing/taxes/financial planning. Often the fees are not as much as you would think, as it’s based on what you have to work with. The money is well spent! It will relieve a lot of anxiety for you and everyone around you! You’ve got a coach and a plan!

    • @MalamaLife
      @MalamaLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great list Mark! I am looking for a professional tax/account who knows the system better than I do. I can definitely learn more about it, but I think having someone who specializes in it and getting their perspective is invaluable. Also, I love that you guys buy used cars. I also love my old Prius and would not trade it in for a new car! It works fine because I maintain it and try not to drive too crazy. Thanks for your lovely input!

The BOSE headset makes an appearance! Great video Sophie! I really agree and can relate to #1, 7 and 8. The camera equipment I've been purchasing and experimenting with for TH-cam has been really valuable. I also use the equipment to make TH-cam videos for my company, so they have also appreciated the improved quality in my videos as well as giving me some artistic license to try some fun things out. I definitely put a high value on knowledge and education. Reading books has been by far the most valuable thing I do when it comes to learning new things. And I'm lucky enough to have a fairly robust library nearby, so I don't even have to spend any money, the books are free! And building relationships and spending quality time with friends and loved ones is sooooo important. When you spend time with others and invest in them, you somehow reap some rewards in the future. I don't know how it happens, but it happens. I would say that their a few things I've purchased that I've really gotten a lot of value from, would be be Tae Kwon Do training. I've been lucky enough to get a lot of training on the cheap, because I trained as a student where classes were discounted or free. And TKD has been an important part of my life that I maintain to this day. I has also taught me discipline, along with many other valuable life lessons. Great video Sophie! Like-487

I used rent books from my university library, and it was amazing to choose from a huge collection...for free. Do you still train for Tae Kwon Do? I did it for many years too and stopped at green belt haha ! But yes, great investment for me too. invaluable lessons from training martial arts. Thanks for watching Alex! always enjoy reading your comment.

Smart phone - I have an inexpensive unlocked dual sim from amazon that works great internationally.
Laptop - mostly for day trading. A desktop takes up too much room and can't travel with me.
Sleeping bag - I don't stay in a hotel on late arrivals and early check ins.
Yoga mat - especially now that I'm training myself to sit crossed legged for longer period.
Additional monthly payment towards principle pays your property off in much lesser time... saving $$$ in interest.
    Investing in my well being.

The investment in good quality seeds and soil (bokassa) for our little balcony garden is as well a huge point. Minimalism is a state of mind, and not a set of rules!!! However there’re a lot of misunderstandings between minimalism and frugality... Being a minimalist you are still intentional buying fewer items but at the same time you may choose & purchase items with higher quality,,, frugality is about looking for opportunities to save money.. Minimalism gives us more time, more space, more peace and more freedom...😘

    • @MalamaLife

It wasn't until a few days ago that I discovered your channel. I am slowly catching up, and as I mentioned before, your voice is beautiful, so I listen to you with great pleasure. Photography is also one of my passions. You have a really great camera. I take pictures with old analog SLRs. You can see that your life is very well organized. A great balance between modernity and respect for nature. Maybe I'm wrong, or maybe you're just sharing a fraction of your life with the audience, but you seem a little lonely. However, it seems to me that this is only the message - "what do I do when I enjoy a moment just for myself, peace and quiet.
At the very end, I dare to mention again what a beautiful woman you are.. ♥️

Because of the whole time is money belief in many western cultures it may sound contra intuitive but to invest (or spend) more time on sleeping makes you more productive when you are awake, enhances your memory (so that you actually remember your travels) and makes you an overall nicer and more peaceful person to be around. I don't have kids though and deeply respect all the parents out there with small kids getting sleep at all.
