Rob, Its a Audi cluster, we get the same failures. Replace them all the time for similar failure (Speedo, or other indicators on cluster, its pretty prevalent on the other generation cars. )
Just wondering, did the malfunctioning car have a tow point on the front, at minimum you could've had a tow car that you followed or they were following you... just for next time i guess...
I had the tach die that way on a GM ,, the tach in my case was made for use in 4 , 6 and 8cyl cars ,,, a jumper in the back shorts out terminals that adjust the tach for the number of pulses. The jumper came off when I hit a pothole. Isn't that tach made by VW/Audi and have the same settings for 4/6/8/10 cyl?
probably a valve body or hall effect speed sensor problem. Mercedes benz's have a similar issue where there is a magnetic pickup sensor that goes in and out and the computer has no clue how fast the transmission is going so it goes into a limp mode.

Gotta love the friendly people of New York helping the guy with a broken down car clear the intersection by laying on their horns. Much better solution than helping to push the car out of the way.

Oh my word, had the same issue happen to me in my Ferrari 360 F1. I was blocking traffic for a major merging point for two highways in Toronto. This suck so bad. Same deal, would turn off the car and wait for it to reset. Later I found if you get the error while moving, pull the up paddle and hold. It will override the error and keep the car in gear at stop / start. Oh the joys
What an absolute nightmare. This is why i stick to old 70's & 80's, standard transmission pickups for the most part. Proven and a lot less to go wrong.

My Mercedes S550 brakes kept locking up during rush hour traffic.. As long as I didn't have press them, I didn't have an issue.. If I came to a stop, or had to push them down hard... That's when I had a 50/50 chance of potentially being screwed.

What dash cam were you using? If you remember lol.
Same happened on mine last year. It was the flux capacitors main resister fuses fuse in the glove box.

Is hopping out to push while it's still rolling out of the question on account of how heavy the thing is?
It weighs about 3500 pounds. If there is even a slight incline 1 man ain't likely pushin it while still being able to steer.

my brother 5 speed eclipse had the same problem we blocked a lane of because it wouldnt go in gear and the clutch was messed up badly
