The tape thing is not for pulling up the tape but for keeping the roll from moving as you are sealing a box or whatever.

The tape one does not work when you push it but you’re actually supposed to take the tape lift it up and put it onto that little plastic piece so you can always find it. It’s a placeholder. But wait! For the grilled cheese, all the oil in the pan would drip out!!
The trick would be to oil/butter the outside of the sandwich instead of the pan.
