Save Bucks. Build Your Own EV Like He Did

  • In the late 1980s, I got a job to record electric vehicles and their owners of all kinds. This guy built his own EV and I thought the interview and what he had done, absolutely fantastic.
In the 1980s, the concept of electric vehicles (EVs) was much less mainstream than it is today, and the technology was relatively primitive compared to modern standards. Despite these challenges, there were indeed enthusiasts and innovators who attempted to build their own electric vehicles.
The technology available for electric vehicles in the 1980s was quite limited. Batteries were less efficient, offering lower energy density and shorter lifespans. This meant that DIY electric vehicles often had limited range and performance compared to traditional gasoline vehicles.
Many of the electric vehicles from this era were conversions of existing gasoline-powered cars. Enthusiasts would replace the internal combustion engine with an electric motor and batteries. This process required significant mechanical and electrical knowledge.
These early electric vehicle builders were often innovators and hobbyists. They experimented with various types of batteries, motors, and designs to improve performance and efficiency. Their work laid important groundwork for future developments in electric vehicle technology.
The success of these early electric vehicles varied greatly. Some were able to achieve reasonable performance and range, but many were limited in practicality. Issues such as long charging times, limited range, and lack of power were common.
Although these early DIY electric vehicles were not widely successful in a commercial sense, they played a crucial role in keeping the concept of electric mobility alive. They also provided valuable lessons and insights that would later be used in the development of more advanced electric vehicles.
Another challenge was the lack of regulatory support and market demand for electric vehicles at the time. The infrastructure for charging and maintaining EVs was almost non-existent, which made it difficult for these vehicles to gain widespread acceptance.
While the DIY electric vehicles of the 1980s were not particularly successful in terms of performance or widespread adoption, they were important in keeping the idea of electric transportation alive and contributed to the development of today's more advanced and practical electric vehicles.

Funny thing is, EVs predate internal combustion engines. First EV was driven in 1832, first ICE was 1863... big oil has been holding back progress for a long time.

I like the idea behind electric vehicles, but tge problem is that they cram so many unneeded parts to modern EVs to drive up the price. What should be almost the simplest machine is made to be the most complex one so it could be sold for $40k a pop. As a result, ev sales are plummeting.

    • @GreenTea3699
      @GreenTea3699 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I like the idea of EV but there are so MANY problems.
First off is the amount of natural resources needed to even put an EV on the road. Before it's ever driven, the modern EV uses more resources than driving a regular car for years, not to mention most of the resources mining is done by children (it's bad. Look up the videos)
The 2nd HUGE problem is that our electric grid is already overburdened. We've seen that in the last several years in the summer and winter.
Imagine your grandmother losing her electricity in a snowstorm but can't leave to get shelter because she can't charge the car. A disaster that WILL happen over & over if we go all electric.
What about the poor people needing food? They don't have $300 to pay their electric bill but they do have enough gas in the car to get them to the food pantry so the kids don't go hungry.
The next biggest hurdle is that the cars catch on fire when certain parts get wet. It's reported some household insurance companies are already excluding fire if there's an EV in an attached garage.
Another big no is the price of the battery replacement. People are dumping their whole car because it costs too much to replace the battery. Another huge waste of resources.
Next is the logistics of natural resources. It's reported their aren't enough natural resources to replace every current running gas vehicle with an EV, not to mention the replacements.
For these reasons and more, EVs need to remain a novelty and NOT ever be considered as a pretend solution. They would be an environmental disaster.

This is cool David it reminds me of an assignment that my fourth grade teacher gave to her class she asks us to come up with an alternate way to power a car that did not run on fossil fuel and would be environment friendly 1/3 of her class said an electric car because electric golfcart had been invented back in the early 1950's so why not an electric car. when the first electric car was made for the general public, it made me think back to my classroom assignment and someone actually perfected one 20 to 30 years later. thanks Davis Hoffman

Hybrids are the cooler option. All-EVs, even in 2020’s form, still aren’t feasible, most especially in cold, ❄️ places. Until they’re perfected, including a charge of 5 mins. or less, there’s not going to be a full transition.
