This car reminds me of the cars that were used on the tv show called "Highway Patrol." This show ran from 1955 to 1959. The star of this show was actor Broderick Crawford, who played Can Mathews, the head of the Highway Patrol. I still watch Highway Patrol, as most of the episodes are on TH-cam.
I love these old beauties much more than today's cars. Most of today's cars have no character at all, you don't even have to drive them, computers and other electronic stuff do everything for you. Great vid, keep on the good work, Kyle!
I agree 1,000%. All the new cars are beginning to look alike and it's only going to get worse as aerodynamics become a bigger factor in the designs. I would give up a little mileage in a heartbeat to bring some fun & style back to cars.

My father drove a 6-cylinder version of the 1959 Biscayne. It was part of the State of Nebraska motor pool for the State Department of Roads. At one time these Biscaynes were as common as dirt.
My Dad had a '58 Ford Fairlane. When he brought it home from the Ford place (used car lot), he was so excited to get it, he didn't even look at the engine. When this shiny "new" Ford showed up, I was around 12 years, a total car nut, the first thing I wanted him to do was pop the hood. As the massive hood came up (from the front of the car as was the thing in the early 50's), Dad's also popped as the 312 Thunderbird Police Interceptor engine came into view. The air cleaner was massive, giving the engine a sense of size it didn't really have! As *I* jumped up and down with glee, Pop exclaimed, "OH MY GOSH, WHAT HAVE I GOT HERE!??". Turns out the car WAS supposed to be a police car. but was sold on the civilian market!
Pretty sweet ride. Always really liked the 1959 GM lineup...especially the Pontiac's. 59 was the first year of both the 389 engine and Wide Track styling. Pontiac was dominating basically every type of racing at that time. But this is a sinister looking 59 Biscayne. And she sounds awesome
Fantastic....about 20 years ago, a friend of mine had a chance to buy an ex cop 59 Chev from Arizona....complete but rough...std trans, with the tri power 348...all original...he backed down due to the supposed rust issues....what an idiot...now, so much of the tin is available. The guy wanted 1500 bucks.... Hope the right guy picked it up!!

It just gives me goose bumps and joy when I see it/hear it in person, even though I am from Europe. Sometimes I wish those kind of cars were made here as well. I owned one for three years. I bought it from a guy in Bremerton, Washington that had just picked it up at an Oregon State vehicle auction in 1962. I knew it was a ex-cop car, but I didn't know at the time what had been done to it. All I knew was that it would out perform anything until the 409's and 426's came along. I paid $1200 for it and sold it for $1500 and thought I had cut a fat hog. I would give my 80 year old left nut to have it back today. It surprised so many "muscle cars" of the day, including a new Dodge 383 Washington State Patrol vehicle that didn't have a chance after about 125 mph. The Biscayne would top 135. If I had it today, I would probably still be getting into trouble with it. I never could keep my foot out of it.
Back in the 60s my father built a drag car from a 59 Biscayne with the 348 cid engine. Raced throughout the Mid Atlantic...Delmar, Richmond, York, Capital, Cecil County, etc. Dominated his class
The exterior design of the 1959 Chevrolets was extreme and ridiculous, which is what makes it perhaps the coolest American car ever! Sometimes the cheap stripped down models of cars with radical design like this actually show off the design the best.
It is not a CB radio. CB means Citizens Band. That would be a Motorola Police Band radio in this car. The 2 way radio and whip antenna would have been installed after the police took delivery of the vehicle and not done at the factory. Also the flasher lights activated by the lighted pull switch would have also been installed after delivery of the police vehicle and would be used to activate the police emergency lights.

Back in 1998 my uncle let me drive his 1960 Biscayne for a week while the radiator on my car was being fixed. He bought it from the original owner who he had known since he was little. it had an automatic transmission but manual steering and manual brakes, and it had a VERY powerful V8 engine in it. it attracted quite a bit of attention in the parking lot at the factory where I worked at the time. To date it is the oldest car I have ever driven.
With the old cars you don't have to push in the clutch to start them!! Also, the hazards usually flash the blinkers, were as this example has auxiliary lamps behind the grill! Is that because it was law enforcement?
***** the 348 W motor was a big block motor listed as a 5.7 but the domed shaped combustion chambers & stroke made it a big block very different from todays SBC 5.7, 1st introduced in 58 it was commonly called a truck motor, but not so, the 348 was offered with Carter 4brl, a tri-power intake option (3x2's) or fuel injection also the big block 348 would accept 409 & 427 heads making it super nasty in the 6000 rpm & up range

One of the best 59 Chevy's I've ever seen. But I'd think with the amount of impeccable detail and effort placed into it, that the Motorola 2-way radio (not a CB radio) would only be a prop and not a complete unit. There are no power/data cables coming out of the rear of the control head under the dash, they whip antenna is connected to nothing, and there is no trunk mounted transceiver.If you are looking for points on the fact this is a former patrol car, then finish the job :). I'll assume there is a siren and red bubble light somewhere?
Boy is that Nice... Prettiest Derriere that has ever existed on an Automobile I think and there have been some very nice ones over the years. Not sure "Massive" is very accurate for a 348 but anyway... So Nice...
Very nicely restored with one exception. The rear seat. The material is very wrinkled. I'm no expert having installed upholstery material on one car, my 1965 Mustang but it came out much better. Just a couple small puckers above the drive shaft tunnel.
I have a '59 Biscayne two-door in the same condition except mine has the poor man's 6 cylinder with an automatic two speed power glide transmission. It is a pleasure to drive. Although, It gets a little Floaty when turning and cornering, like a boat on the water. There's about three to four inches of space between the seat and door which makes a great cup holder. I just wedge my Mickey Dee's cup in there and it never moves. In my opinion the '59 Biscayne was Chevrolet's best looking car.
All true. That 348 was the first Chevy big block. Dubuted in PU trucks and bigger trucks and some few cars In '58. Herkey big piece of cast iron. Truck engine? Yep! Low Rpm, High torque.....Later became 409, 396, 427, in the same block. Meanwhile, chevy smallblocks were Kicking ass! Started in '55 with the 265. 283 in '57, 327 in 58 or 59 but didn't get the press of the 409. Pretty much run rings around same big block car. Chevy smallblocks are still HOT now. Now we get over the yrs, 265, 283, 327, 305, 307, 350, 400 in many versions. Every one nasty in it's own way. 327 maybe the best, but a 4 bolt mainbearing 350 from the early 70's gets my vote. No muscle car for me, Got me a PU truck. Truck style, One bench seat cab, 8 foot cargo bed, first disc brakes in front, 7 leaf springs in the back. Walk away at 10,000 lb gvw. and tow 8,000 off a simple bumper hitch. Wasn't a slow PU off the showroom but over the yrs I kinda improved that thing a little. Cam, lifters, HD rockers, double spring Valves on the stock 194 heads, Street performer intake under a Carter 800 CFM Thermoquad carb. OK, Daily driver, around town stoplight to stoplight, 35 mph........9 mpg. On the highway at 70 mph loaded to 9,000 lb plus and or towing an 8,000 lb 35 ft 2 axle RV trailer.....13-17 mpg. Sounds crummy right?, Consider, Yer wimpy Prius gets say 40MPG. All U can make it weigh Is less than the dry weight of that PU. It can tow or haul about 7 of yer Hybrid cars and be more efficient. Miles per pound. Not to say everybody should drive a HD, fast car. No, there be a place for U and yer bitty tuna can car. If U buy a car for mileage first, I pity you. I keep cars long years. I buy what works, Usefullness trumps fuel cost every time. Ya, I got a "mileage car" It's a rotten little 70's import hatchback. Thinks it's a sportscar and it's not far wrong, 96 HP, 5 speed manual shift... Froggy little tuna can car. FUN to drive! Half an engine, 4 cyl, 27 MPG with my foot in the gas tank. Drove it 20 yrs. Ya, I'm old, drove the hot Chevy PU 20 yrs also. Miles and performance matter. The hatchback wouldn't do close to what the PU would. I have since bought something in between. Got me a "Wuss Wagon" in my old age. It's Red inside and out, SUV, Called midsise but larger than some. Red wagon, Not an any kind of a racecar. 1990 Toyota, 4 Runner. Equipped to be a "real" 4WD" with underbody skid plates and all that offroad crap. But it got the Pwr locks and windows and rear view mirros, All the candy that no true 4WD needs. A roiling contradiction. But it's comfortable with it's AC and the rest. Bought it cheap and gonna run the wheels offa it!
In Canada, the Biscayne was also called a Pontiac Strato chief, which had a 261 c.i.d, which was a bored out 235 as well as other Chevy motors, this wasn't a wide tracking Catalina, which had Pontiac Motors.

This car looks menacing!! Even meaner with rear wheels hub caps but wider! Same steering wheel but smaller, they make them and they make the wheels too!
I learned something today, my '69 300 hp Nova SS had a 336 differential, maybe my top speed was 135 mph? Those bottom air vents let in a lot of air, plus the quarter vent windows, and 3 on the tree...beautiful.
The 348 was also available with the TurboGlide transmission... a 3 speed automatic meant to compete with fords cruisomatic 3 speed. They were grossly unreliable due to a weak housing and many actually were replaced by PowerGlides. However they were faster at acceleration, for a couple passes anyway.

This car is awesome all around. The styling is iconic, the engine sounds great. And that classic GM horn at 3:33, so much better than the new ones.

I owned a 59 with a 6 with manual trans. I drove it for about 6yrs in the late 60's and it was one of the best cars I ever owned.

Soon as I saw those crossed flags on the front of the hood (at 0:10 seconds) I knew what was under the hood, a 348.

I'm surprised it has only 2 doors, for a cop car.
They came as both 2 and 4 door sedans. This is classified as a 2 door sedan with the tall roof and B-pillar :)

Sounded like solid lifters with the audio in the engine bay. I tried to research if the 348 had solids or not. No luck.

Sounds crummy right?, Consider, Yer wimpy Prius gets say 40MPG. All U can make it weigh Is less than the dry weight of that PU. It can tow or haul about 7 of yer Hybrid cars and be more efficient. Miles per pound. Not to say everybody should drive a HD, fast car. No, there be a place for U and yer bitty tuna can car. If U buy a car for mileage first, I pity you.
I keep cars long years. I buy what works, Usefullness trumps fuel cost every time. Ya, I got a "mileage car" It's a rotten little 70's import hatchback. Thinks it's a sportscar and it's not far wrong, 96 HP, 5 speed manual shift... Froggy little tuna can car. FUN to drive! Half an engine, 4 cyl, 27 MPG with my foot in the gas tank. Drove it 20 yrs. Ya, I'm old, drove the hot Chevy PU 20 yrs also. Miles and performance matter. The hatchback wouldn't do close to what the PU would. I have since bought something in between. Got me a "Wuss Wagon" in my old age. It's Red inside and out, SUV, Called midsise but larger than some. Red wagon, Not an any kind of a racecar. 1990 Toyota, 4 Runner. Equipped to be a "real" 4WD" with underbody skid plates and all that offroad crap. But it got the Pwr locks and windows and rear view mirros, All the candy that no true 4WD needs. A roiling contradiction. But it's comfortable with it's AC and the rest. Bought it cheap and gonna run the wheels offa it!

brdwonder 396 is a Mk IV, not a W, or Mk I . Chevrolet has a lot of really confusing engine history, including 5 different 427s.
Not the same blocks as 409 do some research,you cannot take a 348 and turn it into a 409 !!!!!!!!!!

@@johnnyhawkins43 I think you would be wrong. Both are W blocks. My father did it to the 348 in his 58 Impala back in the day.
In Canada, the Biscayne was also called a Pontiac Strato chief, which had a 261 c.i.d, which was a bored out 235 as well as other Chevy motors, this wasn't a wide tracking Catalina, which had Pontiac Motors.

I learned something today, my '69 300 hp Nova SS had a 336 differential, maybe my top speed was 135 mph? Those bottom air vents let in a lot of air, plus the quarter vent windows, and 3 on the tree...beautiful.

If you look under hood at firewall it's missing brake booster. It made brakes soft as butter. This model brakes are hard as brick.
Yeah, he said it had power brakes but it clearly didn't.

The 348 was also available with the TurboGlide transmission... a 3 speed automatic meant to compete with fords cruisomatic 3 speed. They were grossly unreliable due to a weak housing and many actually were replaced by PowerGlides. However they were faster at acceleration, for a couple passes anyway.
