At a flea market or swap meet, if it looks like a diamond, it is, until you can prove otherwise. To yourself, that is, the seller will still swear it's a diamond, as long as they can sell it as such. Your eyes, ears, & wits are the only means you can really trust in such places, but if something's worth the price to you, that's all that really counts in the long run.
G'Day Chief Smokem-- From Australia, Thanks for taking us along to this amazing flea market. Flea markets and car boot sales here in OZ don't have any thing like what you find over in the US--definitely no firearms, although I've picked up a few old firearms related tools such as brass/iron shotgun reloading gear. I don’t really personally know any people in our age group (you and I are around the same age I think) that are really into this type of stuff. I think we’re just a couple of old souls, and in another universe could have been the best of friends lol
That Guy with a “ Krag Jungle Carbine “ is sitting on a fortune, the only one ever made because the term “ Jungle Carbine “ refers to the British No V Mk I. But someone will believe his BS and buy it.
As someone who has a decent knowledge of mil-surps and firearms in general I can not stand guys like that! They don’t know what they’re talking about nor do they want to learn anything 🤦🏼♂️.
They did make a short rifle version of the Krag called the "Philippine Constabulary Model", which is quite rare & valuable, but that's definitely not it. That old Krag is a "Frankenstein", cobbled together from surplus parts, likely by Francis Bannerman or some other pre-WWII surplus house. Such rifles were often bought by American Legion posts for parades and funeral salutes. Many WW 1 vets, trained on the '03 Springfield & M17 Enfield, wanted a "modern" bolt action rifle, & tons of surplus Krags were sold in the 20's & 30's as cheap, effective deer rifles. They put food on the table during the Great Depression, when there was often no other way, & in hard times like that, if your rifle shoots straight & feeds you, that's all that matters. In time, it passes on to someone else who doesn't need or want it, & to wring all the cash out of it they can, they concoct some BS story to try to get it from someone who doesn't know better.
The bad news is that at every flea market there are always at least 1 or 2 guys trying to sell rifles like that. Cut downs and/or home made copies of so called "Jungle carbines". As mentioned in another post, only the .303 British SMLE's used the term and there are not that many originals but Lord knows plenty of Aholes with hack saws will try and make a buck!
