I definitely think the embroidery and beadwork was the highlight of all of the costumes. The men were consistently well-dressed this season and were standouts to me, especially Corlys Velaryon and Viserys Targaryen. I definitely agree that in future, jewellery pieces significant to the plot or taking pride of place onscreen should be sourced from small, independent jewellers rather than off-the-rack. It gives the designer both of the jewellery and of the costumes more creativity. I’m looking forward to your Misses video!

Some small Rhaenyra costume details I really just fell in love with that I wanna mention:
    - Young Rhaenyra’s octagon-shaped, gold & ruby earrings she wears in ep 5 in the opening scene. They just look so chic, im hoping someone on Etsy makes a copy of them 😭
    - The bright red rubies pinned on Rhaenyra’s hair for her wedding. They just add that classy elegant feel to her look during the wedding
    - Adult Rhaenyra’s silky, pale blue dress she wears when she gives birth to baby Joffrey. It gives off ethereal princess vibes 100%
    - And finally that black embroidered dress Rhaenyra wears in ep 7 (shown in vid too)
Btw lovely video as always Costume CO! 😌👌🏾

The Velaryon armor blew me away; I was already fond of the Sea Snake, but he was certainly well-dressed/well-armed while chopping up pirates - he looked gorgeous and convincing. Vaemond, bless his complaining, nasty heart, looked good, as did Laenor. The rest of the costumes were very nice and believable for a prosperous Westeros at the peak of Targaryen power. (when I think of the poor quality of the costumes in Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, which had a bigger budget, I just sigh and want to fire people)

For me, as in the original show, it's the embroidery (slash dragon scale smocking). It blows my mind the amount of storytelling that is expressed with such small details which most people will not even really see.

Toned down picture and lighting effects have added a feel of CGI fakeness to everything. Only in additional materials for the tv-series we could see for real how much effort and time was put into production…which is a pity.

I decided to leave this comment here because this video is an overview of the whole series and the first thing I wanted to say is thank you for producing another great series of videos looking at details of the costumes, fabrics, colours in the GoT shows - and, oh, the emboridery, the wonderful emboridery!!! I enjoy them so much and they help me with my own research too.
Overall, I agree with your (as always) well-observed critique about the fit of some of the costumes, and for me, at times, this was not only in terms of how they fit the actors/characters themselves but also whether they 'fit' in terms of the overall context and cultural; references of the narrative, as they always did so amazingly in GoT. However, as someone with their roots more in history than costume design, I think the female costumes actually may be better than you have given them credit for, at least in some respects. Whilst the history of the GoT series is loosely based on the 'Wars of the Roses' in England, with many other influences, this series is an homage to 'The Anarchy' that took place three centuries earlier. I would say that the dresses are more authentic if you look at them as being early-mid medieval rather than Tudor. I don't think you find many stays or rigid under garments under the dresses of Gauls Goths, Franks, Huns, Vandals, Celts and other and Germanic cultures (central and north-western Europe and the Iberian Peninsula) of the early medieval period, likewise the later Anglo-Saxon/Viking/Norman periods. But I'm happy to be corrected if I'm muddled on that.
Some of the really strong costumes, like the one with the headdress, cape and lots of gold, were clearly influenced by the stylistic traits under the umbrella of 'Byzantine' and, in turn, some of the groups listed above were heavily influenced by Byzantine art. But they also had their own cultural and stylistic signatures too - the jewellery with the sky blue droplet gems for example is very much like votive tiaras from the post-Roman period. To be honest, I can't understand why the costume team mentioned the Tudor influence because I think that by doing so, they do themselves a disservice and make the costumes seem ill-conceived when I don't think they are.
I'm so sorry for waffling on - I just find all these little details discussed in your videos so interesting and then I can't shut up. I' agree with you that saying "it's a fantasy show" isn't really good enough - after all, we probably only have such high expectations because of Michelle Clapton's artistry in GoT. On the other hand, and I'm sure you've heard this many times now, can we give them a bit of leeway regarding restrictive undergarments given that most of the women ride dragons? Indeed, whatever other restrictions the patriarchal social structure places on them, as dragon riding seems to be considered the norm for enobled males and females in this cultural context, maybe the stays and corsets arrived later. That the women wear them in GoT actually fits in with the timeline of the shows and that of the historical periods that influence GRRM.
Thank you again for your videos.

My tops are definitely similar to yours! Didn’t know that some of the jewelry was not bespoke, but I actually love that since it makes costuming a litter easier 😅
My favorites for this season are probably:
    1. Pink Dress - young Helaena
    2. Gold Formal Gown - Laena
    3. Black Council Scale Gown - Rhaenyra
    4. All of the Velaryon Armor
    5. Daemon’s Full Armor
I believe these all encapsulate the meaning of houses while exploring the personality of those characters. On that note, Alicents house signal dress from ep 5 is also up there although I wish it had had a shift or something added to make it….pop more 😅
I wish we had gotten to see Alicents wedding gown in full view (hopefully will get to on blu-Ray) as I didn’t pick up on the texture being the same as Viserys/ the unique Targaryen fabric made for the show. Some of this season has been great but I’m intrigued by what your next video will critique as I believe it’s warranted 😂

I was actually disappointed by HotD first seasons' costumes. I thought that the men were all consistently great but ladies were hit and miss. While all the dresses are beautiful some look out of place. I do love the faction and house allegiances being shown through the color, heraldry and all the gorgeous embroidery.
I just feel there was a lack of visual consistently in the styles worn.
In GoT we get a very consistent look for each place or culture. The gowns are kind of all over in style in HotD. The gown Aliceent wears to 'seduce' king Visarys was very beautiful; but, the very detailed seaming and geometric trace work on the bodice and sleeves look overly modern. Rhaenyra's first wedding dress also looks much to plain (jewelry is sorely missed here); and her hair is so under welleming with those few sprinkled rubies. A tiara is needed with that high pilled hair style; she's a princess and heir presumptive! The 'tiara' that's part of Aliceent's cut wedding gown would be more appropriate for Rhaenyra's wedding; while, Aliceent needed an actual crown to wear at court (perhaps a tower with a dragon coiled round lighting the fire atop?). In GoT S1 Cercei as queen consort has a tiara and Margery Tyrell has one as well. Surely during their hight of power the Targaryan queen consorts would as well.
I also HATED the strange cone head look of Rheanys' hair. The only time it worked was the beautiful style at queen Aemma's funeral. I also like the morning veil, which was reminicent of Olena Tyrell's veil, worn at Leana's funeral.
The Valaryon's generally looked good especially at Rhaenyra's wedding, but I really did expect more jewelry to show off their wealth. On the upside the styles for Leana, Beala and Rheana's hair are some of the stand out high lights.
I also think that adult Rhaenyra looks like she's wearing a house robe half the time; until she gets her final 'Black Queen' gown from episodes 8 and 10.

There is just a noticiable lack of audio quality whenever I click on one of your videos, almost takes me back to 2010 youtube. I say this because I really enjoy your breakdowns and wish for your videos to reach more people and your channel to get more popular.
